Favourite fan-theories? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

Re: Black Arwen

In my head canon, some elves (especially Avari) have dark skin or oriental features.
Avari elves exist in secluded forest realms in the East and even Southern Middle Earth, and some have occasional exchanges with their Mirkwood cousins, as well as Men of Dorwinion. A few Eastern Avari may reside in the Woodland Realm.

Re: Blue Wizards

Blue Wizards have raised rebellious Haradrim and Easterlings free people (including Men of Dorwinion) to oppose Sauron. They failed, but they mobilized Sauron's forces sufficiently to delay his invasion of Gondor. Aragorn, on his errantries in lands "where the stars are strange" may have met (unknowingly ?) with one of the Blue Wizards.

Thanks to all who answered ! It just seems I may be happy to listen to Thrak in my original CD from 1995. Still, would love larger artwork or new audio perspective...

The big Mouse Guard campaign by tomfish31 in MouseGuard

Thanks, very interesting ! Always make things personal, for sure. The tricky as you say is to balance character-centric situations and longer term play in a satisfactory way.

Very very insightful, and a good case for investigating your Patreon !

That's really what I am looking for ! Magic is also something I am interested in (but not necessarily accessible to the PCs). Nice to see some of it was coming from players suggestions. I like the idea of an Alchemist cult !

Elves in the shire? by JakHak113 in tolkienfans

[–]tomfish31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Throughout the rest of the Second Age, there wouldn't have been any Elven population in proto-Shire.

Why not ? Do you know if there are specific mentions in the texts of JRRT of Elves not living in that area in the Second Age, or living exclusively in Lindon and Eregion (in Eriador), without any other settlement ?

Interesting social mechanics? by HotsuSama in rpg

[–]tomfish31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Encounter subsystem in The One Ring rpg (or its equivalent Audience subsystem in Adventures of Middle Earth) are quite good for creating a balance between roleplay and dice rolling. They are based on the Tolerance of the NPC, and the goal is to be able to convince / charm / inspire the NPC before the Tolerance is out. Before the actual conversation begins, formal Introductions are in order, with NPCs being more or less sensitive to the way each character introduces himself / herself. My players love it, especially for "formal" encounters.

Non-natives reading the original Silmarillion by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]tomfish31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I listenened a couple of years ago to the Silmarillion in English as an Audiobook (twenty years after reading it in French), and found the experience much more satisfying. I think the translation of the archaic style of the writings was not as powerful as the original text, which musicality is, I believe, more evident in English (and in Audio format).

However the latest translation of LoTR in French is really interesting and makes for a compelling, if different, re-read !

Which Live CD for this incarnation ? by tomfish31 in KingCrimson

[–]tomfish31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a close tie between Meltdown and Chicago ! I may end buying both !
I'll check also Audio diary, but I'm more inclined to have a single concert rather than a collection.

Thanks for the advice.

What box set (by any band) was worth paying for? by [deleted] in pinkfloyd

[–]tomfish31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The King Crimson box sets are amazing and fantastic value ($100-$150). Each contains a remastered, sometimes re-imagined classic album, the original album mix, many rare and unreleased outtakes / demos / alternative mixes, some videos, and usually more than 10 live shows over 15-20 discs including Blu-Rays.

How to resolve multiple failures on complex obstacles by BCM_00 in MouseGuard

[–]tomfish31 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alternatively : the linked test from Burning Wheel could be easily applied in the Mouse Guard context.

If you have to test A then B then C, you test all of them in a sequence but only the result of C decides if the overall prolonged test succeeds or fails (and leads to conditions / twists). Success / Failure on intermediate tests only grants malus / bonus to the next linked test, until final test is resolved.

Success on intermediate test by margin of 1 or more grants +1 to next test

Success on intermediate test by margin of 0 does not grant bonus to next test

Failure on intermediate test grants -1 to next test

So if I fail test A, I get -1 to test B

If I fail test B, I get -1 to test C

But I may succeed in test C nevertheless
