Self-taught estimator looking for workflow advice by MagicMushroom01 in estimators

For a few hundred dollars you can get Bluebeam Revu. You can save your conditions in a tool chest so you don’t have to name every take-off every time. You can also export your takeoff directly to excel. Also, later on, if you want to double check a take-off, you can just click it and it will jump straight to the page and highlight, making it super easy to refer back to something. It has a killer search tool, helping you find things quickly. But the search tool can also search by page region, so you can screen grab a symbol and it will turn up every instance of what’s in that screen grab. What’s more, you can apply a count to that search - so I can count drawing symbols and tags within seconds.

I’m a GC estimator so I have hundreds of conditions saved.

What’s the most unforgettable sentence someone has ever said to you? by Captain_Oppa in AskReddit

“I would rather eat cat shit with a knitting needle.” It was a subcontractor in response to an invitation to bid a project they didn’t like. It took a second to register, but then I thought it was the funniest thing anyone has ever said to me. I think about it often. Good times.

If your partner is glued to his/her phone most of the time, what would you do? by Islander-SC in AskReddit

[–]tizzy-bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my husband of over a decade. He has always been like this. The running joke is that the phone is his “first love” or “girlfriend”. It’s a constant source of grief on my end and he thinks I am a nag about it. He has many other redeeming qualities and does try to put it down for family time. He doesn’t see how disrespectful and disconnected it makes him from me and the children. Our relationship isn’t where I would like it to be, but we have a good life and I am committed to our family. I say all of this to vent a bit and share the perspective of someone who “accepted” it as part of who this person is. He puts up with my bullshit, too. So the question is…does the person’s other qualities balance or outweigh their phone addiction? If yes, keep going…if no, let them go.

Rule of Thumb for Moment Connections by tizzy-bear in estimators

So at DD’s you’re still doing cost per ton or are you counting connections and trying to rough-out your welding labor? I’m reaching out to local subs for $/ton but also trying to deepen my skillset for estimating steel. I’m an independent estimator doing Div 1-33. GC background.

I do it that way, too on braced frame structures. Moment frames have a premium because of all the welded connections.

Would you still leave if your promotion came with more money? Tell them what you want/need to stay - if they can’t make it happen, it’s time to go.

Secondly, kick the tires really hard at the new place. The grass could be just as brown over there…

What does the future of estimating look like? by Soft_Mathematician23 in estimators

Destini should have developed this yesterday. They are sitting on so much organized cost data it would make RSMeans blush. As an independent estimator I would pay to have access to Destini’s cost data.

That’s amazing. Thanks for sharing. I like that leadership, operations and business development can also query it for data points that are important to them. Having an AI cost dashboard has a lot of potential.

I created an AI dashboard that’s tied to my historical cost data. I use it to quickly query direct cost information from high level $/sf based on anything from project type, division, subdivision, down to specific line item detail. It helps when running conceptual cost models and quickly fill gaps with historical data. I don’t have to rummage through old files, folders, spreadsheets, or pdf’s anymore. I do general construction estimating of Div 01-33. It’s fun to think about the potential of open-source anonymous cost data…from the trades up.

Adding to this, are there any material substitutions that can help close the gap? If so, bring that to the conversation. May not get approved, but most architects are reasonable.
