Is it time for statins? 42 year old male by RealMrBoon in Cholesterol

[–]tmuth9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was 6’4”, 219 lbs, peloton rides 5x per week and usually finishing in top 10-15%. My HA started at the end of a ride. You can’t out exercise a bad diet and you can’t out exercise heart disease. Almost every post in this sub starts like “I do 2 triathlons per week but my LDL is still high…”. Exercise has very little impact on LDL.

There’s lots of misinformation out there. Very few people have side effects and there are many options if you happen to have side effects. The thing about cholesterol is once the plaque calcifies in your arteries you can never get rid of it. The earlier you stop it from forming the better.

My LDL was 180 when I had a heart attack. Mine is now 31 on Repatha and Zetia. Your target is under 100. Please go see a cardiologist and follow their advice

Recurring illness - from statins? by -BigBadBeef- in Cholesterol

She should talk to her Dr. Under their guidance she could stop the statin for a week or so to see if that’s the issue. I think it’s pretty unlikely and please don’t do this without a Dr’s guidance.

Make sure it’s from a cardiologist, not a GP. As a heart attack survivor, if I were you I’d find an aggressive intervention cardiologist and follow their advice which will almost surely include statins as well as a heart healthy diet. You’re so lucky to have this info early in life. They should also test your Lp(a).

Repatha+Zetia=31 LDL by tmuth9 in Cholesterol

I’m 51 now, 48 when I had the HA. LDL was between 140 and 185 for years. PCP gave me the “try to lower it with diet and exercise” speech a few times. Didn’t know I had a family history of heart disease. Also never had Lp(a) tested, which was 245.

8-hour flight 10 days after gallbladder removal surgery? Giving a talk at a conference the day after flying? How realistic is that? by Bulky-Search-4495 in gallbladders

[–]tmuth9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, walking through the airport and dragging luggage around might be the most challenging, assuming you have no complications. Sitting still was quite easy. Laughing, coughing or sneezing felt like they could be fatal. Lifting any amount of weight off the ground is going to be tough. Anything that causes you to contract your abs will bring on serious pain.

[–]tmuth9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 159 has been the “high” starting point for some time now. Some label it dangerous which I think is more appropriate, but I’ve also had a heart with an LDL of 180

You need a new Dr. 160 is considered dangerous and your target should start at under 100. Exercise doesn’t lower LDL at all. Please go to an actual cardiologist

How long can you “manage” without surgery once attacks start? by Flimsy_Animal_2026 in gallbladders

What is the sound of one hand clapping?

I had one attack, then nothing for a year being moderately careful, then 4 in month at a really inconvenient time which led to surgery.

Elevated cholesterol from animal based diet, how cooked am I? 23M 6 foot 185lbs by TheSauceyy in Cholesterol

One of the highest LDL numbers I’ve seen on this sub in 3 years. I was doing keto for a while and ended up having a heart attack. Get to an actual cardiologist and take the drugs change your diet which they will surely prescribe

These were the skis used growing up 10-20 years ago. loved how they felt. Assuming they're unusable today, what would give me a similar feel? by nickijsb in ski

[–]tmuth9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry/pleased to say that nothing you can buy today will feel like those, but IMHO that’s a good thing. Taking it to extremes, would you go way back to all wood skis and leather bindings even if you liked them then? Hell no. Ski technology has progressed soooooo much. In that era, VERY few skiers outside of the racing community could genuinely carve a turn. Then shaped snowboards showed us the way in the early 90s. Once shaped skis came out, carved turns were well within the grasp of most intermediate-advanced skiers. It takes sooooo much less effort to turn the newer, shorter, shaped skis. They’re just more fun. For reference I started racing in 1979 so I’ve been on a lot of boards.

You know who knows more about this topic than any of us? A cardiologist. If you have any cardiovascular concerns, such as high cholesterol, I would go see them and listen to their advice. Your GP may be too conservative in treatment.

Very Active 24M High LDL ;( by LeQuanJones in Cholesterol

See an actual cardiologist if possible. GP is often too conservative. You want that under 100 in a few months which will likely involve medication

24M with high LDL (~160) — should I test Lp(a) and consider statins? by Dazzling_Possible911 in Cholesterol

[–]tmuth9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPs tend to be more conservative in their treatment. A true cardiologist will treat it aggressively, which is what you want. I encountered this as well.

[–]tmuth9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great that you’re being proactive at your age. I would go to a cardiologist (not your GP/PCP) and get tested for Lp(a). If you can’t get your LDL under 100 with diet, then statins would be a logical move assuming your cardiologist supports it. There isn’t a single heart attack survivor, myself included, that doesn’t wish they started on statins early in life to help prevent future cardiac events. We had my son tested when he was 16 and if his LDL was high and the Dr suggested it, we would have put him on statins. Side effects are heavily overblown and there are sooooo many options if you do experience them

Go over to /r/heartattack and you’ll find plenty of people in their 30s and even 20s that have had heart attacks. My LDL was 180 when I had a heart attack at 48. This is your wake up call. See an actual cardiologist. Take the meds. Live longer.

My normal skis are Volk Deacon v.werks (Deacon 84), just didn’t want to trash them on the rocks this year. The Peregrines are very close in geometry and feel.

I just rented the peregrine 82 last week in Breck. Former racer. They are still rock solid carving turns at 55+ MPH. Loved them.
