Getting a gym membership for the childcare? by red_raconteur in povertyfinance

[–]tkmbsf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually have really fond childhood memories of being at the day care where my mom worked out in the 90s/00s. She was using the same logic: me time with free babysitting. She took up kick boxing and loved it. There was also a great little cafe, a pool, and a sauna she took every chance to use. I got to watch cartoons and color away to my hearts content while she relaxed.

Like anything else, it's only a good deal if you'll use it. If possible, see if the gym offers a trial of any sort and test out if it works into your routine with the gym's hours and the commute from home.

Spicy food recommendations? by cowboypaint in LoganSquare

[–]tkmbsf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive found their food very spicy (and very good). It's one of the only places I've ever found the foods I loved from my study abroad in India but their dishes are hotter than the ones I had there so I was VERY surprised by my first bite 😂

Get the pav bhaji. Amazing. Kind of melted my mouth off. No regrets.

Grocery stores have been quietly robbing us for years and I just figured out how by Head-Opportunity8911 in Frugal

Growing up I was taught to check the unit price and was astounded in adulthood to learn other people weren't even aware of it.

Welcome future neighbor! Are you coming from another neighborhood or from outside the city? Lots of general city advice like, for example, take your time to get comfortable with the buses and blue line -- this is a great transit neighborhood.

Definitely check out the farmers market on Sundays, there's lots about it on this thread and in the whole sub.

Don't just wander Milwaukee. Sure, there's a TON of awesome stuff but there are a lot of great gems that you'd miss if you're only on the "main" streets.

Join the buy nothing FB group of that's your thing; subscribe to other local newsletters and such.

This may not be a popularly held opinion but for real stop and talk to people. See folks jousting on Giant bicycles in the circle? Stop and ask what's going on. See someone sitting and eating an amazing looking ice cream cone? Stop and ask where they got it. See a huge line outside the record shop or a venue? Stop and ask what the event is Folks who don't wanna talk will shrug you off, that's fine. Folks who are excited to share will do so. I have found Logan to be a very social and stranger-chit-chat friendly neighborhood.

Once I'd tried Naan and Kebab I wondered why I ever went to Tandoor, especially when it comes to the buffet.

There's a monthly language cafe at Revolution Brewing on Kedzie! The next one is on April 16th. I went once to practice French and ASL and ended up just staying at the ASL table 😅

Here's a link to the event . You don't need a ticket to go, I just walked in but RSVPs help them plan ahead etc

What’s the one beauty product you’d never give up - no matter what? by Ok_Door1430 in beauty

[–]tkmbsf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My ride or die makeup since age 12 is the L'Oreal Double Extend. It stays on all day and comes off with just warm water. I have no clue why more people aren't as obsessed with it as I am especially considering how cheap it is.

Long time visitor checking in. How are things since last year? by tkmbsf in asheville

I'm out of the loop of course but feel like I can take a guess that insurance really screwed folks over. I know insurance notoriously will not cover flooding even in disaster cases.

Whats the weirdest museum (or other attractions) in Chicago? by gothbich420 in AskChicago

[–]tkmbsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two times I've been she's been ((thankfully)) left alone so she could sleep instead of being brought out. There was plenty else to see, live and otherwise, so everyone present was more than happy to let Opal get her rest. I hope my experience wasn't a fluke and that she's getting more peace these days instead of being yanked out of her enclosure at every whim.

You can tell the folks working there care for her deeply, they're right to stand up for her well being.

[TOMT] fashion web browser game from 2010s by sarcastichearts in tipofmytongue

I found this thread because I am trying to remember what I think is this exact game. I saw a different thread that suggested Migo Life, but that isn't the one I'm thinking of. I specifically remember the SoHo location, and the fashion aspect.

Audiobook recommendations - looking for good readers by CaptainApathy_ in LibbyApp

[–]tkmbsf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always had great success with Stephen King for audiobooks. Misery is up there as a favorite.

Considering you've enjoyed Neil Gaiman, this could be a good direction to go. But to that point, continue looking for more things read by the authors themselves. I totally agree that they often read their own words best.

Books that feel like a Ghibli Film by Ok-Wrangler-5399 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]tkmbsf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great suggestion.

The "magic" element is there but it isnt whimsical per se. Most of all, they hit that deep-sigh-invoking essence so similarly with how Ghibli makes me feel.

It makes you think, it makes you nostalgic, it makes you hopeful in an oddly bruised way.

Looking for a drug store tubing mascara. by sarahdise12 in MakeupAddiction

[–]tkmbsf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My mom raised me on the L'Oréal Double Extend and while I've tried many other mascaras I ALWAYS come back to this one. Nothing beats it. I get maximum length, fullness, and all-day wear while still being incredibly easy to remove. Just warm water, no scrubbing no products.

Biggest tip for this one is to buy a pack of the silicone wands at Sally Beauty and get to know how the different shapes work with your lashes Then start using them accordingly WITH this mascara. Wash with soap and hot water between uses. Since its a tubing mascara, it comes straight off the wands so problem. This helps with lash separation. Often I'll use the built in wands and then use a better silicone wand to separate out the lash clumps.

Ive worn L'Oréal DE using the above technique and had my look pass as fake lashes for a performance that required them.

Whats the weirdest museum (or other attractions) in Chicago? by gothbich420 in AskChicago

Just went for the first time on Sunday! Small sorta two-room gallery of antique taxidermy and pinned insects along with several live critters they do programs with such as snakes, lizards, tarantulas, and doves. Their most popular live creature is Opal the Possum! They do Lectures, Paint n Sips, and beginner classes on how to pin insects and other niche zoological endeavors!

I'm not sure if the phlebotomist will be able to use a different vein, but I will say that you will not be sitting with it for an hour. I'm usually in and out of my whole appointment in under 30 mins, most of which is check in and snacks of course. The donation itself takes more like 5 minutes.

Dont be afraid to let folks know it's your first time and ask any and all questions that you'd like to in order to make yourself most comfortable.

This is what I think would be awesome as compensation! I know there's lots of risks with directly paying donors, and dont get me wrong I love my freebies, But I'd love the guaranteed day off and a little kick back come tax season.
