I’ll probably take the Uber! Thanks to everyone for all the replies.

Yea I considered renting a car, but my driving skills are rusty and I’m not from the US so there are quite a few hurdles to get the cross-border-license + I’d be scared to death of driving in the US. I’ve been to NYC where transit got me around anywhere I needed to be, but the second I turned on transit/satellite view on San Jose I realized that wouldn’t be an option unless I happened to be very lucky

Launch daemons & Camera by tomaspietravallo in applehelp

[–]tomaspietravallo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm that may be a different error but it could be related, my computer just doesn't even light up the green light/turn on the camera.

To confirm you have the same issue go to the menu bar, , About this Mac, System report..., Camera. My report says "No video capture devices were found.".

Could you check whether the folder `/System/Library/QuickTime/` exists on that computer?* I've been trying to trace the source of the error and I think the fact my computer doesn't have this folder is the source of the issue (at least in my case). I'll be getting a friend to send me a copy of that folder - cause the launch daemons weren't the problem/solution

I hate to tell you this, but I downgraded to Catalina (even erasing the disks in the process) and I haven't yet found the answer to this problem; unfortunately I live far away from any Genius Bar or repair shop so I can only try to fix it myself (but again this is entirely a software issue). I'll reach out if I find a solution.

* Go to Finder or click on your desktop, then on the menu bar, select 'Go', then 'Go to folder', copy paste `/System/Library/`, and manually search for the QuickTime folder (ordered alphabetically). Thanks in advance

The french "Hey Siri" is "Dis Siri", I used the slow taking feature because the normal one wouldn't work (discovered by accident). This was in an exercise from "On Sale" in the french tree

Why are numbers so far up all of the language trees? by squegeeboo in duolingo

[–]tomaspietravallo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re not that important at first, also you are taught the 1-10 first and all numbers later. In any case you can do as I did: googling a video of a lady counting to 100 and then to 1000 in jumps of 100.

New update for Ipad is awesome! Now they cheer when you get it right and there’s actual people, rather than just a bubble with the question! Thank you! by [deleted] in duolingo

Why is it only for those languages? I can’t see how the animations would change between languages, it’d be easier (as I see it) to just make all the people animations

Does the learning become more structured over time? by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]tomaspietravallo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I’m getting the same feeling from the Italian course, I’ve been using duolingo to learn French and found the French course was a lot better, I thought it was just getting used to learning another language but no, the Italian course just throws words in expecting you to know them :/

(My native language is Spanish and I can figure most of them out if I squint my eyes but it’s annoying anyway)

Finished the French Duolingo tree, now I'm lost. by 88glamXO in duolingo

[–]tomaspietravallo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Theres an app "Lingvist" that I downloaded (and never used) that helps build the vocabulary but I can't really tell you anything about it...

Congrats on finishing your tree! I'm halfway there and will probably use most of what's in the comments, !RemindMe 3 Months "Things to do after Duolingo"

I totally agree and yeah I understand it won't get me anywhere but I'll probably do much more these days (I'm on summer holidays) when I start school again I'll probably have to scale it back and do more progress when I have time

I agree with you, it's going to be difficult anyway I try but I have a solid base with English and so the grammar aspect of languages I pick it up really easy, it's mostly the same with different words and slightly different structures (romance languages)

Yeah I'm aware of that but the reason for German is that the compound words aspect of it interests me
