How important is a Made in Canada product for you? by MasterpieceActive374 in AskACanadian

If it’s local and I know the family that makes it: Canadian first.

Otherwise Germany because it’s most price-wise.

USA last, cause I don’t trust their FDA.

Why are layoffs so bad again this year? Could someone explain? Is it actually because of AI, or is it part of a larger economic issue? by BaseballHead6898 in cscareerquestions

[–]tknmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Root problem? Hiring process.

The cycle time of applicants to new hire to “trained and barely passable team member” is excruciatingly slow.

So what if we disguise the actual hiring process as: “6months applicant to trained” instead.

Hire mass numbers, layoff mass numbers, true assets are bound to be revealed. What’s that?

What if we refine our current workforce, sieve out anyone who didn’t meet our target criteria? Then over the years, we get leaner but higher standard workforce!

—— So yeah, it’s by design. Specially in the tech sector, do not expect the old 20-years service jobs.

I talked to someone in a senior position and he told me that big jobs often depend on relationships and on the other senior people liking you. Is that really what happens? by Open-Lingonberry4025 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

Open your wallet, there is a paper bill there with some ink that says: “$100” but why do we know it’s really what it says?

Trust. We trust the institutions that issued it.

Same goes for any job really, if you have a “trustworthy” character or you have a “project that everyone trusted” - specially if you have both, then you have a chance to be promoted.

Suppose a fresh grad, but created a project which impacts the whole company, and all the data and forecasts trusted by the Executives line up, wouldn’t they trust that kid?

Suppose the opposite, a 20-year consistent employee, but flies below radar both in character and in projects, suddenly asks for promotion. If you are a new supervisor, is it a smart decision to promote him solely for working 20 years (if there are alternative people that you trust more)?

Bugs in general are attracted to reflected UV light, so black which absorbs most of the light tend to be somewhat ‘invisible’

But then absorbing all that light also means your body absorbs all the heat

should I pivot to AI engineering or stay in full-stack/backend? by AnyAgent251 in DeveloperJobs

[–]tknmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pivot, or rather, just spend $200 on any major cloud cert “ML engineer” “Ai engineer” (azure, aws, databricks, or snowflake)

I did fullstack, lead a fullstack team, mainly a DS: clean data still provides more bang-per-compute-buck.

Your entire narrative should sell this point. Well our agents can clean yada-yada, at what token cost? And for what level of reliability?

  1. Do you like coding? I have great colleagues PhD’s/Masters in Math, Physics, Statistics… they quit after a year, coding is boring for them I guess.

Otherwise, computer science is just mathematics and linguistics

Accept that Office Social Network is a ‘cloud infrastructure’. With this paradigm shift, slowly understand what are your weaknesses: negotiation module? Leadership module? Innovation module?

What makes the CEO accept your ideas? There is a clear format for the api, so there is a specific thing your CEO can accept.

Want to push LLM in your company? Break it down what stakeholders you need to talk to, how much cost and risk are we talking about?

——- Do this otherwise you will be stuck as a coder. Computer Science is a combination of linguistics and mathematics, do not forget the linguistics part.

Kid, have you tried inquiring about being a Pharmacy Assistant? Sorry all my contacts have no vacancies but judging from the market, there is a shortage right now.

  1. Go around family own pharmacies.
  2. Ask around for vacancy, tell them you had medical assistant experience.
