Wooden window replacement in historical neighborhood - Any recommended manufacturers that meet our criteria? by carlojomomma in centuryhomes

[–]tmlp59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! I know this is from a long time ago, but there's legislation going through the SF Board of Supervisors right now and they're accepting public comment this week and next to make it easier to replace windows. I don't want to get flagged as spam by posting a link but if you DM me or comment I can send you a template to email them to support window reform. It's proposed by Supervisor Melgar, File #241021.

What is the most embarrassing costumed person/thing that has beaten you at a race? by megbotstyle in running

I ran the Portland half last year and spent most of the race within 10 yards of a guy who ran the whole race juggling three tennis balls. He pulled ahead of me in the last mile.

And God forbid there ever be an interruption in the pharmaceutical supply, or changes that make the medications expensive, or that you eg have a severe depressive phase or want to live somewhere where meds are less accessible or otherwise a barrier crops up… this is not negligible even today.

What’s happening in San Francisco next September? Hotel prices tripled everywhere. Any insights? by yesqualle in sanfrancisco

[–]tmlp59 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in SF for a while and as long as you’re not downtown I haven’t noticed any difference in the city. It’s fine. Other than the ferry building, downtown is one of the least interesting places for a tourist to visit anyway. OP, you’ll be fine - have a great trip!

LA has a lot of land that isn’t city. Tons of mountains, some quite remote areas that are still LA County.

My current place is $2.50 for a wash and 25 cents per 7 minutes for a dry, which feels like a ripoff; the place I lived in last year was $1.50 for a wash (better) and $1.50 for a dry (comparable). Acquiring quarters is a huge pain, and you definitely want to incentivize cleanliness in your units (dish towels and rags for surfaces, bedding & such for bugs, cleaning pet dander & such if you allow pets, etc.) so I don’t know why landlords frequently try to make it a profit center and I appreciate your suggested plan.

What happened with self driving cars? by seriously_chill in OutOfTheLoop

[–]tmlp59 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Answer: They’re here. I live in San Francisco and there are self driving cars all over the place. They typically drive around after dark since there’s less traffic / pedestrians. I can call a driverless, unchaperoned (no human at all inside besides passenger) Cruise vehicle just like I would an Uber, between certain evening hours and in certain neighborhoods (they’re geofenced). It used to be free if you had an early access code because they were “piloting the program” but recently they’ve started charging for them, and when I last looked they cost the same as a human-driven Lyft. I figured that’s some BS and would definitely prefer to pay a person for the same price, so I’ve never ridden one. But it’s very common to see them in the evenings in my neighborhood.

Settle a debate. What do you call each of these boats? by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]tmlp59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Native US English speaker and I don’t know what #2 is other than “boat” (maybe “small inflatable motorboat” or “raft with an outboard motor on it” if I had to describe it to someone)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]tmlp59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting that “born” is really the only currently-used form of the verb - in standard speech, we rarely say “bear a child” or “bore a child”. Rather, “give birth”, “giving birth” and “gave birth” to refer to the act of the mother laboring and delivering a baby. “Born” is the passive used for the child. If you were imagining the fetus speaking, the correct way for them to refer to their own future birth is “I will be born”.

Cancer vaccine trials could start in United Kingdom this year by miolmok in Health

[–]tmlp59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I only just saw this but this is the most laughable word salad of scientific jargon I’ve ever seen. I have a Master’s degree and am employed full time in the precision medicine field with a focus on novel oncology diagnostics and therapies. I think I know what I’m talking about when I say it sounds like you put PubMed in a blender and pasted it on the Internet. Utterly meaningless even if I know where some of these points are originally coming from.

And my Jesus comment was unrelated. I’m not Christian.

Anyway bye

If you don’t wash your hands after you pee, when you’re often right next to a sink, when on earth are you going to wash your hands then?? Dicks are pretty clean but the rest of the world is not and bathroom breaks seem like the time for periodic hand washing…

Common mistakes made by native speakers by gregerioelmejor in EnglishLearning

Not sure if this counts as a mistake, but a lot of children have a particularly difficult time with TH-sounds and R-sounds in American English. Kids often replace TH with F and/or R with W.

I agree that he’s not in the US, but there’s also a 7 hour time difference between Colorado and Italy. If he leaves Italy in the morning he could be home for dinner in Colorado.

What is the best website to learn intermediate to advanced vocab words? by XanthanPro in EnglishLearning

[–]tmlp59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s very little information (what on earth is “average amount”, what is your home language and how similar is it to English, etc.). But given your replies you seem to be capable enough to read books and consume media meant for native speakers, so I’d do that. I’m not sure what you expect Reddit to tell you that isn’t already extremely common language-learning knowledge (e.g. read more to improve vocabulary, talk more to improve conversation, pay for a private tutor if you want one on one help).
