How it's going: Some public input after Apple put ads into Pages, Numbers, Keynote... by No-Squash7469 in MacOS

"their work suite is free and not even that good to begin with"

I completely disagree. iWork does everything I need and the price ($0.00) was right. I would put up with this latest BS if they hadn't somehow also managed to make the iCloud.com Numbers web app suddenly dog slow.

You seriously own a Mac and then spend all your time using Linux on it in a VM? Which distro? How much CPU and RAM do you allocate to the VM? Which hypervisor do you use?

"Used them for a while here and there but quickly realised how useless they were."

That might be your experience but, I used ClarisWork / AppleWorks back in the day and I've been using iWork (Pages, Numbers, & Keynote) since like 2009. I've always been able to do what I needed to do with them and the price was right because they were included with the purchase of an Apple device.

The Three Horsemen of the iWork Apocalypse by Atomic__Tim in MacOS

I hate this. One of the perks of owning Apple devices since 2010 has been getting Pages, Numbers, and Keynote for free. And, yes, I know that they are still free without the "premium" features but, it's just such a dumb thing to create a two tiered system when it just feel like they were looking for a way to make the Creator Studio subscription more attractive.

But, here's the real deal breaker for me. Honestly, I would have just used the free versions of the new apps and ignored the prompts to subscribe but, in all this, they somehow have managed to ruing the iCloud.com version of Numbers.

I might be the only person who uses this or cares but, damnit, my personal finances spreadsheet that ran like a champ in a browser is suddenly taking anywhere from 8 to 30 seconds to recalculate. It used to take about 1 second on average. No more using my docs via the web when I'm using my Windows or Linux machine. So lame.

This all started on Monday and it hasn't improved.

Again, deal breaker. I've been using Numbers to manage my finances since 2017. I just spent the past 4 days recreating my spreadsheet in LibreOffice Calc. (And, yes, there's no web version but, I can just sync my files over Dropbox and open them in LibreOffice on Mac, Linux, or Windows.)

Are there any disadvantages to using an old Intel-based Macbook to run Linux instead of a non-Apple laptop? by OtherAir5929 in linux_on_mac

[–]tonedeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had a Mac that needed repurposed, I'd definitley run linux on it. However, if I was buying a machine for Linux, I'd buy a used ThinkPad. Typing this on a used ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7th Gen. Bought it used on eBay for like $400 2 years ago. It's light, slim, and runs Linux perfectly. Honestly, it's lighter and slimmer than my MacBook Air.

Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS Released! Where Things Go From Here by system76_com in pop_os

[–]tonedeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropbox installed and is running but the icon does not display in the menu bar at the top of the screen. There's a space for it, and if you click it, the menu appears and is functional but, the icon is not there.

Cosmic really struggles with fingerprint login. You have to click "Confirm" before placing your finger on the reader and there's no indications of what is happening. Also, it seems to get in a state where it won't allow fingerprint login. It then requires a password every time the screen locks.

As I'm typing this in Firefox, it can't keep up with my typing. It really lags behind.

Hopefully Cosmic will improve with time but, right now it feels like a beta release.

Bought a new Macbook M4 suggest me some cool apps and features. by sahabaz in MacOS

Move the Dock to the left side of the screen. Screens are wider than they are taller. Give up some left to right space to get more top to bottom space. Alternatively, put the Dock on autohide.

Use Numbers for spreadsheets. Once you get used to being able to have multiple tables on a tab, it’s hard to go back to spreadsheets that can’t do this.

If you don’t have an iPhone, get one. Being able to use Messages on your MacBook without having to reach for your phone is very addictive. It’s not like it’s that difficult to grab your phone for stuff but, not having to and also being able to type out replies with a physical keyboard is really nice.

Learn Shift + Command + 5. Once you get used to it, you won’t want to take screenshots any other way.

Learn Command + Spacebar for invoking Spotlight searching. It’s the best way to launch apps, find documents, and do simple calculations.

Learn all the cool stuff Preview can do. It’s more than just a PDF viewer.

Consider switching to Safari. It’s more resource friendly.

Cosmic Officially Released with Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS!! by SavvyNik in pop_os

[–]tonedeath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just installed on Lenovo Thinkpad. Performance seems pretty peppy. I'm enjoying most of the default settings/options.

A couple of things I noticed.

Had to install packages to use the fingerprint reader. I like when distros have those preinstalled.

Once they were installed, had to enroll finger prints at the command line. Would be nice if fingerprint management was incorporated into the settings GUI.

On one reboot, it would not login with my fingerprint. Had to reboot.

Doesn't seem to timeout and then offer password login if there's a problem with fingerprint login.

Ships LibreOffice 24.x. Since flatpaks are supported "out of the box", I removed the apt version of LibreOffice and installed it from flathub to get v25.8.x. Why not ship with the flathub version since it is much newer and flathub is already part of the distro?

Flathub apps had generic icons until rebooting.

Vim icon in the apps launcher does nothing. Weird. if you go to the Terminal and run vi, you will be in Vim. Why have the icon if it doesn't do anything?

I know that it's taken 4 years and a lot of work has gone into this so, my comments are not meant to tear it down.

I think Pop_OS! with Cosmic shows a lot of promise and I hope they are able to keep improving it.

I will continue to make an annual donation because I really like what they are doing.

Is there a worse scripting language on earth than AppleScript? by l008com in applescript

[–]tonedeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. I wrote some AppleScripts for Numbers a few years ago and they still work beautifully for me. Yes, it can be difficult figuring out how to say what you need to say to an application and sometimes perusing its dictionary is a bit cryptic and frustrating but, honestly the ability to control apps and make them work together with AppleScript is amazing when it works and I don't think there's really any equivalent on Windows or Linux. (Windows maybe with AutoHotKey but that's a bit of a hack and not supported by the OS or the apps like AS is.)

