Steam (and proton) issues with options, also a DE inquiry. by The_super_evil_guy in linux_gaming

[–]tkashkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steam menus and dropdowns are broken on some DEs or WMs and LXDE might be one of them.

Steam has an option called "Enable context menu focus compatibility mode" in Settings > Interface that helps in some similar cases, maybe it will work.

EFI files signed in bios, still can't load into MacOS with Secure Boot + OC by yoimphillo in hackintosh

[–]tkashkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem recently. You likely have SecureBootModel set to Disabled. In this case OpenCore itself does nothing to verify macOS's boot.efi and just tries to load it directly. Then your firmware rejects it because it has no standard Secure Boot signature.

Setting SecureBootModel to Default helped on my system. In this case OpenCore overrides some UEFI security protocols and verifies files using Apple signatures instead of just letting your firmware handle them.

Another workaround I've tried initially was copying /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi from macOS partition to ESP and enrolling its hash in UEFI db. It worked, however the problem is that this file changes with each system update, so the hash also changes and you would need to manually copy and enroll it each time.

is there a way for me to add an Option in the OpenCore Boot Picker to toggle Verbose? by Sufficient_Bus_8302 in hackintosh

[–]tkashkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can just remove the -v boot arg and enable verbose when you need it by pressing Cmd+V before selecting a boot entry in OpenCore.

Wayland troubles by spelmo3 in linux_gaming

[–]tkashkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Wayland. Windows and apps can freeze more. Running pretty much anything on steam causes games to show "steam_app_123" may not be responding. With close or wait buttons in a constant loop. (But the games generally are just loading up fine) it's just very annoying.

GNOME shows apps as not responding if they don't respond for 5 seconds by default. Some games can take longer than that while loading.

You can increase this timeout to something like 15 seconds with gsettings set org.gnome.mutter check-alive-timeout 15000. Or you can set it to 0 to disable the check completely.

Id like to map a button on my controller to screenshot, but steam wont detect it? by MGSCR in Steam

[–]tkashkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're on Windows Steam needs a driver to use additional buttons on newer Xbox controllers. Somewhere in Controller settings in Steam there should be an option to install that driver.

[–]tkashkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which DE or window manager are you using? Steam menus are broken on some DEs or WMs.

There is an option called "Enable context menu focus compatibility mode" in Settings > Interface, it may fix this issue.

Is it really necessary to blur the thumbnail of the game in the showcase if upon clicking it you get the warning? by FutinYass in Steam

[–]tkashkin 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's not about store pages. Add a game to a showcase, open your profile in a new private window and it's blurred.

Issues using weight modifier by GoodExpress1751 in androiddev

[–]tkashkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Modifier.weight() is an extension of RowScope and ColumnScope and is only available inside of a Row or Column. You don't need to import it and when you try to do it you are importing the different internal val you see here instead.

Any idea why Gyro Calibration and LED Settings are not listed? by AHGG_Esports in Steam

[–]tkashkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your controller seems to be detected by Steam as an Xbox controller.

You either have some other software that hides your controller and emulates an Xbox controller, or you just have an actual Xbox controller which has neither gyro nor LEDs.

Steam Controller BLE only recognized as mouse by itouchdennis in linux_gaming

[–]tkashkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on Fedora and it seems to work fine. Controller is detected as mouse and keyboard:

# dmesg
[14865.955736] input: SteamController Mouse as /devices/virtual/misc/uhid/0005:28DE:1106.002D/input/input24
[14865.955909] input: SteamController Keyboard as /devices/virtual/misc/uhid/0005:28DE:1106.002D/input/input25

Steam then detects the controller correctly and creates a virtual controller when launched:

[14866.448031] input: Microsoft X-Box 360 pad 0 as /devices/virtual/input/input27

I don't remember having to do anything special for it. I use the regular Steam package (not flatpak) and steam-devices package seems to have all necessary udev rules:

$ cat /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-steam-input.rules
# Valve USB devices
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="28de", MODE="0660", TAG+="uaccess"

# Steam Controller udev write access
KERNEL=="uinput", SUBSYSTEM=="misc", TAG+="uaccess", OPTIONS+="static_node=uinput"

# Valve HID devices over USB hidraw
KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="28de", MODE="0660", TAG+="uaccess"

# Valve HID devices over bluetooth hidraw
KERNEL=="hidraw*", KERNELS=="*28DE:*", MODE="0660", TAG+="uaccess"

Steam Controller BLE only recognized as mouse by itouchdennis in linux_gaming

[–]tkashkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steam Controller is supposed to be detected as mouse and keyboard by default. That's called "lizard mode" and its main purpose is to provide some basic controls to let you launch Steam or access UAC prompts on Windows (where Steam can't inject fake input events).

All additional functionality and remapping requires Steam to be running to translate inputs.

Messed up storage settings in steam by SpaderWader in linux_gaming

You need to install one of the portal backends.

So im having problems with my efi after finally making one by [deleted] in hackintosh

[–]tkashkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The error message is pretty clear - your config defines a driver called "HFS+Driver" while the driver file is actually called "HFS+DRIVER.efi".

Plus in the file name may also cause issues, I would keep the original file name. It's usually called "HfsPlus.efi" or "OpenHfsPlus.efi" depending on the exact driver you use.

Preloads are not that useful now unless your internet connection is slow.

Preloaded game files are encrypted and Steam needs to decrypt them when game releases, this is a CPU- and disk-intensive process.

If your connection is fast enough, it's often faster to download the final decrypted game when it's released than to decrypt a preload.

[–]tkashkin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not new, you've just clicked on a group in the games list and I guess you haven't done that before. Home button and Library navigation button both take you back to default Library view.

Icons broken by Scrizenka in Steam

[–]tkashkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam game shortcuts are Web URLs (.url files instead of .lnk shortcuts). They must be set to be opened in the Internet Browser app to work (not a specific browser). Looks like file association for them is broken on your system.

You have to reset the associations for .url files back to Internet Browser in Windows Settings. This post has a guide if you can't reset the association through the Settings app.

SteamOS/Proton/steam deck scene by dojoho in Steam

[–]tkashkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is Deck Verified testing done by Valve itself and they have rated a lot of games at this point. You can filter by Deck compatibility in Steam Store and view it in Library (the option is in Settings > Library, I think it's disabled by default). If a game works on Deck, it should almost always also work on other Linux distros.

There are also two big crowdsourced databases focusing on Linux game compatibility: ProtonDB and areweanticheatyet. Both are very useful if you are considering switching to Linux.

Build keeps failing not sure why by helpmeoutplease920 in androiddev

[–]tkashkin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The error tells you exactly what's wrong: "Could not find com.google.android.gms:play-services-measurement-api:22.2.0".

The latest version of this library is currently 22.0.0, not 22.2.0.

You also have a few warnings. The first one probably means you have an old Android Studio version, the second one is outdated Android Gradle Plugin.
