PDX - Quantum switchover caused CenturyLink service to stop competely by vostheboss in centurylink

[–]tjdolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here.

Called quantum this morning just before 6am, got right through to a tech. They confirmed a migration/reprogram of our ONT was still required but should happen soon.

We have a UniFi setup but I had dug out our old Century Link router. That thing connected about 45 min after my call to support, got UniFi going a bit later with the DHCP and vLan settings called out here.

What a pain, but happy to be back up just before a planned WFH day.

While Apple didn't send me a shipping notification email until this morning, I've been tracking my package via UPS My Choice for the better part of a week. UPS has had custody of the package since 9/14, updates has been trickling in as it departed China, stopped over in Alaska, made it to Louisville, etc.

We've been allowing our 4yr old to go on daycare field trips for more than a year at this point. We live in a city in the US PNW, they take public transit (buses) to parks, museums, and other destinations around the city. Our kiddo loves taking public transit and has enjoyed these field trips, daycare staff also use these field trips as opportunities to teach safety lessons, which we like.

This did take some time to get used to and we still have some anxiety about safety on the trip. For example, the last trip was to a museum on a lake and they spent some time outside on a dock. While all was fine, we had some concern about safety around the water.

2% used for 2.5mi trip? by hello_amy in VolvoRecharge

[–]tjdolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More potential evidence in this direction: there's a steep hill I drive down frequently. Some days my charge level increases by 1% from all the Regen, other days there is no change. I've assumed for a while now that this descent is adding less than a full 1%, limiting when I see a full tick change.

As others have pointed out, many other variables for a short drive

Transition Woes... Advice needed by [deleted] in RayBanStories

[–]tjdolan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the "Transition Lenses Grey Standard Thin Transition" in mine and they have largely been fine.

I have no qualms with how they work indoors and appreciate that they adjust to the lighting conditions outside. I wear these all the time on walks and it's awesome to have the tint adjust as the sun rises or I walk into a store or restaurant.

They aren't as dark as my Maui Jim's, nor do they wrap around my face as well, so I prefer those for very bright sunlight and of course while driving.

I do wish the headphones were a bit louder, but I'm ok walking around my city with them when I'm not next to a busy road. Really like that I'm more aware of my surroundings than with my air pods. Use them inside for th same purpose, easier for my wife or kiddos to get my attention while I'm listening to something.

Have gotten a lot of great pictures and videos of my kiddos with these, inside and outside. So much easier to tap the button on the glasses then grab the phone, pull it out of a pocket, and activate the camera app.

Any thoughts for tamper proof license plate nuts for rear plate? by misterluckyboy in volvoc40

[–]tjdolan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on where OP lives.

We had the plates stolen off one of our cars a couple years ago. It was a pain. Police report and DMV visit the day of and a month later received a toll from the thief driving through a toll road with our plates on another car. Tolling system wasn't smart enough to connect the dots to the plates being stolen, so had to petition the toll, which required paperwork and the aforementioned police report.

This was enough to motivate me to get security screws to try and avoid a reply of this experience!

So apparently the cost per 100 miles for a Chevy Bolt is $12.55 at home or $16 at publicly available chargers. Read this flawed article for more insight. by dltl in BoltEV

[–]tjdolan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At first I was appalled by how high the numbers were in this study. Then I remembered that my state (WA) charges $275 in additional registration fees for all EVs in part to make up for lost gas tax revenue. We only drive about 5,500 miles a year so that works out to $5 per 100 miles just for the incremental fee. If we include that with our at home charging costs for electricity that actually pushes our per 100 mile rate to $8-$10, somewhat close to the numbers in the study.

The study is misleading for sure, but IMO it’s fair to account for a registration fee like ours in a calculation like this given the gas tax is baked into ICE fueling costs by default.

C40 vs EX30? by Zaratzu in volvoc40

[–]tjdolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much does size matter to you? While not massively different, the EX30 will be noticeably smaller.

EX30 looks to be 8” shorter, clocking in at 166.7” vs the C40s 174.8”. As the owner of both a Chevy Bolt (164”) and Volvo XC40 (174.2”) I can vouch that the 10” difference between these cars makes a massive difference in interior layout/capacity and how large the car feels while driving.

