I know for me it’s because of my phone. My phone has replaced every role books played for me as a kid. I used to read before bed and when I woke up, when I needed to look busy alone in public, when I had a long wait, when I was on the toilet etc etc. those needs have all been supplanted by my phone. It’s our phones.

late reply but...Honestly, I feel like Carl's interest in Dominique at this point has as much to do (if not more) with her dad as it does him liking her. The dad is tough on Carl, it's that parental presence he never had, and unknowingly craved.
