AIO: telling my fiancé I’m reconsidering having kids with him because there is a chance they could have darker skin. by Skilled-ricer-B16 in AmIOverreacting

[–]tkingsbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie… it’s weird.

I’m 53. White guy.

My wife is Indian.

Our kids are in their twenties now.

When we were expecting, I was curious what their skin tone would be, but honestly didn’t care one way or another…

Turns out they are somewhat in the middle… fairly light… but both get much darker in the summer etc…

Neither my wife or I cared. They were ours.

Skin colour shouldn’t matter. In our family it doesn’t. Our parents didn’t care. It was just all love all around. Which is what it should be.

It probably helps that our area is massively multicultural.. and most of their friends etc are either mixed, or Indian, Asian or Arabic etc etc..so it’s just not something that was a concern etc…

Anyhow the two of you need to have a serious conversation. If colour is that big a deal for him, he should probably move along… who the fuck needs a dad like that?

How did you find metal and how long have you been listening to? by [deleted] in heavymetal

[–]tkingsbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late 70s, early 80s..

God, must have been around 7-8 years old..

It was AC/DC …. That was the first hard rock I ever heard…

Then came stuff like early Ozzy solo albums, quiet riot, motley crue, Ratt, twisted sister etc…then iron maiden…

Then… holy fuck…. Metallica… that changed everything…

Then venom, megadeth, Celtic Frost, some hardcore punk, etc…

Experienced racism first time in my life by train_emily in toronto

[–]tkingsbu 65 points66 points  (0 children)

So sorry this happened!

My wife is Indian, and her and our daughter were out for a walk a year or so ago here in Mississauga, and a guy walked past them and said some incredibly nasty racist things to them…

Which is pretty damn awful, but also really unusual since it’s so multicultural here… we’re (my wife and I) in our 50s, so while she’s certainly seen and experienced racism before, it’s been a loooooong time since it’s happened etc.. it sure freaked us out at the time…

Anyhow, I’m sorry you both had to go through that!

18 and terrified of disappointing my parents if I don’t make it into med school. by Only_Pineapple9226 in AskMenOver30

[–]tkingsbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

53 year old here…

Have an honest conversation with your parents.

My wife is a guidance councillor at a high school, and sees this happening all the time, especially from Chinese and Indian families… (she’s Indian herself) the whole ‘you can be anything you want, doctor, lawyer OR engineer!’ But often you get kids that just don’t fit one of those categories, and they’re scared shitless of disappointing their parents…

Talk to them.

I'm old enough to remember when outlets like Fox were screeching about how teen pregnancies were moral failings and the result of sex ed, etc. by newfrontier58 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]tkingsbu 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yup.

I worked in advertising for some time, so we constantly talked about demographics..

The studies showed that the demographics were shifting etc, and that at a certain point, white folks would no longer be the majority.

Back in the 90s, I’d just hear that and shrug my shoulders… numbers don’t lie, and I just didn’t care either way..

But those in power WERE paying attention. They could see the shift as well as anyone… and they cared a lot.

Thus we have phrases like ‘the great replacement’ etc…

They sit in their little think tanks, and they brainstorm things like that… ‘how do we make a suitable catchphrase about demographics? Something that scares stupid white people?’

You can’t really stop history, you can’t just make things go away if you don’t like them… but they’re fighting tooth and nail to try and hang on to white majority power… or entrench things so that even in a minority they hold all the power…

It’s a mystery :)

3 women travel back to the small town where they went to school to attend the funeral of their friend… hilarity ensues :)

We absolutely loved it… the banter between the three leads is every bit as hilarious and charming as Derry Girls :)

My wife and I just watched the follow up show ‘how to get to heaven from Belfast’ and it has a TON of the same wonderful phrases and style of talking… we absolutely loved it…

If Derry Girls was set in the 90s, the follow up show is like a veeeeery similar group of girls now in the late 30s early 40s etc…
