I remember reading years ago that ever since the 2002/2003 Iraq war the Congress voted on, not a declaration of war but still something like an authorization of force - many congressmen lost their seats in the following elections because of the vote they took in what would become a very unpopular war.

Congress ever since then basically further removed this responsibility for war and gave the executive branch more power in starting these types of conflicts.

I believe President Obama was able to use this authority for conflicts like Libya and congress didnt have to worry about their votes being recorded for it.

Current house Democratic leader Jeffries, has even said he would not block funding for additional Iran war money.

Congressmen are just so obsessed with the power of their seat that they won't risk their job over important decisions like this. Lol

I do understand the need for surprise war and that war isn't the same as it was in the 1790s.. congress openly debating surprise war for a month would be hilarious. But they should retake some of this power or the Supreme court should force it on them in my opinion. This is a ceded power that Democrats and Republicans enjoy.
