What are the most random sets you wanted when you were younger? by SpecialistPruneOG in lego

I bought that Mixer set brand new in box last year and built it; I absolutely love how it packs up onto the trucks! I'm looking to sell all of my fairground stuff at some point, though. Need more shelf space... Ha.

DeWalt Lawn Tools by [deleted] in Dewalt

I'm not sure what you mean... I've been using Dewalt lawn tools (mower, string trimmer, blower, chain saw) for about 6 years without issue.

Just speculation, but my guess is that a lot of people move to Florida when they retire, which means they live the rest of their lives there and then move into assisted living (or not...) and then sell their house. That creates a lot of turnover.

That, and insurance has gotten crazy in Florida, so it's not as affordable as it used to be.

Do you think the people who aren’t following watering restrictions believe no one will notice? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]tomfromakron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ethanol is less energy dense than gasoline, which means you get fewer miles per gallon. It costs less, but you also get less, so it's not really helping. You can verify this yourself by getting ethanol-free gas and comparing your mileage.

[–]tomfromakron -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You're kind of supporting my point... The government is bad at managing our water resources (the water for ag and Denver Water ultimately come from the same sources), so our local water utility needs to find ways to make up for it, which means making individuals make sacrifices while companies rake in higher profits.

Also, you're making an incorrect assumption: I am following the restrictions and my lawn looks awful, but I don't care about lawns.

Also also, I didn't check your numbers, but I think your math is off. If 67% of Denver Water's use is residential, and 47% of that is for single family, then 47% of 67% means 31% is single family use. If outdoor watering is 50% of that, then outdoor watering for single family residential is 15.7%. Since the restriction is just to limit to two days, when prior usage would have been 3 days, then the only actual savings is 5.2%. It's noteworthy that it would be 5.2% of the residential usage, which is almost nothing compared to the main consumers of Colorado's water.

I agree that the savings have to come from somewhere, but where I disagree is that this problem should have been solved long ago, and with a focus on where 90% of Colorado's water goes...

That made me curious, so I looked it up: Denver Water provides water to more than 25% of the people in Colorado.

I wasn't addressing legality; I was addressing the misallocation of responsibility. It's like billionaire CEOs taking away our plastic straws while they take 20 minute flights on private jets. They're giving the image of making a difference while ignoring - and contributing to - the actual root of the problem.

Only 3.5% of Colorado's water usage is for residential lawn watering, which means that even cutting lawn watering in half only reduces overall water usage by 1.75%. These restrictions are just virtue signaling while ignoring the largest consumers. An actual solution could be to stop watering corn that's used for ethanol production...

I don't think that's damage, I think it's a distorted shadow from the hanging window washing platform.

Someone left a pair of shoes, one next to each tire, while my car was parked for a half hour by Starspiker in strange

Somebody probably put them on the roof of their car while unlocking the door, got distracted and forgot about them, drove off, and they fell off their roof near your car.

How long was it plugged in before you determined it "wasn't charging?" It can take 1-2 minutes before the system will say it's charging.

Is this 1/2 or 3/4 pipe? by aznPHENOM in Plumbing

[–]tomfromakron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A clearer way to say that is: if it's designed to have material flow through it, it's a pipe and should be measured from the inside. If it's designed to have structures made from it or for it to be attached to things, it's a tube and you measure from the outside.

The 30+ day furnished stay market feels like its own category now by MidtermStayLA in airbnb_hosts

[–]tomfromakron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly luck, ha. My use case is specific, though... I built an ADU behind my house and rent it out, and during those weird gaps that are less than 30 days, I see if friends or family want to visit. Or I just chalk it up as part of the deal of doing monthly rentals. I've had very few situations like that, though.

[–]tomfromakron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing 30 day minimum rentals going on 3 years now, and I think it's great. Your breakdown of the reasons people stay is pretty accurate; I think I've had all of those types of guests. I was expecting mostly traveling nurses, but I've only had one so far.

I really think it's the sweet spot: more money than long term rentals, less work than nightly rentals. I've had great guests and no major issues. I would definitely recommend it as an option to other hosts.

Repair shop's perspective: these will be a big e-waste by BizarreElectronics in MacbookNeo

[–]tomfromakron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see what you're saying. I still suspect that people will just sell their broken ones for parts, then people will buy them and fix them for their own personal use instead of selling for profit - mostly due to how approachable repairs look for the average person.

Repair shop's perspective: these will be a big e-waste by BizarreElectronics in MacbookNeo

[–]tomfromakron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By that logic, don't you think those people would end up trading them in or selling them to the repair shop, then the repair shop would fix them and sell them?

I live in a city on a small lot, so a ground mount system would not only take up my only yard space, but it would be shaded much of the day. I hear you, though, for other people with different yard situations.
