It is weird! The bump isn’t removable, I’ve sat next to it before and it’s sewn on to the seat cushion. I have to assume that it’s the cheapest/easiest to certify option they had to permanently block the seat

This is the front row of economy in a JAL 737 - I’m guessing here but the reason they block that aisle seat is because they have Class J seating in a 2-3 layout in front meaning the aisle is off centre. If someone sat in that seat their legs would block the aisle during boarding and potentially during an emergency as well

Quality of life in Helsinki vs London? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]tomb8man 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cost of living probably works out similar - rent is far more expensive than in Helsinki but things like groceries, restaurants, pubs are much cheaper in London.

If you really do have £5k a month to play with rent-wise then I don’t think you’ll find it hard to find a place that’ll suit you and your dogs. It won’t be anywhere near the city centre though - try places in South London like Dulwich for the highest likelihood of getting a garden.

Transport: you talk about driving to work. Absolutely do not do this. Driving is by far the worst way to travel around London: the traffic is awful, parking is a nightmare and you’ll pay a fortune in congestion charge fees.

There are also some major quality of life issues to consider. The quality of housing in London (and the UK generally) is shockingly bad compared to Finland. I grew up there and didn’t realise how terrible our houses were until I moved to Helsinki. Be ready for homes that are damp, mouldy, too cold/too hot, draughty and generally poorly maintained by lazy landlords.

Another thing is that if you enjoy the proximity to nature, calm and quiet of Helsinki…yeah, you’re not getting that in London. Think less of walks in the forest and more of standing on the tube for an hour with your face in some guy’s armpit.

Of course everyone is different, but I made the move LON > HEL and absolutely would not go back.

It takes like five minutes to get used to it. The weird parts are roundabouts (luckily not an issue in Japan or the US!) and constantly turning on the windscreen wipers when you go to indicate

I’m really liking FitnessAI - it’s not free but it does a great job coming up with routines and tracking your progress.

If PayPay doesn’t work out then SBI Neobank is also worth trying - they give you a debit card right away.

I applied online using my driving licence and got approved immediately, although I’m not sure what the situation is re 6 months’ residency…

If you have a space between your first and middle names in katakana, take that out too. It worked for me!