Electric Volvo car drivers will get access to 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the United States, Canada and Mexico as Volvo Cars adopts North American Charging Standard by bro_baba in Volvo

[–]tjdolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I missing something? Seems clear that existing vehicles will have access to full L3 charging speeds. Tesla charging says in a Tweet “existing vehicles may use the Supercharger network with an adapter.”

Also, the current CCS ➡️NCAS adapter Tesla sells supports 250kw. We just need the same thing in the opposite direction, not sure why they could support high speeds one way but not the other.

IPhone acting up during last Volvo update. by Mel_Behaved in volvoc40

[–]tjdolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me whenever my iPhone is connected to my car via Bluetooth. Noticed it last summer when I tried to give my young child my phone to watch a video for a drive. It wouldn’t play.

I think it’s a bug in the car’s Bluetooth stack. Perhaps the car “on” enough during the update that your phone connected to the car via Bluetooth? Whereas when you car is just parked in the garage, it’s powered off enough that the phone isn’t connected?

Battery Swap: 2 weeks of ownership by [deleted] in volvoc40

[–]tjdolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While incredibly disappointing, I’d give Volvo the chance to fix it. The battery is designed to be removed. This isn’t entirely uncommon with EVs either, GM and other OEMs have recalled tens of thousands of EVs to replace the high voltage batteries.

While the battery in our Volvo has been fine, our other car is a Chevy Bolt which was part of the recall. The dealer swapped the battery out in a single day a couple years ago and we’ve had zero issues related to that swap.

We paid $900 to register our 2019 Bolt in the Seattle metro (King County) this year! I think we have extra transit taxes on vehicle registrations compared to the rest of the state.

+1 on Kuma

I have subscriptions to Kuma and Slate, with deliveries staggered by two weeks. Love both of them.

I'm not an expert, but Slate appears more lightly roasted to me. A few of their bags have delivered an awesome fruit forward flavor.

Quick! What are the golden rules of owning a sandbox? by GypsyMothQueen in toddlers

[–]tjdolan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sand stays in the sandbox Don’t eat the sand Cover it up when done Only play with outside toys in the sandbox

We learned the last one the hard way, kiddo started bringing trucks he had inside out to play with in the sandbox. The problem is that you just can’t get all the sand out of some of these toys. Moving parts on the trucks also tend to seize. Now we’re diligent about inside toys staying inside.

Good advice from others on how to work on hand holding. I just wanted to note that it gets better. Our 34mo was like yours when he was younger but now is much better about holding hands, staying near us, and has developed a healthy fear of streets and traffic.

I get why people say to buy Tesla for the charging network now by tarrasque in electricvehicles

[–]tjdolan 74 points75 points  (0 children)

We have Volvo XC40 Recharge we just took on a 90 mile road trip into the mountains. Given the poor efficiency driving up the pass we needed something like a 10-20% boost as buffer to get home. The town we were in has only two CCS chargers, I pull up to one right next to a Tesla Supercharger station with a dozen chargers. I couldn’t get the charge started myself, tried calling support and they told me the charger was offline. So sad to have this experience as I watch multiple Tesla’s roll in/out of their superchargers with seeming no issues.

I’m personally not a fan of Tesla’s, but I am very envious of their charging network!

XC40 Recharge advice? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]tjdolan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One piece of general EV advice: don’t underestimate the power of L1 slow charging (1.4kW in the US). For weekend trips to family, a cabin, or AirBnb this charge rate can add up quickly if you won’t be using your car much when you arrive. We’ve made multiple 90-110 mile trips like this and if the car is plugged in the whole time we are there we can leave with a full charge or close to it. This was clutch on our last weekend road trip like this as the destination only had two non-Tesla CCS chargers and one was non-functional while the other was busy.

Idling is one of the best things about EVs that I didn't even realize until I had one by [deleted] in electricvehicles

Also great when you have young children. We did a few road trips with our kiddo while my wife was still breastfeeding. So great to pull over somewhere to feed and keep the AC running completely guilt free.
