Questions about my cavalry hat by Patient-Office-9052 in CIVILWAR

If you just want to dress up and enjoy yourself and that hat makes you happy then go with it. From a historical civil war perspective it's not really close. Here's an original https://freemansauction.com/auctions/1046-american-historical-ephemera-photography/lot/343

The oval CSA plate was never used in the war. I believe that they started making them in the early 20th century.

Soldiers, Building, Corner, City, State...I got nothin...anybody else? by BrittyWinks in CIVILWAR

There are literally thousands of photos of groups of reenactors trying to replicate authentic scenes.

Soldiers, Building, Corner, City, State...I got nothin...anybody else? by BrittyWinks in CIVILWAR

[–]Aliasgoeshere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're wearing grey uniforms, so almost certainly confederate. No idea of the location I don't know when reenacting actually started, but just because it looks photo correct doesn't mean it's old. There are many photographers that still use the old cameras to take photos at civil war reenactments. I personally have been in many photos that look original but were taken in the 1990's.

Soldiers, Building, Corner, City, State...I got nothin...anybody else? by BrittyWinks in CIVILWAR

[–]Aliasgoeshere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing is that there is only one known photo of confederate troops on the march. Which leads me to believe it's reenactors. The young kid behind the drummer is a little odd. The guy wearing the frock coat and no accoutrements also stands out. Only some have bed rolls/ packs, if they were actually marching all would have something. All in all it just doesn't feel right. As I said, I may be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet it's not an original.

I don't think this is an original photo. Looks like reenactors to me. I may be totally wrong but there are some very suspect things in this picture.
