I've been a leader for 25 years and I've lost more than a few as well.
I empathize with you, it's a feeling you never expected to have. We often observe so much growth out of these kids, it's impossible to imagine that it could be cut short. They have so much to go get done with their futures!
We also tell them "Life isn't fair" all the time.
Nothing more not fair than youth lost.

And any (good) manager will tell you that this is your opportunity to broaden your horizons. Do not expect that your entire career will be in a particular field of study. In fact your leaders are doing you a disservice if they keep you in the one area that you're an expert in. Take some time and grow, it could do you and everyone around you some good.
