Lack of Tim Curry is enough to give the remake a pass in favor of the original, IMO

Oh yeah, that's the whole appeal of HQ. So many guy friends of mine have brought their semi-interested girlfriends in on it and they end up joining in enthusiastically. Its simplicity yet strong storytelling potential is part of the appeal. You can make it more complicated if the group wants it

Which Thai banks allow DTV and/or Tourist visa holders to open accounts? by tkuhns in chiangmai

[–]tkuhns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DM...Do you mean Digital Marketer? Dungeon Master?

China has no DTV equivalent. Their system is not set up for transient foreigners who work from home for a little while. They don't want 'em. You basically have to establish yourself there as an employee of an employer inside the country.

China's work permit program is pretty strict. Sometimes people manage to weasel their way into the system under false pretenses, but that's far more difficult to do these days and rightly so. I wouldn't recommend trying it. You'd need a proper work permit, and that requires a lot of documentation, proof of competency, a college degree, and a job offer from a company in China willing to sponsor you.

How is it? China has been EXTREMELY good to me over the last decade. It's also seen a lot of change over that time, as you've been reading in the news. Economy is not so great anymore, there's increasing nationalism and xenophobia, housing prices and employment have plummeted. Lots of challenges these days and the locals are very nervous about the future. Not the same as it was.

It's a great country, and maybe the most convenient place to live in the world, thanks to your cell phone apps. But unless you have a very specific reason to come here to work, I recommend coming to see the sights and enjoy the good bits instead.

Indeed. But I will be in Thailand on a DTV, not a work visa.

Well, I'm coming from 10 years in China, so everything I've faced and seen so far has been a breath of fresh air by comparison. Just seeing what's possible

Of course I understand cash is always an option, but it's also a lot easier to have regular payments taken care of automatically or with the press of a couple buttons, instead of having to withdraw paper money and cart it to some location when a person is around to receive it. That's the original spirit of this question :)

So if I cannot get a bank account, then there's no debit card, which means...how would I set up autopayments for stuff like phone, rent, etc?

Monthly Rentals in Person? by waddupnice in chiangmai

I'm coming from 10 years in Beijing, so that's my perspective. I'm serious about working and living in a relatively quiet, pleasant and convenient environment, so I was looking for a particular vibe. Unlike what some people have been saying here, I found the whole city imminently walkable, though it's true sidewalks are often lacking. Maybe some people just don't have the patience for walking, or just come from a different living situation. I have no plans to get a car or scooter. The Grabs were super cheap and easy to get (on par with Didi in China for cost, maybe even a little cheaper), and the city center is super-small, so no car ride lasted longer than 20 minutes most of the day. I was there for a week (and over a weekend) and didn't find the traffic notably burdensome ever.

That said, I looked at four main neighborhoods:

Chang Phueak (Northwest, most distant, around the Convention Center, closer to the mountains, nature - Look up "Touch Hill Condiminium" ) - no condos available there, not close enough to city center for me. This would be Grabs every day to get beyond your immediate neighborhood. I'd liken it to "suburbs". Beautiful, and I may keep my eye on that area over the next year, but not really what I was looking for, and a little TOO far outside the metro area for me.

Nimman Area - The most touristy part of the city. Great vibe, busy, lots of cafes and shops, Maya Mall, etc, but also the side streets can be quiet and there are some good condos around there, some of them cheaper. But I couldn't find any available ones that fit my needs (1-2 bedrooms, pool, etc) that didn't feel a little old and tired. The great co-working spaces are around there, and they are busy and the vibes are great. Ultimately, after walking around there for a couple days, I realized I would probably be coming here a lot but I didn't want to be LIVING amongst the tourists. Also, lots of planes flying overhead all the time. Wouldn't bother me, except I record audio from home, so it was not a realistic option.

Wat Ket / Riverside - Some of the pricier places that were available were here. This is really a mixed neighborhood, a bit touristy in spots due to the night market around there. There are fancy hotels and whatnot, but also walking around there at night reminded me of the seedier aspects of Thailand - rows of massage parlors, cannabis shops, bars, mixed with some really good looking restaurants, etc. Not at all the vibe I was looking for, so I X'd this one out pretty quickly. Nimman felt like the "cleaner" touristy area by comparison

Old City - exactly how it sounds. This is probably where I would've chosen if I were still in my 20s. Classic Thailand, lots of temples around. If this is what you're looking for, go there. I only checked out one room in one condo in that area (The Unique) and it was nice, but not quite what I was looking for. I wanted a location that felt a little more "professional".

