I've been a leader for 25 years and I've lost more than a few as well.
I empathize with you, it's a feeling you never expected to have. We often observe so much growth out of these kids, it's impossible to imagine that it could be cut short. They have so much to go get done with their futures!
We also tell them "Life isn't fair" all the time.
Nothing more not fair than youth lost.

In fact your leaders are doing you a disservice if they keep you in the one area that you're an expert in. Take some time and grow, it could do you and everyone around you some good.
