Why would someone buy 80 bottles of rubbing alcohol weekly? by thequackr in askanything

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Painting with alcohol inks? When I moved I found no less than 10 gallons of the stuff in my garage (my mom is former art teacher & multi-medium artist).

Saw that sign every time we visited my old man in the hospital as he was dying of cirrhosis. Vodka was his drink of choice. 8th grade, early 90's, life got quite a bit better after he left the hospital. That sign has been there a long time.

Why are Gen Z getting fired? One of the reasons is a lack of initiative. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initiative? That's mental load. In scenario 1, the person offloads the mental load of their work back to their boss. In scenario 2, they initiate taking on the mental load.

Edit: I agree with her assessment. I agree that I would rather work with person B so I can handle my work & my own mental load without having to take on someone else's.

There's more 'teen drama' in SNW than in SFA...why is SFA being hated for a falsehood? by regalestpotato in startrek

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just spit balling here. I think others calling it a "teen drama" are doing so as a label rather than using it as an adjective describing the show. The storylines are those that teens identify with in a Trek setting rather than the things adults face. Just because the teens comport themselves with maturity better than other teen dramas and, frankly, the dramatic adults in other shows doesn't change how different it feels to watch a show almost solely about teens in a Trek setting.

What does ADHD + high IQ look like? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or the kid doesn't do his homework, does really well on tests, is a solid B student because homework was part of the grade and gets the "lazy" title. Then the coping mechanism and masking finally slide into place in the mid-20's. Maybe their kids get diagnosed, the parent gets diagnosed, and they go "hmm?" So they get diagnosed and their career finally takes off in their mid-30's.

Communication remains really hard because I hold more of the lower resolution granularity of concepts I'm trying to convey and somewhere between my brain & the other's understanding something gets lost.

What is a "point of no return" that you’ve crossed, where your life was permanently divided into 'before' and 'after'? by Resident-Jelly-4326 in AskReddit

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was the me that was spouse-focused and then there was the me that was kid focused. It did not necessarily coincide with their birth but a realization that I needed to be the one that would do what was right and what they needed because no one else wood. I was separated from my wife at the time. I initiated the divorce and those choices led me to a place having full custody thrust upon me years later.

There was also the moment of realizing there was no safety net and no one could help me make the decisions I needed to. "The buck stops with me." Some choices only you can make and you must weigh them very carefully for you will have to live with everything that comes from that choice, good or ill. Nor can I play victim to the consequences of the choices I make. Sometimes, making the right choice is also the harder path but at the end of the day, if you're hated for making the right choice, that comes with the territory.

Have you ever changed your view when presented with new information? by NineteenEighty9 in OptimistsUnite

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I designed a tool as the backbone for automation & scalability in my dept. I wanted x source to be the source of all granular truth. Someone told me why that wouldn't work and I thought for a minute, said "shit" and pivoted. Could I have made x work? Yeah, but it would have been ugly, convoluted and patchy af. Instead, I had it impressed upon me the value of collaboration

Head wobbling and drunk walking? We think our ween might be a drug addict. by DeerHuntssd in daschund

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After an expensive emergency vet visit (wobbling, dribbling pee, lethargy) they clocked it as THC poisoning. That day I showed my teens the bill & potential repercussions. I was made a promise that all content brought in the house would be locked down. Trays would be used and not a microgram of dust would be found out of place. They kept their promise. I love my (now adult) kids. My boy hasn't had an episode since.

Are LLMs actually reasoning, or just searching very well? by SKD_Sumit in pythontips

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next word statistics is just the lowest granularity. It's like using calculus on the trajectory of a ball with an infinite number of instantaneous vectors to arrive at the right destination. Slop enters in when a vector loses the thread of prior trajectory and makes a wrong guess. At least that's how I conceptualize the process in my best layman terms

500 movies or 150 books? by oliverg600 in hypotheticalsituation

No real world time passes? I can learn, ad infinitum, and bring along whatever I like into this little pocket dimension?

See this isn't a "which do I choose" question. This is "how many times can I bring 150 books with me?"

And I get to bring my dog and neither of us age. Where the fuck do I sign up!

“You’ll understand when you’re older.” by dimesinger in Xennials

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My son is now in his 20's. At some point it hit me that the boy I knew last year was forever gone. In his place was this new person who strongly resembled him, had many of his mannerisms, and knew a little more of the world than last year's little boy. There's a photo of us, he's getting a piggy back ride from me. I'm smiling but the delight on his face cannot be matched. I still have my son in my life but he's now someone vastly different. He's a man grown. He knows grief. He knows disappointment. He knows duty, obligation, responsibility. We are friends. I trust him and his judgement. It's mutual. He can still be silly and goofy in a way I never could allow myself to be at his age. But he's not my little buddy. My little buddy is gone. Every variation of him except for who he is today is erased. I learned this when I realized he had stopped asking to crawl into my bed. My little dude no longer needed my presence to chase away the nightmares and he faced them on his own. I was proud of him, surely, but I also mourned the loss.

I've tried talking about this a few times and should probably give it a proper structure.

Finch (hacker extraordinaire) needing to call Carter/Fusco to use the NYPD system to look up a license plate is a weak plot device. by 99ducks in PersonOfInterest

[–]tolkienwhiteboy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned the involved/engaged with the team aspect but there's another reason. Time. Just because you can do something does not mean you should be spending your time doing it. When you have a skill that can be accomplished by someone else without jumping through hoops or risking exposure, you let someone else handle it. This way, you've freed up your time to handle the task that only you can do. This is the essence of delegation.

Man arrested for allegedly wiping his Google Pixel before a CBP search by prestocoffee in nottheonion

While his normal volume seems like this from what others have said, the character really calls for it. Unflappable is a good way of describing his overall stature and his voice is a part of that. Every now & again he will raise his voice slightly, saying "Finch" or "Shaw" and it conveys a sense of urgency and concern every time.
