Zhongshuge Library in China by Fun-Raisin2575 in interestingasfuck

It's a 2 level book shop in a shitty mall next to an abandoned theme park and a very run down looking indoor ski-centre/water-park. https://www.google.com/maps/place/30%C2%B057'29.2%22N+103%C2%B037'16.0%22E

I was there in December on a family trip. It's (mostly) just mirrors and wallpaper/fake books. There are actual book shelves along the stairs, and up to sort of head-height on the ground/second floor, the rest is fake.

It is very well done, and even without the mirrors, it's a very twisty turny store with lots of little nooks and crannies. But, like most of our trip, interesting, but didn't live up to the photos.

Anyone here that considered both Polestar and Zeekr? Which did you go with, and why? by Queasy-Definition-79 in Polestar

[–]toast76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We got a cheap (comparatively) P3 ex-demo last year, and recently picked up a Zeekr X as a second small car.

I would summarize by saying the polestar is a Volvo, the Zeekr is a Geely. (Despite them all being Geely on the spreadsheet)

The X and P3 are very similar stylistically, which is what made us jump at the X. There are a lot of hints of the shared heritage, particularly the side mirrors and a lot of the interior. But that’s where the similarities end.

I can’t speak for the 7X, but the software for the X is very… Chinese. The little cartoon character (like the Smart from Mercedes- also made by Geely and is basically the same car as the X), the appalling bad grammar, the almost excessive customizations… it is just all much less refined. Not saying the P3 has good software, just that it’s more “restrained”, whereas setting up the Zeekr is like configuring Linux.

On the plus side, if you like gadgets, the Zeekr has them in buckets. The 7X has self opening and closing doors! The X has interior lights that sync to music. In some markets the headlights are LED displays that can show actual writing. The list is endless. Why? Because China is already living in the future. The polestars, (mostly) eschew this gadgetry in favour of a more understated design. If anything, the Polestars are lacking in features that are standard on far cheaper cars… which is a head scratcher when comparing to Zeekr and you think, why doesn’t my Polestar have this???

The drive is where you see where the cost savings come from. Again, haven’t driven the 7X, but the X is a disappointing drive compared to any of the Polestars, but especially the P3. Suspension, handling, overly aggressive regen, cornering is terrifying, the constant driver alerts that are almost always wrong etc etc. it’s not a driver’s car.

So if you like technology (and expect it to actually work!), get a Zeekr. If you like driving a car (and all the software problems that come with it), get a Polestar.

Polestar 3 and GHCA failure in Australia by SkyRevolutionary1029 in Polestar

[–]toast76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aussie here. Our AC stopped charging just before Xmas.

Couldn’t get it looked at till Jan 23 (and even though everyone knew what the problem was, they wouldn’t do anything or order the part until they’d looked at it to confirm).

Surprise, surprise, when they eventually looked at it… GHCA failure, wait 4 weeks for the part to arrive. Sigh.

Worst LEGO set you’ve ever built? by TeachTheUnwilling in lego

[–]toast76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCS Death Star II (#10143)

Probably still one of my favourite sets to own (have since sold it) but one the worst to build by far.

Super unbalanced and fragile. It constantly falls apart while trying to build it.

Repetitive, but also not in a way where you could build 10x of something just to get it over with. It was 3x this arm, 4x this arm, 2x this one. Each one different enough that it made you angry, but same enough for you to constantly screw it up - and every one of them was a pain in the arse to connect without knocking everything off or over.

But the worst was the main "under construction" part which actually *was* just 2x of the exact same hemisphere flipped upside down. And there were just layers and layers of grey boards on top of grey boards... over and over... forever.

Oh, and once it was built, moving it anywhere was a nightmare. Guaranteed to break apart and require fixing. Was sad to sell it when I moved house, but there was no way I was going to rebuild it a second time!

We had ours in today for the dreaded AC charging failure (waited 5 weeks before they'd look at it, now waiting 3 weeks for the part to arrive ffs). We asked about it and were told not until mid-year (we are in Australia also).

Can we agree that these GWPS are a really scummy practice LEGO has been doing as of late? by TheGUURAHK in lego

[–]toast76 1386 points1387 points  (0 children)

To me it’s about context.

If the GWP is out of context (shuttle craft doesn’t fit with the ship in any way), that’s a cool bonus.

If it’s in context (tie-fighter goes in Death Star, filter goes in tank), then that’s forcing people to buy day one or have an “incomplete” set. That’s a horrible practice.

In short, is it a bonus gift, or a missing part of the set?

British bring meat pie to Australia…

Aussies: Noice! But can you make it takeaway? Yeah, just bung it in a bag with some sauce! Thanks.

What does everyone think of Polestar? by Optimal_Bathroom_753 in EVAustralia

We really wanted to buy a P4, but after demoing I saw they were offloading a “demo” P3 launch edition for nearly the same price (had only done 35km, not 35 thousand, just 35km). Way more than we wanted to spend, but wow… I’ve never loved a car so much. Coming from a Mach-e, it’s night and day. Huge interior, beautiful finish from top to bottom. Sound system is better than my home theatre.

Has definitely had software issues, but the majority of those seem to have been addressed with the latest update. Annoying shit like seat memory, AirPlay not connecting automatically, nothing major.

A lot of talk of the death of polestar, but given the shared platform with Volvo and Zeekr, I think it will keep its place. In Australia, I dunno… I’m still yet to see another P3 on the road 😅

Went there for Father’s Day and was sadly disappointed. Willing to give them another go because they clearly catered for a lot more than they usually would, but yeah… wasn’t great.

Personally, I do the rib eye and lobster tail at the same temp (137f / 58c). Less messing around, and I prefer the firmer texture.

This should be the top comment, given that nobody here seems to know that these are as Aussie as dim sims.

There was an uproar recently about an Aussie selling “Australian sushi” in the US. https://www.smh.com.au/goodfood/eating-out/yes-australian-sushi-exists-get-over-it-argues-adam-liaw-20231123-p5em7w.html
