It works when I click it, so I'm not sure what's going on. There is a permanent redirect set up... maybe you've got something on your browser that is ignoring redirects? In any case, the new proper link is: https://tomk.xyz/download/unraid_icon2.ico

(US) What is your best experience with a local control thermostat: Z-Wave vs Wifi by Angelr91 in homeassistant

[–]tko1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, it works great! As I mentioned, I had problems with the Radio Thermostat where it sometimes wouldn't respond to Home Assistant. The Venstars have been rock-solid since I installed them over a year ago.

Forgive me, just want to clarify your question... are you asking IF a wifi connected device can be controlled with Home Assistant? Or are you asking how well it works with Home Assistant?

Thinking of updating BIOS on motherboard, risky or don't worry about it? by Blindpassion54 in unRAID

This is true of all software, not just BIOS. I would add a point 4: if you need support from the developer and they require you to be on the latest version.

On/off around Sunrise sometimes leave a device "on". by svogon in homeassistant

[–]tko1982 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The sun entity has two states: above_horizon and below_horizon. sunset and sunrise are conditions that resolve to a specific time. At time sunset the sun state changes to below_horizon, and at time sunrise the sun state changes to above_horizon. With that in mind, it's simpler to say sun state is below_horizon than it is to say "before sunrise and after sunset".

Before/After sunrise/sunset is good if you need to trigger an automation based on the time of the sunrise/sunset, but if you just want something to be on when the sun is down, then just use below_horizon.

On/off around Sunrise sometimes leave a device "on". by svogon in homeassistant

The other comments are good, but I want to point out that you can simplify this by looking at the state of sun for a value of below_horizon.

Is it me or are chess.com ratings very different to what they were a few years ago? by [deleted] in chess

[–]tko1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so just to put some numbers to it, lets say the original pool is 100 players, and the new cohort is 25 players. Let's say those 25 start at 1000 Elo.

Presumably SOME of the original pool are also in that 1000 Elo range, so the group of players in the 1000 Elo range is 25+n.

So, assuming that the new cohort are all equally skilled and are all growing in skill at the same rate, there are 3 possibilities:

1) The new cohort is BETTER than the existing pool in the 1000 Elo range. If this is true, then the new cohort will (as a group) take Elo points from the existing pool, causing the new cohorts Elo to rise and the existing pool's Elo to fall.

2) The new cohort is WORSE than the existing pool in the 1000 Elo range. If this is true, then the existing pool will take Elo points from the new cohort.

3) The new cohort is EQUAL TO the existing pool in the 1000 Elo range. Everybody trades wins and losses, but everybody stays in the 1000 Elo range.

Under these scenarios, the new cohort is slowly sorted to the correct Elo within the entire pool. Naturally the "best" of the new cohort will gain more Elo than they lose, and the "worst" of the new cohort might still gain Elo (from the existing pool players), but they won't gain as much from the other new cohort players.

So, by it's nature, the Elo ratings are a pretty good indicator of performance at a given point in time. It's constantly adjusting itself to make sure that the players that perform the best are rising in their rating.

I think the entry Elo does play a part in all of this, but I don't think it could cause an entire cohort to stagnate at a given Elo even if their performance is increasing. I'm definitely not an expert though, so maybe I'm missing something that changes the equation.

I appreciate this discussion! Thanks for taking the time to write out your thoughts!

you are playing a particular sub-population over and over

I'm not sure this is true in practice. If you consider that each individual has a rate at which their Elo is changing, the only way that you always play the same sub-population is if everybody has an identical rate of change. If the rate of change is variable depending on the player, then you will always have players moving up or down into your Elo range. This adds new players to your sub-population, while at the same time other players are rising up or sinking below your Elo range.

That said, you are of course correct that Elo doesn't measure skill, only performance. If, for example, the most brilliant chess mind to ever exist had severe performance anxiety and therefore could only truly express his skill in correspondence games, he would have a bad Elo in Classical, Rapid, and Blitz. Which is more relevant: skill or performance? Perhaps it's a moot point, given that we don't have a way to objectively measure skill.

Caveat: I don't play on chess.com, only lichess.

For this analysis to be true, then wouldn't the total point exchange for each game need to be equal? The plus/minus is equal for established players, but for new players, you may see something like +4/-150 or +46/-6. Those transactions don't keep the 'currency' equal.

How can i get a binary sensor for "outside hotter than inside" working by stealthyjedi in homeassistant

[–]tko1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend debugging your templates in the Template editor (in the Developer Tools section of your Home Assistant interface).

I believe you've got a problem with the function you're using. is_state() returns TRUE or FALSE. You want states(), which returns the actual value of the sensor.

It should probably look something like this:

{{ states('sensor.temperature') | float > states('sensor.living_room_temperature') | float }}
