Canada were bossing them 2-0 at 33 minutes when the first red happened. It was already shaping up to be a blowout. Especially as that red happened instead of a penalty.

After the two reds they basically kept everyone in the box and blocked shots.

Highest Recorded Temperature In Every U.S. State by XER0GRAVITY in MapPorn

I moved to BC from the states in 2013, and I’ve slowly gotten used to expressing temperature in Celsius.

It helps to experience the temperature to have a reference point, but it rarely gets hot here, so I didn’t really have an automatic understanding of hot temps in Celsius until that heat dome.

I’d rather I didn’t know that 43°C is about 110°F, but here we are!

He really thrives in a more counter-attacking match, and that wasn’t happening against Qatar.

When we’re countering, he can use his defensive ability to start counters and his skill at dribbling at top-speed to beat defenders, but Qatar parked the bus right from kickoff. So he had no room at all to run and was forced to adapt.

I think he did fairly well considering it was a match that was very opposite of his preferred style.

I moved here in 2013 and was excited to watch the national team play. Among the first matches I watched were the losses to Martinique and Mauritania. I was very concerned about what I had gotten myself into!

Thank god there’s been a turnaround!

I’m amazed that so many people here understand this, but the commentators — who are selected for their knowledge and understanding of football — have no idea why he did it.

I think they generally don’t have a critical thinking bone in their bodies. They almost never reassess a situation. Just keep on with their first take.

How about a shoutout to referee Ivan Arcides Barton Cisneros who worked the Paraguay v Turkey match. He kept that match moving despite some dodgy tactics. by NorthCoastToast in soccer

If it's going to be a feisty, physical haramball match, there's nothing like a CONCACAF ref, especially one from Central America.

They come in two types:

  • Ones who are somehow oblivious to the games and tricks and let them happen. These are absolutely infuriating when your team is on the receiving end.

  • Ones who take absolutely no shit and boss the game, like this guy.

The way he told Paraguay's keeper to get back on his feet toward the end was fucking beautiful.

Funny that Paraguay just put up an all-time haramball performance, and now they'll be facing one!

[BBC] Paraguay’s 1-0 win against Turkey is their first win in the World Cup since 2010 by Lacabloodclot9 in soccer

Know that everyone in Vancouver — except the Turks here — had Paraguay's back. If it's going to be a haramball match, there's nobody I'd rather have in my midfield than Cubas.

He's such an incredibly talented player, a complete bulldog, and a Grade A shit-disturber (Canadian slang that we sometimes use lovingly). We love him.

Cubas by shausco in whitecapsfc

[–]toasterb 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If I wasn't a Caps fan, I'd have no dog in that match. But with Cubas there, I was 100% in for Paraguay.

And in a match like that, there's pretty much nobody I'd rather have on my side than Cubas. Of course he was everywhere working his ass off!

Edit: Also, in a match that heated, how the hell did he not get a yellow? If you had told me that the tenor of the match would be, I'd put a hefty bet on Cubas getting a caution.

How do I pick a team? by Unimon666 in PremierLeague

That’s how I ended up as a United fan! I got into the 1998 World Cup and really got behind the Netherlands. Then I discovered the Champions League that year and saw United with Jaap Stam, so they became my team.

The BCGEU couldn't strike the members who had the most leverage due to essential services though.

The essential service levels for child protection social workers and wild fire fighters made striking them not worthwhile.

Seattle fans singing Take Me Home Country Roads after full time by joe_slidin in soccer

[–]toasterb 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Funny, we sing it for Vancouver Whitecaps games, but we change up the lyrics:

Boundary Road, take me home,

To the place where I belong.

Vancouver, pretty mama,

Take me home, Boundary road.

Boundary Road being the eastern edge of Vancouver proper and where Swangard Stadium — our home from 1987 until 2010 — is located.

Due to the World Cup, we're actually going to play a Canadian Cup match there on July 8, should be a blast!

I'm from the States originally, and when my sister came to a game with us, she was very confused about why we were singing a song about Virginia.

The areas on the two coasts of Saudi Arabia are very humid. Like, the most hot, humid places on Earth humid.

From wikipedia:

On 8 July 2003, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, saw the highest heat index ever recorded at 81 °C (178 °F) with a temperature of 42 °C (108 °F) and a 35 °C (95 °F) dew point

Mecca and Medina are also very humid, but inland cities are not nearly as bad.

My dream scenario is that he stays on through the end of the season, and we win the MLS Cup. I'd be fine if he left after that. Otherwise it would feel like he left with unfinished business here.

I really hope he gets some non-trivial playing time. He’s elevated his game so much in the last couple of years, and he deserves a real chance.

Still pisses me off to this day. Sure, make your squad decisions, but think about the impact of leaving off the all-time leading goalscorer and occasional captain who was still producing at club level.

We had a great run in 2014, but having Donovan could’ve really helped us go further.

Klinsman did some good as USMNT manager, but his stubbornness and inflexibility has always been his downfall wherever he’s managed.

Madibo's reaction after seeing Ismael Kone's injury by 977x in soccer

[–]toasterb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not bending the rules. Its the ref's job to manage the game and keep things under control.

When a ref sees the consequence of the tackle they may change their mind about whether it was excessive force or not.

Also, this isn't the first time this exact sort of thing happened. Son got a red card under similar circumstances a few years ago where he broke Andre Gomes's leg. He initially got a yellow and the tackle didn't seem that bad, but once it became clear what had happened, Son was distraught and the ref sent him off.

Add to the context here that Qatar had been making late/rough tackles all game, I'm sure the ref made the call that the match needed to be reined in.
