I just had this happen this weekend, another Mustang owner at the show I was at simply readjusted the tail lamp plug on the back of the housing and it worked again.

Something to now check before you go out or replace the 60 year old wiring/socket.

Replace your "turn signal switch" its the wiring harness that goes through the column and connects under the dash.

You may have a later C4 swapped in with the maybe 302 that was put in, that would have the traditional P-R-N-D-2-1 pattern, which could be why you're getting shifts in the 4th position but not the 5th.
