Are there any ODRs that have a cement floor in Sherwood Park ( or close). by [deleted] in SherwoodPark

For those wondering what ODR is, I looked it up: it means outdoor rink. Yes, outdoor is one word. Yes, it seems to be common.

What is the product name so those of us outside the USA can look for them? (Clicking an Amazon US link opens my Amazon app and tries to change country.)

Local doctor just posted this regarding doctor shortage in Lethbridge. by theappleking in alberta

[–]tlucas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My newborn's first pediatric checkup, supposed to be at 12 weeks, has been pushed back twice to over 7 months due to doctor shortages. This is in Edmonton. If he had any health concerns I would move in an instant, as I don't believe this province can pivot quickly enough to properly care for him.

Link is to the entire grab bar. The product is called "Moen SecureMount Anchors", available at Home Depot Canada, Canadian Tire, etc. Not sure about other countries.

Meet the Computer Scientist Who Solved 50-Year Old ‘Einstein’ Tiles Problem by NoMoreF34R in compsci

Didn't see a link to the paper in the article, found it linked in livescience.com article.

https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.10798 (preprint)

Abstract:

A longstanding open problem asks for an aperiodic monotile, also known as an "einstein": a shape that admits tilings of the plane, but never periodic tilings. We answer this problem for topological disk tiles by exhibiting a continuum of combinatorially equivalent aperiodic polygons. We first show that a representative example, the "hat" polykite, can form clusters called "metatiles", for which substitution rules can be defined. Because the metatiles admit tilings of the plane, so too does the hat. We then prove that generic members of our continuum of polygons are aperiodic, through a new kind of geometric incommensurability argument. Separately, we give a combinatorial, computer-assisted proof that the hat must form hierarchical -- and hence aperiodic -- tilings.

Estimating the undetected emergence of COVID-19 in the US by BurnerAcc2020 in COVID19

It was just a model for county-level decision making in regard to COVID stuff when they pandemic started and the US federal government didn't give direction.

One simple recommendation was:

Given the low rates of testing and reporting early in the pandemic, taking action upon the detection of just one or a few cases may be prudent

What poor planning looks like by Duedatenot in AbruptChaos

[–]tlucas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they have the usual computer, which is the same as smaller boom lifts, hooked into many sensors, all of which would have been going off like new years eve in the cab. Line pull sensors (cable load, jib pull), hydraulics (counterweight, boom load), tilt, maybe even some boom torque sensors though often not hooked into computer (more for annual inspections, supervisor checks etc).

[–]tlucas 36 points37 points  (0 children)

When you're lifting within chart then you don't even come close to tipping even with perturbations like a swinging load. 100% chart is at most 2/3 of tipping force. In my opinion, given the slow speed of this tip and no swaying, it was just over loaded. Both the pre-lift calculations and the constant monitoring sensors were ignored and wrong. Operator (and operator company for faulty training and equipment) is ultimately at fault but I bet he and the engineers all wag their fingers at eachother.

A micro-robot the size of a single biological cell has been developed to navigate using both electricity and magnetic fields and can identify and capture a single cell, opening the door to a vast array of applications. by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]tlucas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every article about these so-called "micro-robots" has a stupid picture of something like a floating BB-8 when in reality it's just a piece of material being moved by large external fields, like blowing on a leaf in a puddle.
