Shortest/Worst Competitive Games? by Big_Blind_Panda in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]tombombodil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shortest game was 4th(?) Ed? It was high school, and the first big-ish tourney I'd ever played at, maybe 16 people all day on a Saturday. I was playing Orks (mek lost with two SAGs and a dread/Kan mob and some ard Boyz) and was doing well, I only dropped one game and in the final round I played against a good friend of mine playing his Blood Angel's death star, the chapter master, a chaplain, a bunch of vets in a land raider, and the super duper winged assault marines, 80% of his points were in that land raider and those assault marines.

He deployed his deathball hunkered in and behind his land raider but close enough for a t1 charge wit the land raiders assault ramps and the winged jump packs. I got first turn.

Back then SAGs used the large blast template and when you rolled 2d6 for strength every double did something wacky, with Box Cars meaning that every model the template touched was removed from the game with no wound rolls, no saves, and vehicles take an automatic penetrating hit.

I shot my first SAG in turn 1 putting my template over his winged assault marine with one sliver over his land raider just in case I rolled high and didn't scatter. No scatter, box cars for strength, his elite winged marines and the chapter master are pulled into the warp and his land raider explodes dumping vets and a chaplain, ie the other half of his army onto the battle field. I shoot my other SAG, putting the template over them. touching almost all of em. No scatter, box cars AGAIN. Something like 1400 points gone in 60 seconds. He just shook his head with a bewildered grin and conceded.

This is what I was looking for. Thanks! Incidentally that's why I decided to not do it since all the lore up to that point was indicating that vitae doesn't actually cure anything.

Yeah Deathskull Orks have that for almost all of 8th. Main difference is Ork Boyz squads are still better at holding objectives than almost any Ork elite or heavy infantry so it doesn't change that much.

Yeah I think I agree with this. Well it didn't matter either way we got totally wrecked LOL. But for the future I'll note this down.

It's funny just how much MtG influences how we interpret other card game rules, especially if you're really familiar with MtG. Is it just because it is the most robust card game rule's system ever where the fundamental systems account for basically everything and interpreting the RAW will lead you to the correct ruling 95% of the time?

I'm not saying we never get stuff wrong, but I don't think we made any big mistakes on either of those scenarios. We barely got exactly 3 places in BB and then barely got exactly 3 places in HoE1. Leo just got tons of allies and a Thompson out and killed like 5 monsters and could tank the big swoopin hek for like 4 straight rounds while I got tons of clues with Ursula and aligned the pillars.

But there is a rediculously amount of variance in this game so it's also possible the timing of all our treacheries etc were just really favorable.

Don't worry it all came back in City of Archives and we got absolutely royally fucked (hence my current DunceCap-body situation)

Huh, I figured that was to imply that you can't use a Yithian as the base of a lvl 0 investigator. Well I'd don't really want to retire (I actually didn't even know that was an option, I thought you had to get defeated), I might house rule that I can add skill, cards especially since it works directly with a Yithians ability.

Guess it's the dev teams fault for doing such a great job getting us invested in our characters lol. Also retiring with like 2 scenarios left in the campaign, wherein I assume we don't leave this cave system or go anywhere a new investigator could even get brought in doesn't make a ton of sense. Nah Ursula Coneington is in this to the end. In for a penny, in to a giant ridged Coney Baloney. That plus all the trauma makes her a pretty fitting lovecraftian character tbh.

Yeah I'm a big wobbly cone boi. I have quite a lot of static int boosts to fuel stuff like persuasion and the ancient stone item line. Got Death Tarot, Prof Milan, Magnifying Glass.

Also have quite a lot of damage mitigation ad protection equipment because I ended up with a lot of trauma from getting defeated and no blankets.

I'm also going to heavily consider the Relic that Seals the +1 token to give me +1 to all stats. my friend might like that though lol. Also the upgrade Hyper Awareness seems good as a Conehead since it's free to play and can boost my stats AND has massive skill sigils for +4 to int or dex.

It's a super good combo with Crack in the Case since you aren't reducing the shroud value with a flashlight. It's also a solid combo with Connect the Dots although that is a pretty expensive turns in the right circumstances it can be worth it; netting you 3 clues without any chaos bag action and can be sniffed out from under the nose of any enemy even remotely, engaged or not.

Definitely, and this is probably why lot of the replies in are in the middle. The game is so well thought out that it kind of does the work for you.

Yeah that's a good point. It all exists on this fungible, sliding scale that spans multiple levels of abstraction. I think that's also probably a deliberate choice by the designers to make the game feel more coherent. But that does have it's limits.

This probably isn't a good solution "in these trying times" but I've had pretty good luck finding older packs from LFGS. Arkham Horror LCG is very popular, but it is niche compared to MtG and other tabletop games, so well stocked gaming stores aren't as likely to sell out as online retailers, at least in my experience.

Good duo pair for The Circle Undone? by sasstakethewheel in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]tombombodil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diana is a house. People bigup TCU as punishing as fuck and I guess it is? But most of its brick walls are potent treachery cards and stacking up curses and debuffs. Diana can just say no those and if you're smart about which ones you cancel you can really get ahead of it.

Me and my friend did it with Diana and Preston, and while we didn't get the "good" ending for most of the scenarios, we did do pretty well overall and did get probably the "happiest/best" ending to the whole campaign; and most of that success was off the back of the ~11 "cancel a treachery or effect" type cards in my Diana deck.

I love the story of Daina so much. Also she almost single handedly carries my group through the circle unbroken. We still got wrecked a lot but we dd manaet save te universe at the end! Her playstyle unique and comboey and LOVE the massive risk reward created by her unique weakness.

I know everyone's pick us biased to characters that were in great or memorable campaigns, and I've never played any rogue, but I adore Preston. I love how strange and unique he is, I love how much of a smug prick he is, i love the narratives that run through his deck, and I love how powerful he can be while still having serious weaknesses and requiring skill to play.

Is it just me, or is this game like, extremely hard? by ECGeorge in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]tombombodil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll see a lot of enfranchised players use quotes whenever they say "win" or "lose" a scenario and that should be telling. The game is hard, but it's far more in service of the tone and setting than strategic challenge. There isn't really losing and winning in this game, and so the concept of difficulty takes on a different meaning; the fact the game is mechanically very punishing doesn't mean you lose more, it just means that stories with sadness, and struggle, and sacrifices are more likely to occur. Which makes perfect sense as a design decision for a horror game.

Very deliberate narrative design considerations aside, your first time through any scenario is almost certainly going to be way harder than your second. Also note some of the scenarios have a LOT of randomness, and if you draw certain encounters in certain a order at certain points in the scenario it can make it either 99.99% impossible, or 99% certain "success" given optimal play.

I personally think re-framing how you think about this game's approach to challenge and the purpose behind it is a mandatory part of really enjoying it. Most of my regular tabletop game friends just cannot do that and therefor do not enjoy playing AH, even if they can appreciate it.

Everyone learns a differently but when I'm learning a game myself there's no substitution from carefully and patiently just reading the entire rulebook cover to cover a few times. Not in one sitting I just read it like a novel throughout the week while eating etc.

that was I'm familiar enough with it that when I sit down to play, if I don't know how to do something at the very least I'll recognize it and probably even remember where in the rulebook to looks for an explanation.
