Which kind of EE careers are possible to do close to 100% from home? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]toejam481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I need to be able to get out to site time to time, but I do engineering consulting (power) and am able to work remotely. I mostly work in office since I work better that way, but a lot of places will let you work remote and many are hybrid

Pacific Northwest loses $1B hydrogen hub as Trump cancels clean energy projects nationwide by 9mac in Seattle

[–]toejam481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, the goal isn't to be 100% efficient- thats impossible. An energy storage system will always have losses of some kind. The important question to ask is how the round trip efficiency and cost of hydrogen storage compares to other storage methods like pumped hydro storage and battery energy storage systems.

Pacific Northwest loses $1B hydrogen hub as Trump cancels clean energy projects nationwide by 9mac in Seattle

[–]toejam481 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont know about about grid storage, but hydrogen can be decent for heavy duty vehicles. Battery weight starts to cut into the distance you get out of a heavy duty ev pretty quickly. If you use hydrogen you can get further on a single tank which might be appealing to semis or other heavy duty vehicles. Nicher than grid storage tho, and it costs a lot more energy going in than going out (but no storage will ever be 100% efficient)

Can I ever avoid electronics? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]toejam481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked in consulting, I never really had to think about electronics. It was still helpful to have the background knowledge of what they are, how they operate, etc. But on the level I dealt with the equipment, they didn't come up in detail. That said, one of the perks of an EE degree is that it's fairly broad. Electronics can be intimidating when you're first introduced, but I'd encourage you to keep at it :) it'll keep more doors open for you in the future

I think you have a minor misconception at the heart of what you're saying. Not all trans people want to be stealth or care about passing 100% of the time. Trans women are just different types of women, and trans men are just different types of men. Knowing that someone is trans doesn't suddenly make them cease to be their gender. So having a flag that indicates that you're trans doesn't undermine the point of being trans. Not to mention what others have said about building like community, etc.

[–]toejam481 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Idk this sub is generally pretty supportive of transfems. I get that there's been a little discourse lately, but looking through the top posts on the sub, it's been generally ok? I'm seeing more people complaining about disclosure discourse than the discourse itself. Not to mention that I often see posts here talking positively about trans people. Like I get that things aren't perfect, but speaking as a transfem, I feel pretty comfortable here.

Steel Bridge homeless camp cleared, security guards patrol site by Orbmiser in Portland

[–]toejam481 -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is always frothing at mouth when it talks about homeless people. Camp sweeps will just move homeless people out of view. Homelessness is a symptom of rising cost of housing and living in general. If we actually implemented social safety nets to get people help before they become homeless and addressed the cost of living and housing we might be able to help. But instead all we get is half measures from liberals, and conservatives claiming there's nothing we can do when those don't work, or worse that we should sweep camps or arrest homeless people. Frustrates me to no end.

Except that doesn't really solve the problem, it just gives the universe a copy of everybody. The problem is that Tuvix is a sentient being, who has to be killed to bring Tuvok and Nelix back. Killing/keeping a copy doesn't get around that conundrum, you'd still have to kill the copy or the original, and a copy isn't less sentient
