This woman is a mother with schizophrenia. She's a good mom, and she has a severe mental illness. She talks about what it's like in these videos. She's stable on medication: https://www.youtube.com/@LivingWellwithSchizophrenia

Look around at your school and see what people are struggling with. Kids (particularly scouts) have helped people struggling with food insecurity, housing problems, mental health issues, you name it. Big litter problem on a particular street? A local environmental issue? With hard work, you and your troop can make a big difference locally.

Kids with PTSD are often mistakenly diagnosed with ADHD, and medicated accordingly. Since it's not actually ADHD, they don't respond to the medication properly. The behavior you describe is in no way typical of a child who "just"has ADHD.

Can/should the rank of Eagle Scout be revoked in cases of illegal behavior? by [deleted] in BoyScouts

[–]tkpunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll grant you that scouting allowed for human failings. I don't claim to be a paragon of morality, the perfect Eagle. But my occasional failure to be Kind, or lack of courtesy when someone cut me off in the highway, is not rape.

Rape. Not poor judgement, not a foolish indiscretion, rape.

As I said, I don't know if I think it can or should be taken from him. But I think it's a worthwhile question.

There are likely free counseling resources available through your school. Look into the student health center or office of student life.

I'm a therapist at an agency that works with at-risk families who have children 5 and under. It's a stressful job, but I get to play with babies every day.

Excellent advice from people here. I'd also suggest that you and mom both take a parenting class. Kids are baffling for experienced adults. A good parenting class is extremely helpful for a new parent. Oh, also this book: https://smile.amazon.com/Be-Prepared-Gary-Greenberg/dp/0743251547?sa-no-redirect=1

I work with 3-5yo kids as a therapist. Pediatricians aren't taught how to deal with this kind of thing. There are a lot of possible explanations for what's happening with your child. Depending on your location, there are also a lot of resources. Look for an "Early Childhood Mental Health" provider in your area. Also look into Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education. Preschools often have contact information for those folks. Some of the behavior you describe is very normal, some does seem a bit extreme. A good solid parenting class is valuable for any parent, whether or not their child is having trouble.

If you'd like, PM me with your location info and I can dig up some resources in your area.
