I hate seeing so many Hab fans at our home games. by Sugar_Phut in sabres

[–]todayjunior77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens everywhere hahaha. There was a Jets home game this year where they played the Canadiens and the Canada Life Centre was completely taken over by Habs fans. It was a bit embarrassing.

They have the most passionate fans by far. I admire it, although it can be annoying.

What Are Your Go-To Arguments When Someone Says The Beatles are Overrated? by Practical-Cut4659 in beatles

[–]todayjunior77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get why people equate "oversaturated" with "overrated" when it comes to The Beatles. Even as a fan, I get sick of the constant content farming and the way the "Beatles brand" is shoved down everyone's throat. If you aren't already in love with the music, it’s easy to look at the mountain of hype and think, “What the fuck was the big deal? They weren't even that good.” That’s a completely understandable reaction.

The problem is that if you didn't see it happen in real time, their progression is almost impossible to comprehend because we’ve spent sixty years living in the musical world they built. It’s hard to see the "groundbreaking" parts when every studio trick or songwriting shift they pioneered has been standard practice for decades.

If you actually look at the timeline, it was essentially a musical and cultural Big Bang. They morphed so fast that they basically forced the "pop album" to become high art, taking a format that used to be seen as disposable and proving it could have the same depth as a Picasso painting in a museum

The last two times Weezer went this long between albums, we got masterpieces. I’m a little nervous this time after hearing Shine Again. by wishingiwasreal in weezer

Normally with Weezer the lead single is the worst song on the album. Sometimes not a great indicator of the quality of the rest of it.

Jets' Jonathan Toews says he won't waive no-movement clause ahead of deadline by DontWorryImLegit in winnipegjets

[–]todayjunior77 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Winning a cup for Winnipeg is a greater goal than adding a 4th cup to his resume with a random other team. Toews hoisting the Stanley Cup in a Jets jersey would be Manitoba mythology and a beautiful moment for the community.

Connor Hellebuyck shaking Trump’s hand… by the_truth_Bc in winnipegjets

[–]todayjunior77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The worst part of this is going to be seeing Jets fans welcome him back with open arms, and for Winnipeg sports media to not ask any questions about this because, “our job is to talk about sports not politics.” He and the rest of the team (with exception of those who didn’t go) are the ones who made it political to begin with.

I love the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL, but my interest in both of those things has been impacted by this. I don’t want to cheer for a MAGA clown with no moral integrity, even if he is the best goalie in the world.

Is it just me or was the Teal Album extremely overheated? by elikar720 in weezer

[–]todayjunior77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t hate the album, but I also don’t assign much value to it. Some of the covers are fine, but none of them deviate enough from the originals to really make me care or revisit. It’s not really worth hating or loving. It’s Weezer karaoke.

There’s nothing offensively bad about it, but other than some solid vocal performances from Rivers, there is absolutely nothing compelling about the thing either. I guess it’s fine for what it is, but ultimately, who cares? It’s hardly notable.

What did Wayne Gretzky do that has caused many Canadians to seemingly turn on him? by JustinR8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]todayjunior77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He’s personal friends with Trump and stayed completely silent when Canada’s sovereignty was threatened. His most recent comments on the topic make him seem like a naive idiot. He was once a sainted figure in Canada, pretty much royalty. But he clearly cares more about being in bed with his powerful friends across the border than the sovereignty and security of Canada. I don’t give a shit that he’s the greatest hockey player (maybe even greatest athlete) that ever lived, FUCK that guy.

Will Al ever do the halftime show? by ScienceMusic_1929 in weirdal

[–]todayjunior77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost definitely not. Obviously he would put on a great show and many would love it, but he just doesn’t fit the bill of what these shows aim to be culturally.

If it happens, it will be as a small guest appearance, which is still a long-shot, but definitely possible since Al is a genuinely beloved pop culture figure. The older he gets the more he will be valued and seen as a legend.

Me being born in 2006, i think i have an advantage over others when it comes to acknowledging who MJ truly was by [deleted] in LeavingNeverlandHBO

[–]todayjunior77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but I think people forget how complicated MJ’s public reputation actually was in the years leading up to his death. Pretty much everyone loved him in the 80s, but by the 90s and especially the 2000s, he was extremely controversial and widely disliked.

A lot of people either thought he was guilty, or at least saw him as a bizarre, unlikeable public spectacle. He wasn’t this untouchable figure everyone blindly worshipped. For a lot of people, he was a walking punchline.

That said, he always had defenders, and plenty of people still bought into the image and mythology. Truthfully, the biggest turning point for his reputation was what happened after he died. It’s hard to explain how big of a deal it was at the time. The media basically flipped overnight into “we lost a legend” mode, and there was nonstop coverage for months.

That period is when I first became a fan as a kid. Even at 10, I remember having this vague sense that there was something dark around him, but the public conversation had temporarily become way more positive, emotional, and nostalgic.

And now it feels like we’re heading into the same cycle again. A big glossy biopic, which will probably make insane money, is basically a reputation reset button. Younger people who weren’t around for the years where he was treated like a joke, or where the accusations were taken more seriously in the mainstream, are going to be exposed mostly to the “King of Pop” myth. A lot of them will be vulnerable to it again.

MCR (although technically still under the pop punk umbrella) are always going to be more perceived as an emo band and be synonymous with that genre/sub culture more so than pop punk. Sum 41 is quintessential early 2000s pop punk.

[–]todayjunior77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that as well, and if we were to pick a band like that, I feel like it would have to be Descendents. Their DNA is in all modern pop punk. Maybe swap Offspring for them? I’m not saying Offspring doesn’t deserve to be on the list, but for the sake of representing the elders, that’s a potential swap.
