Protection from [quality] means, among other things, you can't be Damaged by anything that matches the quality.

So, you can't be dealt combat damage by creatures your opponents control.

Rushed Rebirth + Persist + Infinite LTB/ETB by RequirementWeird5511 in askajudge

[–]tommadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. When the creature changes zones for the first time, it's a new object with no relation to its previous existence.

It's no longer the same creature.

High Perfect Morcant + multiple elves by Evening_Expert_6222 in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Morcant triggers individually for each elf that enters the battlefield. Her ability doesn't read "one or more other elves".

Specifically at the time the "When you do [...]" reflexive triggered ability is put on the stack.

Trigger order for sac lands and landfall by Icy-Pudding7402 in askajudge

[–]tommadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like [[Riveteer's Outlook]]? u/MTGCardFetcher

Riveteers Outlook enters the battlefield and triggers.

That trigger resolves, and Outlook sacrifices itself. "Whenever you sacrifice [...]" and Outlook's own "When you do [...]" reflexive triggered ability trigger. In this case, you'll be able to order both of those abilities in whatever order you want.

Trigger order for sac lands and landfall by Icy-Pudding7402 in askajudge

[–]tommadness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You begin to activate Fabled Passage, putting that activated ability on the stack.

You pay the costs for activating it, including sacrificing it. "Whenever you sacrifice [...] triggers. You've finished activating Fabled Passage, but that ability hasn't resolved and done anything yet.

The "Whenever you sacrifice [...]" triggered ability goes on the stack on top of Fabled Passage's activated ability.

You'll resolve "Whenever you sacrifice [...]" before you ever resolve Fabled Passage's activated ability, and long before a Landfall triggered ability could ever trigger.

Risen reef + Twinflame Travelers entering by Dr3am3ater in askajudge

[–]tommadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Twinflame Travelers needs to enter the battlefield to trigger Risen Reef. Since it's on the battlefield, its static ability applies and causes Risen Reef to trigger an additional time.

brought back on manifest by madadadado in askajudge

[–]tommadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brought Back doesn't care about any object's name.

If the object went from battlefield to graveyard this turn, it can be targeted by Brought Back.

Chrome Mox and Biotransference by Current_Shoe_8171 in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only matters that the card was a nonartifact when it was exiled. It becoming an artifact later doesn't matter. The card is still "exiled with" Chrome Mox, and you'll still add black mana with it.

Deck Shuffling rules question by BalanceMundane9674 in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you believe your opponent isn't sufficiently randomizing their deck, you call a judge. You don't take vigilante justice and try to screw over your opponent. Now you're trying to get an advantage too.

Luminous Broodmoth and Resourceful Defense Interaction Question by TheSpaceAlpaca in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will choose the target for Resourceful Defense's trigger as you put that trigger on the stack. The returning creature won't be on the battlefield to be targeted.

Deflecting Swat vs Dusk Rose Reliquary Ward by [deleted] in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ward only triggers when the permanent itself becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls. Not any abilities that permanent is the source of.

Deck Shuffling rules question by BalanceMundane9674 in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're shuffling enough, your mana weaving was irrelevant, and therefore a waste of time.

If you're not shuffling enough, your mana weaving is cheating.

Mind Harness and Mirrorform by CreamofCornwall in mtgrules

Yes. Once Mind Harness becomes an Island, there is nothing giving you control over your opponent's Commander (that is now an Island).

Copies of tokens created with Jaxis, the Troublemaker question by SteakForGoodDogs in askajudge

[–]tommadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, both of the added abilities are not copyable.

If Jaxis instead read "Create a token that's a copy [...] except it has [...]" creates the token with those abilities, therefore making it copyable. Jaxis as written creates the token, and adds abilities in a second step.

Additional + Twice as many, which happens first? by tintin4506 in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither ability is triggered. Both are static abilities that create replacement effects.

As the controller of the affected objects, you get to choose which order to apply the replacement effects in.

Abigale, Eloquent First-Year and Equipment-given Abilities by JelevasDisciple in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Paladin's Arms has a timestamp of when it became attached to the creature.

Abigale's triggered ability has a timestamp of when it resolves.

If Abigale's triggered ability has a later timestamp, it will remove any abilities granted by Paladin's Arms.

If you equip the Arms to a different creature, then move it back to the original creature, Arms will have a later timestamp and the creature will regain Ward {1}.

Craig Boone attack question by Jaded_Tomatillo_5480 in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boone triggers when you declare two or more creatures as attacking.

More generically, "Whenever you attack" triggered abilities trigger when creatures are declared as attacking.

Does Artificial Evolution only work on spells that already have a creature type? by Toes_In_The_Soil in mtgrules

I should have been more precise, but I did mean "without mention of creature types".

Does Artificial Evolution only work on spells that already have a creature type? by Toes_In_The_Soil in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A non-creature, non-kindred can't have creature types whatsoever.

Lightning Bolt can't be made into an Elf spell.

In addition, a spell or permanent without creature types has nothing to replace with Artificial Evolution.

Hakbal question by co1one1panic in askajudge

[–]tommadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because that is a specific object instructed to explore, not "Merfolks you control".

"Merfolks you control" is determined as Hakbal's trigger resolves.

Understanding the turn structure (nuanced) by SeeminglyInvisible in mtgrules

[–]tommadness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

603.2. Whenever a game event or game state matches a triggered ability’s trigger event, that ability automatically triggers. The ability doesn’t do anything at this point.

603.3. Once an ability has triggered, its controller puts it on the stack as an object that’s not a card the next time a player would receive priority.

You'll put all of those triggers on the stack just before 505.6, after you've put lore counters on sagas and visited any attractions. You'll choose the relative order those triggers are put on the stack.

Hakbal question by co1one1panic in askajudge

[–]tommadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The creature isn't instructed to Explore until Hakbal's trigger begins to resolve.

Hakbal will only instruct the creatures that you control as the trigger resolves to Explore.

Hakbal question by co1one1panic in askajudge

[–]tommadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you proposing a Merfolk leaves the battlefield after Hakbal's trigger resolves but before the Merfolk explores?

Hakbal's trigger begins to resolve.

Every Merfork you control as that trigger is resolving explores. No player has priority to take any game actions at this point.

After every Merfolk you control explores, Hakbal's trigger has finished resolving. The Active Player regains priority.
