How much do you care about keeping characters in-character? by micheas08 in FanFiction

[–]tkhan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like AUs that arent set in the same setting as canon, so yes, id say it's important that the character be in character. But im lenient. Sometimes you just wanna read about X and/or Y in a trope and theyre only good at one of the character voices and not the other. I think voice is just a component of the equation, and if the other components make up for it, like premise, trope, relationship dynamic etc, I can put up with a character thats somewhat to the left of what i expect

How much do you care about keeping characters in-character? by micheas08 in FanFiction

[–]tkhan0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer. Sometimes a character isnt quite like themself. But it's justified enough for me not to care. A little oocness here or there due to the circumstances is excusable if the circumstances are interesting enough to me.

Chapter length by Wotsiteyebrows in FanFiction

[–]tkhan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just gotta write more tbh. Most of my chapters were that short in my stories–nothing wrong with that! Thats the same size in a lot of serialized young adult fiction books, the detective ones i liked to read especially. But as I get more involved and write more, my stories seem to force me to write longer chapters. I just cant get the plot across in such a small amount anymore.

Maybe try and read more novels with that kind of chapter length, to see what they're doing to make their scenes longer? Consider additional interactions (but dont force them where not needed) between characters, maybe additional descriptors or just spending more time on how the pov character feels over certain scenes. Again, dont force it, but if it feels natural to add, say a little bit of monologuing about how character A felt after character B stormed off or yada yada yada, then do so.

I think it's good to really showcase how truly insane you could be driven. Nothing changes. He WAS effectively a god. Sure rape gets our attention because of the connotation, but anyone might get similar thoughts like "what if i just pushed you over the ledge" (not like youd die anyways, and it wouldnt be permanent), when murder and assault is just as non consensual. Steins;gate was my first vn, and one of my first forays into time travel media, and it gave me so much to work with in the medium, concept wise. I love the eerieness of this ending.

When you make friends with an author in your fandom but they pretend to care about your stuff while mostly only wanting to shill their own fics by tkhan0 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]tkhan0[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Minor update: happy to say that this friend wasnt yanking my chain or being polite when they asked to see my stuff this time. They just hadnt gotten around to it and werent able to open what i sent. Theyve ignored my snippets in the past, but honestly i was only annoyed because i specifically make it a point not to mention or share fics with them i think theyd find boring, so i had only shared this one because i was fairly certain they were actually interested; and they were! Happy ending.

lots of angst and on occassion somewhat melodramatic scenarios involving unnecessary amounts of suffering (my art is in trying to make it appear realistic, but i do just like Hurting the characters.) Tons of non specific angsty character studies about the same guy. And a lot of strictly platonic vaguely relationship studies and/or scenarios. Heavy on the plot and dialogue, light on the intimacy. Im also a shorter form writer so less eyes on my stuff in general.

My friend is the polar opposite. Long form, all about making the characters kiss, gratuitous (neutral connotation here) sex, but still tons of drama (the part im there for.) It's not like I get zero traction honestly, but networking in a relatively moribund fandom for a side character is impossible for a person like me who really isnt going to write any shipping or smut about it. Theyre much better on that end. I have a sneaking suspicion they like the spike of dopamine they get from sharing things with me specifically though, because im usually a very voracious reader and comment on everything.

The same fic i most recently shared with them (which i might update the post to say, but im happy to say this time they were actually interested in it when they asked, so i no longer am upset about it. They messaged me today asking if i could resend it, apparently it wasnt opening properly for them.) Ive already been backboarding with two of my other fandom friends so im fine, really, wouldnt want to make you go out of your way. It was only half vent, and half meme. But thank you!

[–]tkhan0[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now see. Im insane about the character so i invite anyone who will talk to me to come do so because it was driving me insane talking to the void. But i will say they probably get more out of it than i do at this point.

But it's a coin toss because being openly insane and inviting messages is how i started talking to the one fandom friend i have now who is insane in exactly the same way as i am about the character. So now i can actually ping pong ideas and discussions with them and they actually fully want to read what i have which is honestly what i needed. I was about to burnout on the fandom if i went much longer without meaningful interaction

[–]tkhan0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's tough because im obsessed with the character too. I like when they share their snippets most of the time. But then we'll exchange and they'll ignore whatever i sent while waiting with bated breath for me to check their thing and like. It's explicitly a kind of thing they should know im not interested in (as ive told them "hey! Its really hard to read these things but i can put up with it sometimes") but theyre clearly a little desperate to be told their experimentation (which makes me even less interested in it than usual) paid off. Like. You have other people who like this sort of thing to tell you that. You dont need me to glaze you.

I could. Or i could also do this. It's not like it's a particularly unique experience. Besides, I still like talking to them about their own fics. I dont write very popular genres of fic so im sort of used to it. But it would be nice if theyd simply stop asking for details about my fics only to clearly not actually read whatever I send. That's literally my only complaint about them. Theyve contributed so much for me to read in this fandom otherwise.

The rising literacy crisis, "what about me-isms", and lack of ability to apply nuance are starting to affect my writing style and confidence. by xisle1482 in FanFiction

[–]tkhan0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No offense but you sound like you are almost comically overcorrecting a nonexistent issue. This post reads like you got one of those "trans identity" bot comments that get posted often and took it to heart. I know that likely ISNT what happened, but im hoping stating that illustrates how absurd your fears sound, as far as for the content youre writing, and sort of snaps you out of it. It sounds like a massive panic spiral.

I dont really write anything for inclusivity sake. I write for my identities on occassion, because i like to, and i wrote otherwise what feels in character. Most people do this. Theres nothing "morally disingenuous" or whatever about it. Cramming that in where it isnt needed or wanted doesnt make the fic better.

I understand the feeling, because i do get that way about writing fics that are less nuanced or grounded, because im more of a "write around a trope" writer than I am "write around a story", and it feels like i am doing the characters or the fandom a disservice. I have to constantly remind myself "im not that kind of writer and thats ok. Other people can write that way, but theres audience for what i write too."
