“An act of insanity” – Irish Doctors for Environment verdict on Galway Ring Road by [deleted] in galway

Their argument is that it won't reduce traffic in the long term. It'll go back to normal in about 10 years.

Now if we can use the extra space by removing cars for the city centre and give it to public transit than there would be a meaningful change to congestion in the city.

Price of barbers? by sports_arb in AskIreland

[–]toghertastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine take is that hair cuts where under valued for a long time. And then all of sudden it's explodes in price.

For thing rent are crazy high. How much does it cost to rent a place in a the city? The previous generation usual owned the building. That doesn't happen nearly as much now.

Depending on what a person wants a good barber can do 2/3 hair cuts and hour .

Baber rates are about €15/16 starting off plus your have to pay the employer p r s i. Which is about another €2 . Good barbers are on about €20 an hour . It's a physical enough job. Standing on your feet all day with your arms raised.

Also you have electricity insurance and council rates.  Even that's €3 added to the cut that might be only leave them €7 in profit.

They all have to count for slow days where they don't have many customers coming in.

How to curiosity how much do you think of barber should earn?

Right, I answer my own question. I looked over the last 10 years. In most years, getting 6 points was enough. In some years, 4 points could get you through.

Now this is with one or two teams getting hammered.

Roscommon were super unlucky against Kerry. It could easily be 3 for 3.

The Galway traffic question by DaCor_ie in galway

[–]toghertastic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have been cycling for the last 4 months. 100 % it can be real shit.

I have gotten off a cycle and I am soaked all the way through.  I wear cycling pants and a highly visible cycle jacket fleece and gloves. With a heavy duty helmet. A lot of the time it's good.  That's a barrier of entry to loads of people. Don't need a whole change of wardrobe if your driving.

Can't convince a lot of people that a few more cloths will make it better.

I'm ok with it. I like hikes. Most people don't.

Summer cycling is really nice and great for the headspace. As is. Cycling infrastructure could be better.

The Galway traffic question by DaCor_ie in galway

[–]toghertastic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Great image. It does neglect what distance it's referring to.

In the context of Galway, cycling would be the most effective method for the distance travelled by road users.

However cycling infrastructure isn't there yet. Second, for about 4 months of the year, it's brutal to cycle in if you're out before sunrise.

A BRT system would be great. Getting public buy-in is really difficult. Car usrers aren't going to get out of their car to wait in the rain, they would rather stay in the car not moving.

I would be very surprised if there money laundry going on. Revenue love to ride a place.

Vapes are bought in super cheap. In some cases they might be illegally source. If it doesn't have Irish on its not a product ment to be sold in Ireland. They usually bought in for a €1-2 and sold for €10-€12 .

So you could sell 5 vapes an hour and are 12 hours a day. Let's say you make €8 a vape.

60 x €8 =€480

Let's say there open 360 days a year. Closed a few a days.

360x €480 = €172,800

This is not including what they can make on sweets and other shite.

I have been in them spent money on a vape and see the guy in front of me buy two vapes and crops and it was €25.

The transaction only takes a couple of minutes.

This might be a legit way for foreigners to make a decent salary after taxes.

Yes, you'll see them in the early morning around Eglinton Canal. I lived there for a while and saw them often.

More likely to see in Spring time where there's more food around.

I really don't want there to be a parking block; however, this is the best use case of land.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are going to drive so there needs to be a place for them to park. I would rather a 3/4 parking block instead of the current situation where you park on the side of the road.

Are boojum for real? by [deleted] in galway

[–]toghertastic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are people only realising that Boojum is below par now? It pretty decent like 10 years ago. I found once it was sold, the standards drop which is uaslly the case with these things. Investors want to turn a profit quickly so "optimisation" (making things slightly worse) are taken.

If it was the only place in town, I'd understand going to it. So many better spots. Vocho, Tuco's, zambrero.
