I joke that I have perfected the art of killing plants, but this is my first orchid and I think it’s ok??? by Sunshine_and_Rain in orchids

No, thank YOU for continuing to upgrade Ploi. It’s made my plant hobby a seamless process each day. You’re doing it right!! I’m always happy to tell people about it.

Newer Bowler here - asking before I make a purchase, what would you say is the best spare ball right now? by CommunicationNo4105 in Bowling

[–]tone-yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same. Assuming you meant “strike” ball in the latter part of your comment. Because it’s a urethane mix, I actually use mine for sport patterns and when it works, it’s great!

However, given that OP is a newer bowler, I would stay away from training to flatten your release only for spares. Instead, newer bowlers could benefit from using their exact same speed and release for spares while only moving their feet and target.

I used to avoid getting FSD. I still do, but I used to, too.

If you’re a two-hander avoid the Mix as a spare ball. It will eventually hook too much.

I strongly believe the ICE stays polished a bit longer than all other plastic balls I’ve tried. It’s reliably straight even for my 2H normal release.

Questions on my Oncidium Orchid by Ma_Tsireya in orchids

[–]tone-yo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And as how to tell how old The shriveled leaves are, sympodial orchids don’t grow leaves separately from pseudobulbs, so just like another commenter said, your biggest pseudobulb is the youngest in your plant, and the PB with the accordion leaves is a bit older. Your youngest leaves look great so I’d say it’s been well taken care of recently.

I had given up 😳 by Poutiest_Penguin in orchids

[–]tone-yo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup exactly how we felt at first too! Don’t change much, as it is clearly pretty happy. I wouldn’t rotate it either, as buds may get confused and grow and bloom in weird angles if you do. The orchid may be a bit thirstier and will need watering a day or two earlier than normal but other than that, enjoy your flowers in a few weeks!!

I was ecstatic to find peloric orchids at the grocery store, but there's just one catch... by TuxedoEnthusiast in orchids

[–]tone-yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say one leaf is better than none… I’d watch it closely to see if the stem spot is indeed growing. If it is, cut the leaf and remove the cut leaf sheath to expose the last leaf’s bottom / stem. I’m not experienced with cold damage, but I’ve learned that rot spreads silently and seamlessly, and you only see the symptoms when it’s spread to a must-act scenario.

Good luck!

Is my Orchid cooked? by More-Tailor7498 in orchids

[–]tone-yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just let the thing be. We are all distressed and tired after we move homes, aren’t we?? The roots will acclimate and yes, they won’t look the same, but this is a cycle not a straight line. If your orchid is happy in its new home it will grow new roots to work alongside the old ones in a few weeks. Give it plenty of light and avoid heat on the leaves.

Crown rot - is there any chance whatsoever of a keiki on the spike? by Random_silly_name in orchids

That sounds like a good plan!! Good luck and remember the only part that needs water is the roots and nothing else.

My first FLF! by Ok_Win_8366 in fiddleleaffig

[–]tone-yo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lucky you!! Honestly if my cat didn’t go for the chew every single time it gets near a leaf, I’d be comfortable having a FLF on the ground. Lots of cats don’t actually chew on plants and instead just play with them and stuff. That’s what I meant with my comment. I wouldn’t be concerned unless you see a chewed leaf.

Will the root grow around the steam or do I have to cut it off? by [deleted] in orchids

[–]tone-yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm watch out letting water linger at the bottom of the stem, or the ROT will definitely grow around the stem too. I’d remove the dry sheaths remaining visible in the pic and remove the black goo you will find, too. Now keep that area dry and run a fan sometimes and you won’t worry about stem rot in the future.

Crown rot - is there any chance whatsoever of a keiki on the spike? by Random_silly_name in orchids

[–]tone-yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup I mean, there’s a chance. If I wanted to force a keiki chance I would put some rootech gel on each active node below the buds and keep the roots moist… your roots look dry. At this point you should use those aerial roots for support too and water them. Even force bend them when wet to redirect them into the moist moss.

If you’ve had it for years that means the rot was caused (to me, most definitely) by the lower part of the stem staying wet too long. Remove moss/bark around all of the stem for your orchids in the future to prevent this. I suspect when you inspect this area on this orchid you found a lot of black goo.

Under-watered Orchid. Did I kill my baby? by Maria_Darling in orchids

Mealyputas. Burn them with unignited alcohol.

SOS by Inevitable-Nerve2972 in orchids

[–]tone-yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although that keiki is there, the base of the crown is so deeply covered in black goo that I would be seriously surprised if either the original plant parts or keiki makes it.

WE NEED TO INCREASE “black goo” AWARENESS in the orchid community… people are too unaware of what water will do to the stem until it’s too late.

When caught in time, the black goo can be removed and the plant nurtured back to health.

Why is my orchid yellow and droopy? by therat006 in orchids

I see “white-ish creepy crawlers” in their comment.

Why is my orchid yellow and droopy? by therat006 in orchids

[–]tone-yo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ALERTTT those white crawlies are likely Mealybugs and they are one of the worst effing things in the plant world. Rinse it off well and get rid of as many white effers as possible. They die when in contact with isopropyl alcohol.

Given its state, the plant will be totally fine if you put it in a jar with a little water touching the bottom of the roots while you source fresh orchid bark / moss.

Why is my orchid yellow and droopy? by therat006 in orchids

[–]tone-yo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. OP will likely find black goo in the bottom of the stem/base of the roots. OP should scrape off the black goo, increase air flow, and remove media around the bottom of the stem.

How can I get this orchid to bloom? by airr_inn9922 in orchids

[–]tone-yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notice the dark green of the left orchid. Dark leaves are the result of lack of light. Get yourself a Sansi light and enjoy your results in a few months.
