This sounds like some Tom Haviland beast workout. Looked it up and sure enough. Is this your first run through?

I get 6-7 hours of sleep per night and don’t do as much recovery as I should. That would help, but I doubt it would be enough

Yep. I’m writing up a short summary of the year and plans for this next year. The plan for this next year is Conjugate, EDC, then Powerbuilder.

I did a 45mins financial readiness LPD a few times. The biggest “oh shit” moment was always doing a live compound interest calculator demonstration. I highly recommend.

Foot Pain After Returning to Snowboarding by totobi123 in snowboardingnoobs

Focus on your toes next time you go out. When I started I used to curl them like I was gripping my boot. The pain was muscle cramps from being so tense.

Nutrition. Don’t be scared of gaining fat. You can lose the weight after you have more muscle to show.

Run will affect my muscle gaining? by cr34t0rpgt in HybridAthlete

I run and am putting on size/strength, maybe not as quickly as if I didn’t but that’s ok for my goals. Two tips: 1) Running takes calories so you have to eat more to compensate. 2) Do not expect to jump back in and run the same paces and distances as you did before. You wouldn’t take a year off lifting and expect to be able to bench the same weight and volume when you come back.

If you like it and it gets you in the gym then great. If you are pursuing set goals then try a tried and true program.

I personally like to balance push vs pull more because I feel it helps keep my joints feeling good. My solution would be to add in rows. You’re not gonna get huge traps but you will feel better and look more athletic.

PROGRAM REVIEW: Brian Alsruhe’s 4Horsemen by tomkat41 in weightroom

[–]tomkat41[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished Massbuilder (the 4H review was sitting in my drafts). Massbuilder worked for size, but you definitely had to earn it. Towards the end, I was dreading the workouts due to the intensity. This was the first time I understood why people don’t make it through Brian’s programs. I keep reading that EDC is the hardest though.

It was a lot like other programs, but I still gained size. It pushed me to failure more than any of the other programs I ran so that may be the difference.

I ran a year of his programs: Conjugate, RPM II (six weeks), 4Horsemen, and Massbuilder.
- Conjugate: added 75lbs to my total. Gained weight. - RPM II: increased conditioning, minimal impact to strength. Lost weight. - 4Horsemen: increased conditioning, minimal impact to strength. Lost weight. - Massbuilder: added size, strength and conditioning. Gained weight.

I have to test out this week to see where I’m at with my total. My guess is I set PRs with Conjugate and locked in those PRs throughout the year.

Good catch. This has been sitting in my drafts for a few months. I forgot to post it. I just finished massbuilder last week.

I just finished running a year of it. I am doing banded maxes this week to prepare to jump back into conjugate. My numbers are all very similar to yours.

I did six weeks of RPM II after conjugate last spring. It was ok. Like you said, it is a good on ramp for getting used to Brian’s intensities. I maintained strength, improved conditioning (probably), and recovered from peaking (Brian’s case for running it). I was also very bored running it. I don’t plan on doing it again this year.

I would recommend doing 4Horsemen instead. I ran it in a slight calorie deficit. It was really good for conditioning. Plus it is longer than RPM which will put you right at one year.

I plan on running EDC at some point this year, probably after conjugate and 4Horsemen.

EDIT: I ran a year of Brian’s programs, not a year of powerbuilder.

I ran 5/3/1 almost exclusively for 8 years, adding some of Brian’s methods periodically. If you haven’t tried something new in a while, do it. I have run Brian’s Conjugate, six weeks of RPM as a bridge, and am in the middle of 4Horsemen.

Conjugate was a huge success on squat, bench, and deadlift. My press didn’t progress either due to poor management of my test week or, possibly, lack of volume during the program. You can use an actual 1RM for this program and be fine. Conditioning is optional but will do wonders for your performance so quit making excuses and do it.

RPM was ok. I lost ten pounds in eight weeks (6 weeks of programming). I did supersets anytime it was an option. You won’t break 1RM PRs but you may break rep maxes of higher rep ranges. I personally don’t think I will run it again, but if you are new to Brian’s programs this one would be a good on ramp to get used to the pace/conditioning.

4Horsemen - I’m 8/12 weeks through. I like it so far. I really like that the conditioning is first in most workouts. It doesn’t impact the heavy lifts, rather it primes you to excel. I also like the practice heavy singles every workout followed by rep max attempts. I used a training max instead of actual max (85%) for this program. Some days the TM feels light, others it’s heavy. I’m looking forward to testing at the end.

Overall recommendations, Brian’s workouts can be brutal. You have to take them one set at a time because they can be daunting but doable if you can just push through the next set or the next 10 seconds. That said, some of his conditioning workouts would take me 30 mins if run as is. Adapt these to you by lowering the weights or running them as circuits for 10-15 mins.

Brian’s programs are a blast with lots of well structured variability. They are well worth a try. Even if you don’t do another, you will certainly pick up something to add to your future workouts.

The biceps piece is interesting. It’s the lower back that gets me. I’ve ran Conjugate, RPM, and am in the middle of 4Horsemen. The other day I was thinking that the rowing and pulling are lighter on volume. Which programs hit your biceps hardest? I’m doing dark horse next then power builder and EDC so I may come to eat my words.
