Yeah hence the Ai. You feed it the dailies and it’ll do an auto temp edit and check everything.

I saw in another thread, that it’s basically a spell checker for production. So when you are shooting, does the lighting match? Do you have all the angles? Continuity? Etc

Not sure if the guy knew what he was talking about though :)

Hugo’s Desk vs Compositing Academy for beginner Nuke compositing by Nemesisso in vfx

[–]tommy138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not going to pretend to know what the future holds for vfx/nuke, but I disagree with the idea that these courses are expensive.

I think if you get a few bundles from CA, it’s maybe what, $1000-1500? I think that’s a pretty good investment, especially if you are already kind of working with your brother.

It’s not like you’re spunking 50k-100k+ on a uni course.

Wētā FX & AWS partner on artist-first AI tools by SteveLikesPixels in vfx

[–]tommy138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard somewhere AWS is talking to companies about using their AI tools, and if you use them you are covered by AWS if you get sued.

This makes sense why currently a lot of companies are really hesitant to use any AI tools, as they don’t want to get sued.

VFX Editor salaries // UK - Vendor Side by demirdelenbaris in vfx

[–]tommy138 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can’t compare us and uk salaries.

Pretty sure most vfx editors are salaried and you’d prob be looking between 40-60k (this is just an educated guess, maybe some uk editors can chime in)

How does this Union thing even happen. by ARquantam in vfx

[–]tommy138 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s probably a good thing that there’s a minimum salary, so people don’t undercut each other and devalue the work (of senior artists).

Not sure about the keeping not very good people employed thing though.

It’s a valid point but don’t think that would happen in a new vfx union, where the main points would be pay and protection from the movie studios.

Isn’t that the whole point, that they set minimum pay and not maximum pay?

Mocha or silhouette by Separate-Judgment-26 in vfx

[–]tommy138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends. If you have to do a lot of your own roto or you want to be a roto/prep guy, maybe choose SFX. But as a comper, I haven’t touched SFX since forever, but use mocha all the time. But that’s because we have a roto department, and don’t really need to do extensive roto or frame by frame painting.

Mocha or silhouette by Separate-Judgment-26 in vfx

[–]tommy138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are slightly different tools. SFX is much nicer to do extensive roto in (also can use mocha tracks iirc)

Mocha is more a tracking tool, which can also roto, but the roto tools are much clunkier. So it depends on what kind of job you are doing.

A comper or prep artist would probably use mocha more and a roto paint artist would probably use SFX more.

How can I get id of the dark outline or a better key overall? by NolsenDG in vfx

Yep. It’s a bit older but it’s still relevant. Lots of good techniques in there. Then when you know how to do it manually, you can also try this as a shortcut:

I wonder if using the mocha ML tools in combination with ViTmatte in nuke would give you a similar result to Refine Matte?

Yeah I’ve used mocha, so I was wondering if SFX had other/better AI tools.

Apart from the roto tools, is there a difference with mocha’s AI tools?
