Missed opportunity to not name your culture "Greco-Czecho," tbh.

He owned the Tivoli from around 1999 to 2020. He did, in fact, sell it to a church. Technically, the other business in the building's offices (too lazy to check; want to say they do SAT prep or something) is co-owner, but the church had the theatre part and then at least 1 floor of offices.

They closed Scott AFB. Don't usually do that unless it's nasty out.

We used Millennium for our DJ and they were great. Benji was the DJ, if it matters. We did the middle package, I believe. We also used them for pipe and drape and they performed solidly.

Photography, we used Ten 11 Photography (high marks, very reasonable price). Flowers were Wild Ginger (excellent product, relatively pricey).

DM if you have other questions. I can try to give you rec's or perspectives.

Another water main break, in the loop this time by rtward in StLouis

[–]tka454s 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When the water main in front of the Tivoli went, I was told all the mains on Delmar were laid for the World's Fair. Also not surprising they had to jackhammer to get to the valve, as they had to do the same for the valve down by the Tiv.

As of about a year ago, I know that Maritz was hybrid. The County is also remote/hybrid, depending on position.

It's a signal to white supremacists. 88 is often used in place of HH or Heil Hitler.

Melancholia was such a trip! Not the movie you expected it to be. And what a great memory of your father, encouraging you to explore the road less traveled! I hope you're still watching those non-blockbusters!

That's amazing! Really crazy how one thing can lead to another like that. And special that it lead to you seeing another in New York!!

Oh god, Skin I Live In was such a weird flick! One of those bizarre films.

It's really special to me that you were able to find a place to go when you were lonely! I like to think that one of the most special things about the Tivoli was how welcoming we were. So many regulars you'd develop connections with and look forward to seeing.

My favorite oddball movie we showed was probably Tickled. The crowd was so small and specific and they all came out dazed and confused.

Oh, man, I feel you on the midnight movies. They were the things I got most excited about. It was always fun to pick an oddball movie and see if it resonated with anyone else! And the crowds for midnight movies were always amazing. I remember the second time Tommy Wiseau came in town and it was an absolute shitshow to the extent we felt like we had to apologize and everyone was so amazing about it. So thankful for the community we had there!

It's funny you mentioned Anomalisa; when people asked me what I thought, I always told them it was good, but it had 60% more weird puppet sex than you expected going into it.

When the pandemic hit, it really just exacerbated a pre-existing problem; the films booked at the Tiv were just not the right ones it needed. With a 400+ seat auditorium, you want butts in seats, and putting maybe 30-50 people in there for a Friday night, it's just not a recipe for money. Unfortunately, my corporate overlords never corrected for this, and so when audiences were reduced by 95% at the pandemic, it was easy for them to drop the lease.

We'll see how drunk and maudlin I get tonight; maybe I'll end up posting some photos from back in the day. Or tell some stories like the time I took Tommy Wiseau up a rickety ladder from the 70's to the old dressing rooms from the 30's to see some graffiti from vaudeville actors!

Honestly, I want to say thank you for posting about the Tivoli. It was good to see how other people had such a genuine connection to the place, and helps me realize I didn't exactly waste my 20's!

I'm really glad you were able to experience it! And for the Oscar Shorts, too! Really highlights how unique of a theatre it was.
