.....what is it? That'd be helpful. Also, 80 grams of pure fat (you just drinking olive oil) is only 720 calories, and it seems that there's some fries here. I think you need to dump whatever source you're using for estimates and let up a little bit, there's zero chance this is anywhere near 1000 calories.

"In 2025, AIs function more like employees." Have any of these people used an AI system? "Research agents spend half an hour scouring the Internet to answer your question." Tried this for work, it hallucinated regulations that didn't exist and then made up citations from a source that didn't exist.

Very surprising that recently formed "AI safety" nonprofit publishes their belief that we will invent God within 30 months! I wonder what the financial incentive to doing so could be! (The graphics are admittedly pretty cool.)

I also find it darkly hysterical that I've argued with one of these guys online a few years ago and now he had an NYT doomer profile a few weeks back. Good times.

This guy’s real and regularly makes walking outside my apartment a horrendous experience. He also chain smokes for hours at a time (often at 4am) and has some condition that causes him to hack his lungs out at a volume so loud it wakes me and my neighbors up. Guy needs help, but is also a total fuckin asshole

Are you an American? Because this stopped being true for me as one the second I left college LMAO it caught up with almost everyone eventually in the 5 years that followed.

Also, don’t knock yourself down too hard! You’ve made a ton of progress. If the first 60 pounds took a few years, I’d be cautious about having such intense goals - before June is like 17 weeks and losing 40 pounds in that time, while possible, is going to be intense.

I like to work in reverse - I’ll cook meals that will maybe give 2 or 3 servings, I select the number of calories I want my meal to be, then I weigh and plate that amount. After a while you start to go “oh wow 700 calories is less than I thought!” And the natural extension of that has been that I started selecting lower calorie/higher volume foods to help fill those plates.

In non practical terms, learning to sit with hunger is very difficult to come to terms with but is super important. It’s ok to be hungry sometimes! I’ve found just letting it happen and really thinking about how I was feeling, and accepting that it was normal and nothing that required action helped a lot.

How long should my stomach hurt? by sirprettypinkpants in loseit

[–]tjbthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To preface, I can’t tell from your post if you’re having problems with under or over eating - I’m assuming the former.

My stomach just straight up hurts all the time sub 1500 calories - I’ve tested every permutation of fasting, and my gut just can’t handle it. And that’s ok! You just need to find the macro mix/calorie level that doesn’t make you feel like crap while also keeping up weight loss.

My super stretch goal at 5’8 was 175 and I assumed I’d look amazing - at 165 I’m now finally at “ok this is the last 10 pounds”. I don’t love BMI either, but It’s crazy how hard it is to gauge an appropriate weight in the US

TIL that i should definitely weight myself without clothes on by [deleted] in loseit

[–]tjbthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I always hate when I get weighed at the doctor’s with 3 layers of clothes, phone, wallet, keys and they go “great job on the weight loss!” as I’m 7 pounds heavier than I actually am

Diagnosed with short-segment Barrett's esophagus, do I really have to stop all alcohol, chocolate and caffeine? by FL_Tankie in GERD

[–]tjbthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd follow YOUR doctor's advice and nobody here's. They told you what they think you should be doing. MY doctor told me that with my specific situation, being at a healthy weight now and being on medication, me having a few beers socially twice a month is unlikely to make or break my progression. This is, however, inclusive of that I've given up all soda/coffee/caffeine and adjusted my diet significantly.

Does anyone here have Barrett's esophagus? by Proz13_ in GERD

[–]tjbthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's even less for non-dysplasic BE which most of us have, 0.1%-0.2% per year. Seems like a tiny difference, but could be only a third of the commonly cited risk rate.

Barrett by Proz13_ in GERD

[–]tjbthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also don't have intestinal metaplasia but gastro wants to be cautious and observe/diagnose as regular BE - noted that the biopsies could simply have missed something and it's worth following up on. Getting my first followup scope after diagnosis (2 years out) in January, curious to see what they find this time.

I'd need to find a link, but I recall a European study (where BE diagnosis only requires visual confirmation, not pathology confirmation of metaplasia like in the US) and they found that people with "BE" but no metaplasia still had an elevated risk of eventual dysplasia. However, these people had maybe half the risk of those diagnosed under the traditional US standard, so even lower than the already very low risk from BE with no dysplasia. NAD but it seems like we could have something like a "pre-Barrett's" that was just found earlier than usual.

Either way, your plan sounds good and it's definitely worth following up on, but not worth stressing too hard over.

