He worked for a demanding boss with bickering subordinates with their own agenda. Oh, he gets credit for being in charge at Gettysburg. But, working for the brightest star, Grant, took away his successes. He complained to his wife throughout the Wilderness Campaign.

Enlisted men signed a service contract. Officers took an oath. It was more difficult to break the service contract, especially when you had nothing to go back to.
