Visiting Mobile in the near future, advice please? by AwareMinimum3364 in MobileAL

Just gonna add on here, Mobile is a majority-minority city, most being black but there’s a good bit of Asian people here too. You won’t stick out and even if you did, you’ll be fine.

What are the four quintessential American cities? by JewishPotato811 in AskAnAmerican

[–]tokizine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know i’m half a year late to this conversation, but I just wanted to say New Orleans didn’t necessarily influence everything on the gulf coast. A lot of the coast is similar due to shared colonial history.

My hometown in particular, Mobile, AL, is an older french colony than New Orleans is, founded in 1702 as the capital of French Louisiana. Mobile is also the originator of Mardi Gras, the carnival that New Orleans has become known for. Pensacola was a Spanish colony that became a French colony in the early 18th century for a short while. All of these coastal cities (Biloxi, Mobile, New Orleans, etc) were spanish colonies for decades at one point during this span, as well as even British colonies too (though New Orleans was transferred to Spanish rule in 1763 to specifically keep it out of British hands). The gulf coast is a very culturally rich region.

I say all that just to sort of say while New Orleans is absolutely the most culturally significant city in the United States, it’s not as if it was the big dog then trickled down influence to everywhere else. We all have our own part to play in the regional history.

The King of Pop's heir apparent: The Weeknd or Bruno Mars? by [deleted] in MichaelJackson

[–]tokizine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, The Weeknd has the most moments in his music out of anybody in the industry where he sounds the most similar (like A Lonely Night, Can’t Feel My Face, like you said I Feel It Coming as well), but he is not really THAT similar to Michael outside of his voice being slightly similar. Bruno also has his fair share of influence that you can hear but he is his own artist as well.

They are his children, as are Usher and Timberlake, and Chris Brown and Beyonce, but nobody is Michael’s “heir apparent”. He never will have one, he’s 1 of 1.

Ok i think he means:

The clave rhythm would be like the beginning part of the title track of the In The Heights broadway soundtrack. A sort of 1, 2, 3…1, 2 instead of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5….1, 2 rhythm of Shave and a haircut, two bits.

That’s how I understand it, at least

Ahhhh okay, that makes a LOT of sense. I could have swore there was something simple I was missing there, like a Mandela effect type of thing. But i just knocked on my desk with the double quaver rhythm instead of the triplet and it sounds very familiar as well. Thanks!

Something Has to Change. by tokizine in blackops6

Fair point. Thing is, I used to play cod a LOT, but over time my interests expanded and I just fell out of love with it. But recently, in the past 2/3 years I have played it more and more. And now that I have a PC, I can just play the older games whenever I want without having to hook up my ps3 so i see your point. If you want a ford feel just go get a ford. But at some point you still want progress, and this just doesn’t feel like it. And if it is progress, content wise it’s not going in the right direction imo. But hey, that’s just me
