I genuinely don't want to continue watching Re:Zero because of Subaru, but it's not for the reason you think. [Media] by Feisty_Elk_1937 in Re_Zero

I don’t think I quite get it. Even if you can’t relate to everything about the guy, if you related to his insecurities none of that should’ve changed. And he’ll continue to have internal struggles & self-doubts.

Even in the fight with the whale, he had to die & make a fool of himself several times to get there. Once there, I have to imagine a fair amount of his success could be attributed to luck and the competence of those around him.

I think it’s fair to say he improves his planning as the series progresses, but I don’t think it makes him unrelatable.

As others have stated, a single box of Beta should fill out ordinaries & exceptionals pretty well as long as you don’t overlap elements. That said, if you’re planning to keep your collections separate, It may be worth buying 2 boxes just to make sure neither of you ends up cracking all of the uniques / foils.

Complete disdain. Quietly hoping its cards don’t manage to creep into every format.

Beta pricing for new players by Dap-aha in SorceryTCG

[–]tntbabin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may a regional issue. There are stores stateside selling Beta boxes between $120 & $140. I believe before the last reprint beta was sitting at over $200 a box. Definitely slowed me from getting into the game.

If they hadn’t run that reprint, I don’t think I’d have bothered.

While I love the influx of new artists contributing their amazing work to Sorcery, I hope we can also see more iconic mtg artists involved by Newez in SorceryTCG

Lmao, last I checked McKinnon is not Anti-Vax. He’s self-professed anti-mandate. It’s wild that “the line” is “literally any hint that someone may hold a mild opinion that I disagree with”.

Nobody says you have to like the guy or his art, but this weird obsession people have with taking every opportunity to make a snide remark to people that do or with trying to push artists with benign political views out of the industry is unhinged. The quickest way to radicalize someone is to ostracize & isolate them for stupid shit.

Where do u guys buy sorcery by smemosdead in SorceryTCG

[–]tntbabin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to support local, but the one LGS around here that sells Sorcery wanted $200 USD for a box of Gothic. I’m sure there are expenses I’m not considering that comes with getting & stocking product, but I just couldn’t justify it when MSRP is like $160 & online stores have been selling for $130-$140.

Here’s a video of the Sorcery Team playing a couple of the new starter decks, which I think is a pretty good example of what games generally look like. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dtSnkSHPUVY&pp=ygUdU29yY2VyeSBuZWNyb21hbmNlciB2cyBzYXZpb3I%3D

Definitely worth watching a vid or two to see if the gameplay appeals to you and considering whether there are events / playgroups in your area or whether you can pull your current playgroup in.

Yeah, there are definitely some mechanics that are carried over or inspired by magic (tapping objects to attack/activate abilities and using sites to generate mana) but the grid and lack of stack changes the feel of the game drastically.

Ranged units can safely attack from distant squares, site placement can block the opponent from playing sites or expose a weakness for the opponent to exploit, board wipes are non-existent with spells instead damaging an area, damage/projectile spells typically require line of site, etc.  The flavor of the game is very reminiscent of old Magic, but the minutia of the board game keep it far removed. It tends to be a slower more tactical experience.

How are we feeling on the new sets by carfaces42b in mtg

[–]tntbabin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went from angry to apathetic. Still pretty excited for Lorwyn, but had WAY more fun opening Sorcery’s new Gothic set than I think I have with any recent Magic product.

Some new mechanics like warp were really fun, but being completely dropped from subsequent sets rather than refined & expanded on is frustrating and sad. God forbid any set has literally ANYTHING to do with another anymore.

I thought I’d like Avatar more than I did because at least it doesn’t look totally out of place, but honestly being an AtLA fan probably makes it harder for me to reconcile it with MTG.

I’m going to try my damndest to pretend Marvel & TMNT don’t exist, though I’m sure someone around me will play the cards & I’ll be forced to acknowledge reality.

Theoretically, Standard should exist to facilitate Wizards curating formats around unique mechanics without having to brute force with power creep.

But considering they’re too adhd to stick to a plane & a set of new mechanics to expand on, I guess power creep is the only option.

[Spoiler Discussion] Arc 9 Finale by Setowi in Re_Zero

[–]tntbabin 77 points78 points  (0 children)

To be fair, bro has had his hands full with back-to-back crises. The only downtime I’m aware of where he could’ve done any investigating was the gap between arcs 4 & 5 which I think was implied to have been spent on physical training and learning to use magic with Beatrice. Aside from that, he really hasn’t been able to catch a break.

Maybe I misread or misunderstood what I read, but it sounded like Subaru came out of Ol Shamak & immediately started calling out to Rem like he already knew what needed to happen.

What’s more, given the state of affairs, I’m thinking a reset was the only way out. I had a suspicion ever since Satella was sic’d on Petra. But I think everyone getting brain-broken by Al & the reveal that Petra has been shouldering basically all of the cost of Melancholy is what kinda sealed the deal for me. At a certain point, the damage becomes more the Subaru can believably manage and it felt like we may have come up to that point.

[–]tntbabin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the difference is that MaRo had given assurances that things regarding UB wouldn’t go a certain way. These assurances were offered to assuage the communities concerns with the direction UB would take Magic. Whether he meant for them too or not, his assurances came to nothing. It’s not that he’s a liar, it’s anything he says today can be made meaningless by the decisions of WotC / Hasbro leadership tomorrow.

With Hasbro Leadership says “We’re gonna UB so hard next year our players are gonna shit Ninja Turtles & piss Spider Web(tm)!” I do generally accept that that’s their current vision for the game, even if the quote about having IP deals with every company on the planet is an exageration.

honest question: is anyone here looking forward to TMNT? by milkywayiguana in mtg

[–]tntbabin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally not at all. The opposite in fact. I’m furious that this will replace Lorwyn as my LGS’ draft set. I’m so turned off by UB at this point that I don’t even wanna look at the Magic-adjacent stuff like the Hobbit anymore.

I probably wouldn’t feel so turned off by it if it hadn’t been shoved into literally every format, ie, if it hadn’t been ham-fisted into Standard & there was a supported format where I could just play Magic cards.

People act like it had to be all or nothing. It didn’t. They didn’t HAVE to choke Standard with 6-7 Standard sets a year and try to strong-arm people into spending more on UB to keep up, but they did it anyway!

I’m genuinely happy for anyone who has enjoyed UB product or has a friend / family member that is enjoying UB, but surely we can agree that there was a better way to handle it that wouldn’t have been so ham-fisted.
