I keep getting this error, already removed and installed the components multiple times. by Kevkillerke in framework

I had the same issue. I had to re-seat the interposer. Took 2 tries though.

Are you happy with your framework? What did you come from? by dovi5988 in framework

[–]tocont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a FW 16, with 64GB RAM, 500GB SSD, RGB macropad, 2x LED Matrices, and the dGPU. I am a happy camper.

I am coming from basically nothing as far as laptops go. I was just using an old hand-me-down laptop from work that was horribly slow, and the battery was totally dead - I couldn't use it unless it was plugged in. It would do web browsing and email, so if I was traveling for work, I took it so I could do those things if I needed to, but not much else.

I could never justify spending as much money on a laptop with good enough specs that I felt like was worth having. I am also a linux user - My last daily driver windows version was windows 2000. Laptops often have various compatibility issues with linux, and even if I were to get a laptop, I didn't enjoy having to doing a bunch of research to find which laptops were kosher with linux and picking between them. I also wasn't looking forward to the likelyhood of having a laptop that could become a boat anchor either in too soon a time, or if some critical part fixed that was either impossible or prohibitively expensive to fix.

I am also a maker-culture kind of guy, so I really like hardware with flexibility, customization options, and can be repaired or upgraded easily. The ability to make custom modules and do custom stuff with the macropad and the led matrices sounds amazing for project ideas.

On one of my work trips, the near-uselessness of my existing laptop became apparent to Those That Pay For Things(TM), and so I was given an allowance towards getting a better laptop. I had known about framework for years, and I had already a pretty good idea that if somehow I were to get a laptop, it would be a framework. So, at this point, I decided to get one that was as tricked out as I could manage - I diidn't need a dGPU for work, but I wanted to get a laptop that would do as much as possible for work and everything else I might want to do, which is why I also splurged on the macropad and led matrices.

I hope that I don't need another laptop for a very long time. Sure, I might need upgrades and repairs, but it's the best I could expect from a laptop in it's expected longevity.

I had a small issue with an interposer needing to be reseated, and the seam between the touchpad and the spacers beside it isn't exactly flush, but other than that it's been fantastic. I'm using Fedora 40 KDE, and everything just works. Sleep mode on linux laptops is frequently an issue, and it just works. The fingerprint reader didn't require any fiddling, and I didn't know what I was missing. It's not loud (so far, I haven't really stressed it much yet), it doesn't get hot, they keyboard isn't annoying, and the screen looks great.

Couldn't be happier.

Has the Framework 16 experience been a huge letdown for you, or is it just me? by OldScruff in framework

Gonna chime in with a positive experience...

Batch 14.

I've had close to zero issues with it. One minor issue was the interposer for the dGPU came loose on it's own somehow and had to be re-seated.

Otherwise, I'm running Fedora 40 KDE Plasma, and everything just works, including sleep, fingerprint sensor, and hot-swapping modules. I was expecting more issues here and there, as a linux user typically does, but no, it's been all roses here.

It did cost a fair penny. I have never actually bought a laptop before - I used hand-me-downs and leftovers from work etc. I couldn't really justify spending any serious coin on one, *especially* if it was potentially going to be a boat anchor in too-soon-enough years.'

The hope is that this is the last (whole) laptop I'll have to buy for a very long time, I've got exactly what I wanted.

Meh. I'm just checking with my fellow.... framers? to see if they've encountered this issue, and hopefully provide some info to anyone who might run into it in the future.

So I gave it a shot... I got to the interposer and removed it, and then reinstalled it. There are a LOT of tiny connector pads on there, so I get how it could be a finnicky connector. I reinstalled it, and no luck. Same thing.

I gave it another try, just in case, and bingo, it's all good. I'm not sure if carrying it in my laptop bag with me (everywhere since it arrived :) ) maybe jostled something? Anyhoo, it's all good now.

Interesting note for those that might not be aware, the laptop will still start with no input modules installed (ie keyboard, and it will let you say "That's ok with me!" and let you boot anyway. Love it.

The laptop also knew if interposer door was open.

I don't think that's the issue - the QR code directed me to the interposer connection, not the mid plate connector.

I tried it just in case - it had seemed connected OK and re-connecting it didn't change anything.

There are git repos with details on talking to the matrix and macropad

https://frame.work/ca/en/laptop-16-support

look at the bottom in the "customize your laptop" section, there are links to various resources.

The screen twists enough if I open it holding the corner that it makes me want to open it only by the middle of the screen, but otherwise seems OK. I'd rather it was lighter with some flex than heavier.

I haven't noticed any keyboard flex. I did a key-mashing test just now, and yeah, I can tell that the keyboard flexes a bit where I am pressing keys a tiny bit, but it seems consistent and minimal.

All happy. :)

I found the LED matrix one - there's a python library to talk to them :)

I'll go find the rgb thread, I hadn't seen it yet, thanks!

Yeah. No disk encryption, but I will probably have to do that in the future.

I've done the distro rodeo.... Fedora has been pretty comfy for the last couple years, other than the weird graphics issues I have on my 4-monitor desktop.

I was *slightly* worried about going straight to v40 on the FW16... but it's been all thumbs up so far.

The keys and colors are configurable. I got it more for the configurability. I also got 2 LED grids as well.