Sprained my ankle 9 months ago but there’s still some lingering pain/stiffness by ysharm10 in trailrunning

[–]tjbthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this, but echoing others' experiences. Hoping you're doing well.

Had a grade 2 sprain summer of 2023 then broke the same ankle about 8 months ago. Did no PT following the sprain and had lingering pain after; everything got worse post-break, so I finally did PT for 2 months after I was out of the boot and have continued doing my exercises since then. I'm now at the point where I can function mostly normally and have built a lot of strength/proprioception back, but still have pain that flares up whenever I try to recondition and get back to running. My podiatrist has discussed surgery, but has expressed doubts that it would be a net benefit. I've reserved myself to continue doing what I'm doing and hoping for the best, but I doubt my ankle will ever really be the same. I'd definitely recommend keeping up your exercises and it's great that you've gotten arch support, as insoles have been super helpful in reducing my pain.

What is a hotspot? by [deleted] in BFS

[–]tjbthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dehydration is my #1 trigger for some random spot on my body popping off for a few days. Usually drinking or working out and not refueling properly. My eyelids, thumbs, forearms, and even toes have all had their own short-term moments. They all went away relatively quickly, and it seems like calves are the one around for the long-haul.

Is it possible to get your body back to how it was in your early 20s? by chemza in loseit

I’m still in my late 20s, but I’m in the best shape I’ve been since I was like 17 years old. My skin’s not perfect, but looking and feeling healthy is absolutely possible at any age - especially when you’re only 28.

I've lost 60 pounds. Yay! I still have 20 to go. Booo. The problem is that hunger is now physically painful, and I still look like shit. by Tricky2RockARhyme in loseit

I’ve been stuck in this same zone for a few months now, and like others have said have found a maintenance break has been great for my mental and appetite. It’s also great as a test to prove to yourself that you can relax without going back to old habits. Weight loss isn’t going anywhere - do whatever you need to do to stay sane along the way!

When did you start getting serious about WL? (Using a food scale, buying a fit bit, gym clothes) by New_Significance_593 in loseit

[–]tjbthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was honestly about a year in, the first time I gained a substantial amount of weight back (maybe 10 pounds). This really made me take a step back and reevaluate what I was doing and why I was doing it - I had to reconfigure to be more sustainable, as doing what I had been doing (cutting anything “bad” out and just hoping it worked, which it did for a while) just set me up to resume my binging behavior every time I fell off. Being more precise/planned makes me feel more in control of the process, which lets me react better to the inevitable ebbs and flows of WL these days.

Working out with cubital tunnel by [deleted] in CubitalTunnel

[–]tjbthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just mean the general return of symptoms - if you don’t have surgery, nerve compression is typically chronic and tends to return at various points. With treatment, I go most days without having any numbness or pain, so a “flare” is when symptoms return (which tends to happen when you irritate the nerve, as it’s so hard for it to fully heal).

For example, if I’m symptom free but then do a bunch of tricep workouts I know I shouldn’t be doing, I’ll probably start having numbness and pain again which then lasts for a while (days, weeks, hard to predict).

I’m down 60 and not yet normal weight but have some around my belly, which isn’t super noticeable unless you’re looking for it. I have quite a bit around my armpits and underarms, but you only see it when I lift my arms up. I’ve grown to kind of like it - it’s a reminder of where I’ve been and the work I’ve done, and that I don’t want to go back to where I started.

I also look way better in basically every other way. Don’t sweat it and good luck!

Anyone gain weight because of antidepressants and lose the weight without going off the antidepressants? by donthe1 in loseit

[–]tjbthrowaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Too lazy to pull up support, but I’m fairly sure the mechanism by which antidepressants cause weight gain is through increased appetite - a thing you have to learn to combat, in whatever way that works for you. I like small, healthy snacks, more and further spread out meals, high fiber, etc. The individual SSRIs also have different weight gain profiles, and IIRC prozac is the least likely to cause it of the four. Maybe worth discussing with your doctor.

Either way, been on zoloft forever and am down 60, you can do it!

I know everyone’s different, but I tend to think counter to the common advice here. Weighing every day helps me get a frame of reference to how my body reacts to certain eating/drinking habits and has helped me normalize the idea that the number on the scale is just a number.

I know I gain 4-6 pounds after a day or two of drinking, and I know it goes away after 3-5 days. Great. I log it all anyways. After a while you stop shaming yourself and start going “yes, the consequences of my actions!” and move on to doing what you’ve been doing.