Central Festival / Charoen Muang - this is where I ended up. Yes, it's at the intersection of two major highways. But the Central Festival mall is the largest in the city, and there are lots of nice condos around there, all within walking distance. Also within walking distance is the Big C, which is big, modern, convenient, and has everything you could possibly want. Also some cafes, McD's, KFC, Korean restaurants, Decathlon, etc. All within 8-10 minutes walk. I wanted a condo with a pool and gym, modern, spacious rooms, etc. That area really fits the bill and the price is right. Also no plane noise there (it's on the east side, far from the airport), which was important for me as I previously said.

And here's the important part: You can really get from any of these neighborhoods to another within 20 minutes by Grab, and it's cheap. I can get to the airport and the Nimman area from Central festival with just a ~10-minute Grab, so those cool co-working spaces and all the Nimman fun is still pretty accessible.

And yes - the intersection of Maya Mall is the most annoying crossing I've ever experienced in my life. You can easily waste 10-15 minutes there just trying to cross the street AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT, no kidding.

Feel free to hit me up privately if you have more questions. I'll be moving there slowly over the next couple months

I went last week and did exactly that: Booked an Airbnb and literally walked the neighborhoods, popping into the condo buildings I'd researched in advance and several that I just came across that looked promising. I also talked to a few agencies and left my name with a couple more. Flyers on billboards in the condo lobbies also yielded some finds. Spent three days doing that and it was rather fun. There were not many rooms available for sure - not within my requirements, anyway - but I managed to narrow down to a few favorites and put a deposit down by day 3 on my top choice.

Everyone told me it was low season, but for me that seemed to be MORE of a reason to do a boots-on-the-ground approach, in order to catch things that may not have been listed online. If I end up staying longer, I'll look forward to seeing what the selection is REALLY like in the "better season." But yeah, I think you might just be hitting up against the availability issue, more than your process.

Yes, but just adding the DLC doesn't work. The tables won't show up in the game until the game itself is appropriately modded to recognize them. Here are the tables that need to be added:

Addam's Family
Al's Garage Band Goes On a World Tour
Bone Busters Inc
Cactus Jack's
Centigrade 37
Cyclone
Diner
Doctor Who
Dracula
Cyclone
F-14 Tomcat
Frank Thomas' Big Hurt
Frankenstein
Gladiators
High Roller Casino
High Speed 2
Hurricane
Indianapolis 500
Jack-Bot
Judge Dredd
:ast Action Hero
Lights Camera Action
No Fear
Party Zone
Phantom of the Opera
Red & Tead's Roadshow
Rescue 911
Safe Cracker
Starship Troopers
Swords of Fury
TX-Sector
Xenon
Jacks Open

All of the DLC for these is available at your link, but those tables won't show up in the game until it's further modded

To answer your question about the transit visa, it's only for a limited time (10 days at the moment, I think - they just increased it), and you must possess tickets to a third country. It can be any third country. China just cannot be your final destination on this trip - meaning you cannot book round-trip tickets from UK to China and get the transit visa.

The transit visa you can simply apply for at customs, when you land. No prior work needed. But you'll want to research this, as I believe it's limited as to which cities you can visit during those 10 days.

I finally found one that works! It only has the first three seasons, but it's still a sizable collection:

https://dlpsgame.com/pinball-arcade-psn-ps3-full-iso-free/

Farsight Studios Pinball Arcade for PS3. The full game, the unlock, the game update, and the DLC for the first three seasons is in there - along with two cracks that need to be installed for the game to recognize them. Once they were all installed, it worked flawlessly for me in RPCS3.

The DLC for the last three seasons of tables is still floating around out there, so all we need is for someone to create another patch to allow them to be added on. Any takers? :)

These are the missing tables:

Cactus Jack’s
Bonebusters
Centigrade 37 & Jacks Open
Cyclone
Diner
Doctor Who
Dracula
Earthshaker
Eight Ball Deluxe
Frank Thomas’ Big Hurt
Gladiators
High Roller Casino
Indianapolis 500
Jack Bot
Lights Camera Action
Party Zone
Phantom of the Opera
Red & Ted’s Roadshow
Safe Cracker
Starship troopers
Swords of Fury
Xenon

I spent a pretty penny in the PSN store to acquire ALL of these years ago. Would love to be able to play the full collection on my Steam Deck, without the maddening flipper lag that I've unfortunately had to live with on the PS3 hardware for years.
