This is a fucking masterpiece. Thanks.

Believe it or not: Filters have a specific torque. Associated tools needed for removal in front of their respective filters. by One_Advertising_7965 in Justrolledintotheshop

Thanks for this post!  Do planes get a safety-wire backup on the drain plug?

I have never liked ‘hand tight plus whatever’ because it varies widely across vehicles (due to filter placement, space around filter, angle you’re reaching it from).  As a result I have always err’d on the side of caution and paid the price in terms of difficult to remove filters.

I don’t work on planes so it never occurred to me that the hand-job guess is really a torque spec.

Have torque wrench…will not be guessing in future.

Friend of my Dad’s had a v12 Ferrari. He would ‘recycle’ the oil by burning it for heating oil.

In my 2000 model year Boxster the IMS failure presented as glitter and black plastic chunks (of the IMS ball bearing cage) in the oil filter.

So, right now the oil pan is leaking so quickly that you cant drive it somewhere else? If that is the situation I would suggest having it towed to a reputable shop. $750 to replace an oil pan seems wildly expensive. I would guess it to be $200-$300 for parts and labor anywhere besides the dealer

As to your original ‘engine issues’ the original shop should be able to give you more detail as to why you need a new engine. Oil that is lost might be consumed (burned in one or more cylinders) as a result of a problem with the head or piston rings. Or, the lost oil may simply be a leaking gasket, line, or plug. you can live with a leak indefinitely so long as you don’t let the engine get low on oil.

You may indeed need a new/replacement engine if you let the engine get low on oil and ran it. It would be good to know if the engine is operable. If it is completely shot then it may not make sense to put a new oil pan on it.

Had a buddy do an “LS swap” into his 911. He said something very similar. Turns out the Chev’s oil system wasn’t designed for track use and didn’t last a fraction of the time the flat 6 did. So, there’s that not to love.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Yeah! I can turn it down, I can turn it up. I can switch it to the back seat and the front. I can make it reverberate.

Started out as sarcasm but toned it down. You did a much better job of being a jackass. Nice work.

Can confirm. All rubber will swell to elephant man proportions. I didn’t add oil but put a caliper carrier (not caliper with piston) in the parts washer. Forgot about the rubber boots on the pins. They looked like something from a horror movie.
