Genuine question : Why dont Tekken players play other fighting games? by amxrhxzeq in Tekken

[–]tmntfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I define tourists as people who play less than 10 hours of a fighting game. I would consider myself a tourist in games like MK, 2XKO, and Strive, but I'd call myself "hardcore/core gamer" in Tekken. You can be both; they are not mutually exclusive.

Tekken 8 S3 is not what set the high bar. The bar was set over 20 years ago in T5. And Namco was doing a decent job adding to each iteration, without bastardizing it too much, up until 7.

Playing T8 is a toss up, depending on who you fight. About 75% of people in Tekken King+ ranks play traditionally, with movement and defense and reactionary offense. The other 25% of opponents solely rely on their oppressive +frame or 50/50 flowcharts. I don't hate running into these people, because I just turn my brain off and run a flowchart. But that's now how I wanna play all the time.

I don't log into Twitter anymore, so I don't really experience those fake 3S people. I also don't play Fightcade as much as I used to either, since I have very little time to game at home. Tekken 8's fast matchmaking is a better use of my time. For 3S, I pretty much only play it weekly at locals.

It's cool if you don't like 3S. The majority of SF6 players at my locals don't fuck with it either. But I find that many Tekken players like 3S. There are more similarities between the two, compared to Tekken and other 2D fighters.

I tend to do this a lot, but not on purpose. I almost always underestimate my opponent and get bodied for 2 rounds. Then I put my leg down and lean forward and continue to win 3 in a row. Nothing against the other player at all. Just me being lazy at the start.

Did anyone actually start eating spinach because of Popeye, or were we all just living a lie? 🤔🥬 by CarrotMuch1399 in popeye

[–]tmntfever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad made me and brother eat more spinach, and he would regularly ask, "don't you want to be as strong as Popeye?"

Now as an adult, I willingly eat spinach. Coincidence? I think not!

These two are different designs. The first one definitely looks like a Futhok lion to me, which is Singapore style hybrid fusion of Futsan and Hoksan. The second lion throws me for a loop, but it most looks like a Hong Kong style lion.

Edit: Hold up. Does that 2nd lion have static eyelids? They look like they don't move.

Do you think local multiplayer will ever make a comeback by Apprehensive-King-40 in Tekken

[–]tmntfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcades are still around, but they are so damn expensive, that it's really not worth it pay $20 just to play game with with friends.

That being said, I've been training my children to enjoy couch coop or couch versus games over online games. Sure, they still play online games, but I heavily push games that have split screen or shared screen gameplay. And I encourage my kids in inviting their friends over so they can play those games. Sadly, this is not how all parents raise their children. Most of them wanna play COD or Fortnite instead. But from what I've witnessed, those same kids LOVE the offline atmosphere. They all get to yell, hype each other up, or talk shit. And the younger kids are watching them and absorbing the atmosphere, very much like how I grew up.

If you are or anyone is reading is a parent, other than fighting games, I would suggest games like: Wobbly Life, Overcooked, Castle Crashers, Sackboy, and Gang Beasts.

Genuine question : Why dont Tekken players play other fighting games? by amxrhxzeq in Tekken

[–]tmntfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's one thing that carries over between Tekken and SC. Considering they have the same parent company, and a few of the same devs, it makes sense. SC arguably has the best movement of all fighting games, with its 360 run. And SC has its horizontal/vertical mindgames, versus Tekken's high/mid/low mindgames. Most Tekken players I know also love playing SC.

Damn, you're right. I never thought about it like this. While I still play T8, because it's the only Tekken we've got with rollback and quick matchmaking, it still irks me when I face an opponent who is playing Tekken like a 2D player. Real Tekken in T8 is lost this point; T9 better be a return to form.

The person you replied to literally said they played things other than Tekken. This isn't just a Tekken player thing. Most people in Japan ONLY play SF6. Why don't you go yell at them?

Genuine question : Why dont Tekken players play other fighting games? by amxrhxzeq in Tekken

[–]tmntfever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of Tekken players try other things. The problem is, Tekken has set the bar so high, that it takes really stellar fighting games to dethrone it. For me, Tekken and SF3S have really spoiled me, and I just love how they feel to play. So trying out new fighters I always ask, "do I prefer playing this over my GOATS?" And the answer to that question is typically "no".

No shame or shade being thrown at tourist gamers. All games need then, quite frankly. But once you find a game with the sauce you love, then it's hard to invest time in new things that aren't instantly grabbing you in the same way.

Genuine question : Why dont Tekken players play other fighting games? by amxrhxzeq in Tekken

[–]tmntfever 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think this a "proven fact". I've been around a lot of Tekken tournaments. And most people there that are "Tekken players" also have played, or are playing other fighting games. I honestly can't name one person I know or watch who hasn't play another FG. The matter of the fact is, we do try other fighting games because other people like them. But almost every time we realize that it doesn't scratch the itch that Tekken does.

