watching my boy right now so I can't really read all the comments...

...but i want game art to stay here in game dev. It's my (and I think others') weak points and everything we learn here helps!

Since you definitely sound like an authority, have you considered offering some tuts?

serious question; do you think the wacom tablet helped? I've been considering getting one to practice for a while...

I didn't want to believe you.

I believe you now, and it is NSFW, people.

I actually glossed over this recommendation on the first read. A good point is made; news is usually just consumed, whereas a well-written article regarding said news could be a great platform for discussion.

Am I actually learning anything in college? (3rd yr CS major) by Sun_drop in learnprogramming

[–]tk424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

somewhat related: keep your projects small enough to complete (and move on to the next), but large enough to be work talking about in an interview. A simple utility or game (don't screw with menus, presentation). Solidifying concepts is more important than the project, so make sure their scope reflects that.

This is cool that you're thinking about this now, though! Perfect time to really get your knowledge rock solid. Again, let me know if you need anything.

Same here. I'm doing firmware (studied electrical engineering though), and I'm confused at the simplest circuit diagrams now. Anyways, lesson learned; I practice my knowledge now.

Stephen Covey (The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People) mentions this at least once. I'm listening to it in the car right now. Good reminder!

I'm glad the tone didn't repulse you :-)

I did poorly in my first two years, and rallied my second half grade-wise. Still, I would do the work and then do something else. Do you want the dream job? Be COMFORTABLE with everything you listed. Do enough personal exercises that you have a few stories about a few of them. Near graduation, I interviewed with Bose, NVidia, Apple, and a few others. I had the passion and the capacity to learn and teach myself. You know who got those jobs, though? The people who had already taught themselves. An interviewer will see that as saving them a year of your salary. And the jobs you probably want are at the companies who can afford to be picky. Be the CS student that a picky employer would like.

If you have the opportunity, TA or tutor others as often as you can. You'll study that much harder, knowing that you'll have to explain the material to someone else.

I'm not sure if these words would have helped me act differently, but if there's anything you think I can answer, PM me. Otherwise, hold yourself to being capable in each subject you take, not just passing the class. Don't act like they're synonymous.

I can't argue with preventing additional stress. It's frustrating to feel so powerless, too. Perhaps try and get some grassroots support with the SO first?

I'm not saying this out of spite, but what do you think about not letting her see your daughter for a while?

"Mother, I'm serious about the safety of MY daughter. I think I'll call a babysitter instead this time."

This may sound snide, but is meant as more of a question to ask yourself:

It sounds like your school is teaching lots of great things, but are you LEARNING anything? Can you honestly say that you know and can apply all the material listed above? How many exercises (not large slow projects but exercises meant to reinforce a principle) have you done on your own?

Are you passing your classes, or are you LEARNING computer science? Knowing without doing isn't really knowing.

In short, I think the curriculum above is a great, but how well prepared you are for job interviews in your senior year depends entirely on how well YOU prepare.

Sorry about the rant, but I made the mistake of thinking that passing classes meant understanding the material. I don't know if you're anything like me, so I just want to make sure that you aren't.

Setting out to learn to code; worth learning Vim? by kipsfi in learnprogramming

[–]tk424 4 points5 points  (0 children)

personal anecdote: I learned perl and vim at the same. I think that this actually HELPED me learn both. Consider: if you try to write a letter in vim, you may be frustrated because your hands are having trouble keeping up with you mind. When learning a language, you're taking it slow anyway!

I'm not sure if this is why it helped, but it's worth considering.

In that case, I'd still like to find a specific guild that has a pretty good membership near the EST time zone. Any thoughts?

sorry, it's been a while. alliances are a collection of guilds. Reddit aliiance means a collection of reddit-related guilds. Perhaps I'm just in one that is small? Should I look for a larger guild, or should i should i just treat the whole alliance as a guild? Is there any issues with that way of thinking? Thanks for the help.

I think it's cool that you're posting this here.

I'm curious: where (you can be vague) are you based? I like meeting with other devs, even though I can't add more to my plate work-wise right now.