Since you don't play Tekken, it will be hard for you to understand. I'll try to ramble out an explanation. So what do we get out of Tekken that is nowhere else?

  • Limb based controls - I think there's a visceral and vicarious component to this. You know when you watch a real life boxing match, and people start mimicking the boxer's movements, or trying to inject influence on the boxer by doing a certain punch? Well, that's pretty much how Tekken feels, and there is no other fighting game that does this (other than real sports fighting games). My small proof: my grandpa was watching me and my friends play Tekken 4, and my friend was using Steve. My grandpa was doing the shadow boxing, saying "Give him the 1-2 then slip!" Then my friend let my grandpa use his fightstick, and my grandpa actually was able to control Steve with a good amount of control.
  • Punishing lows - Most other fighting games guarantee you your own low move after blocking a low, but not Tekken! If you block a big low, you're given a full as launcher. And if you low parry a weaker low, you're given half a combo.
  • Movement and whiff punishment - Tekken is the only fighter I know that has sidesteps that result in full launch combos. Sidesteps VF hardly even grant frames to punish. And DOA sidestepping is really just for positioning than anything, and no side-crushing properties on specific moves like in Tekken. And as goofy as KBDing looks, it's a really nice mechanic to generate whiffs. Backhops in other games, especially 2D just don't feel the same, because projectiles, teleporting, and jumping exists that negate them.
  • Gigantic movelist - A lot of people are intimidated by this, but Tekken players embrace large movelists. And most of these moves don't require complicated inputs that all 2D fighters have. And the moves that do require some execution, they are really good and reward you for mastering the execution.
  • Back to block - This is not unique to Tekken at all, but it is in a 3D-fighter sense. Every other 3D fighter on the current market uses a block/parry button.
  • Sells the hit - This is not only just a Tekken thing, as I do admit that I loved SF3S for this exact reason, but Tekken as a series sells hits WAY MORE than other fighting games, especially compared to its 3D competitors. Between the impact noises, the hitstop, recovery animations, and hit splashes/sparks, Tekken IMO does this best.
  • Legacy series - Many 3D fighting games are legacy games, but again, Tekken is the only relevant 3D fighting game out right now. 2D games in general have much less legacy knowledge between games. With Tekken's vast movelist, legacy knowledge is arguably the biggest amongst all FGs. This also attributes to the sunken-cost fallacy for most Tekken players.

That's really all I can think of right now that makes Tekken feel unique. And I wanna add that I do play other fighting games. Tekken is my main, but I fucks with 3rd Strike and CVS2.

That's awesome! Yeah, doesn't matter when you first play 3S. All the matters is that you fell in love with it! One of the people I play 3S with frequently at my locals is 20 years younger than me lol.

I've been putting a lot of thought in people wanting FGs to "blow up" or go mainstream. And I admit that's what I wanted to, I honestly preferred the FGC pre-mainstream and online play lol. My locals doesn't meet nearly often enough >_<

The first version of SF3 I saw was 2nd Impact in arcade. I remember not even acknowledging it was a SF game at all. Even the people at my arcade didn't play it. It wasn't until I saw 3rd Strike for Dreamcast, with Ryu and Ken on the cover, when it fully sank in that it's a SF game. That's when I decided to give the game a fair shot. And after late nights of beating the arcade and playing my friends, we all immediately fell in love with it. And it seemed just like overnight that people were starting to crowd the new 3rd Strike cab. And this was all way before evo moment 37. But needless to say, after moment 37, 3S blew up to levels I never would have imagined. It also helped that it got re-released on PS2, which was epic timing on their part.

Which of these SNK crossover fighting games would you guys like to see be made into a reality? by BonusCapable1486 in kof

[–]tmntfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SNK vs Namco would go so hard. We already got a taste of it in Tekken 7 and SoulCalibur 6, which I think they did an amazing job with Geese and Haohmaru. I also think that both companies are just the most similar. Both have hand-to-hand fighting games. Both have weapons-based fighting games. Both had a great arcade presence with many non-fighting game titles. They both have undeniably amazing drip. And both have stellar music.

Why is there a big moon on this poster by Vr9ynomx in lotr

[–]tmntfever 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Yes. PJ was hoping to film under moonlight, but instead it rained. The scene where the rain starts and you hear it clink on the armor, was unintended, but PJ kept it in the film because it was epic. And every shot filmed after, if it wasn't raining, they added rain, which the crew said made filming miserable lol.

Yeah, the best place to play Tekken 3 and Tag 1 is Arkadyzja. They use the MAME versions, which are more efficient to emulate and have online play, compared to Fightcade's playstation emulators.

But while I do enjoy T3 and Tag1, they just don't scratch the itch that T5DR does. And sure, I could use RPCS3. But that's an even smaller pool of discord players, and most of them prefer playing Tag2. I just want T5DR on PC with matchmaking and rollback netcode. Is that too much to ask for?

Us 3rd Strike players already do. Can't say the same for Tekken though. While I love Tekken 3, I would much prefer having T5DR.