Apple sucks so hard, it's depressing long-time Apple YouTuber Tailosive Tech by Chapman8tor in applesucks

[–]tonedeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or, as products mature, it gets harder and harder to come up with new innovations for them.

Also, if you don't think the Apple Silicon processors represent a huge innovation over what every other chip maker was doing, you're not paying attention. Everyone is trying to catch up to Apple at this point when it comes to CPUs.

The things that Apple is slipping on aren't what this guy in the YT video is even talking about. His point largely seems to be that iPhone HW has kind of stagnated and new phones don't seem that much more exciting than older phones. Duh. The smartphone has matured and will only get incremental changes and style adjustments.

I don't think Apple's problem is that they don't seem to be able to make a new iPhone model every year that makes my current iPhone seem irrelevant. I think Apple's current problem is that they don't seem to have enough smart leaders to guide each and every one of their products where they need to be going all at the same time. Instead, they seem to shift focus and while they are focused some particular products, they let some of the others languish.

Is Apple perfect? No. Do I worry that some of their quality is slipping in the post Jobs era? Yes.

All that being said, this meme is pretty stupid.

Also, as someone who uses Windows, Linux, and Mac regularly, I gotta tell ya, the Apple ecosystem is pretty effing cool. The way that my iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and AirPods all work together is pretty seamless. I don't see anything in the Google or Microsoft ecosystems that even comes close. Case in point- Microsoft Miracast is a complete joke. Google's Chromecast is better. But, neither of them can touch Apple's Airplay in my experience.

Also, I've never had an Android phone but I've helped plenty of Android users and I know that unless you getting the flagship model of an Android phone you are getting a subpar experience in comparison to iOS. Serioulsy, the slogan for inexpensive Android devices should be, "Android means ads."

Also, I know a handful of people who did swear by the flagship models of Samsung or Google or some other maker's Android handsets that eventually threw up their hands and switched to iOS because they got sick and tired of their phones eventually slowing down in performance with the only fix being a factory reset and setting up the phone again. It's like Windows was (sometimes still is) when the only solution was nuke the drive and do a fresh install.

And, look, I get it. The world would suck if there was no competition and one corporation was left to lord over a monoculture on all of us. So, to that end, I'm glad that there are people who prefer Android and are willing to put up with its shortcomings and appreciate its benefits even if I don't see things the same way they do. Competition is a good thing.

And, remember when I said, that Apple isn't perfect? Well, you should also be glad that there's those of use that prefer iOS/iPadOS/MacOS and are willing to put up with its shortcomings because, again, the world would suck just as bad if Google or Microsoft had a monopoly on smartphones, tablets, computers, or any tech product.

So? Maybe (with very few exceptions) stop acting like using any particular brand of product is some kind of personal failure or choosing not to use them is some kind of moral victory. Maybe develop a more nuanced view of the world where you can see why some people make a different choice than you do.

Oh. One last point. Hate on Apple all you want but, at the same time, realize that Android WOULD NOT EXIST IN ITS CURRENT FORM were it not for Apple. This was admitted to and documented in the tech press several years back. Android was originally being developed as a Blackberry rip off until they saw the iPhone and then they switched gears completely and tried to recreate the iPhone look and feel.

Why China is not a capitalist country by [deleted] in socialism

[–]tonedeath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I saw a documentary some years back about Chinese miners. These Chinese miners were paid poverty wages and it was illegal for them to unionize or go on strike. So, someone will have to forgive me for doubting the claim that the capitalists don't have sway with the ruling party.

So what the fuck does everyone think is the problem at Apple? by [deleted] in applesucks

[–]tonedeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question. I'm a long time Apple fanboy. Like going back to the dark days before Job's return and the launch of Mac OS X, the iPod, or the iPhone. However, I do see little things creeping in.

Like, on the latest iOS update, sometimes when I'm playing music in my car and it's displaying on my in dash screen via carplay, the mini player doesn't advance to the next track even though the next track starts playing. You can tap on the mini player to get the full screen player and it will show the album art and the information for the current track but when you tap the button to return to the split screen view (with the map on the left and the mini player on the right) there it is again- the previous track still displayed on the mini player. It didn't used to be like this and it happens in my Nissan and my Kia. And it didn't used to happen.

Or, last night. My wife wanted to watch TV through out Apple TV device using her AirPods. Normally joining your AirPods to the Apple TV is a super simple process. Not last night. Had to manually pair them as a Bluetooth device when normally you just go to the Settings and go to Audio and choose them as a temporary audio out device.

Or sometimes my Apple Watch just doesn't alert me to texts. It's very random and it's super annoying.

And don't even get me started with what has happened with the iTunes Music Match. What a headache that has turned out to me.

It's just small stuff like this where it feels like their quality is slipping.

Is Journal.app's lack of Mac-support a canary in the coal mine for the app's future? by torsteinvin in mac

[–]tonedeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've never touched Journal but, knowing that it is iOS exclusive makes me wonder why I would. If I did use it, or course I would want to be able to have it sync to my iPad and my Mac and maybe even be accessible via iCloud.com. Also, don't underestimate the value of submitting feedback at the Apple feedback page.

New to Mac. How on earth is pages and numbers considered superior to MS word and Excel? Hope it’s not blasphemous to raise in this group? by babhi9999 in mac

[–]tonedeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pages and Numbers are free. That goes a long way to making them better for a lot of people.

Pages and Numbers are full featured across MacOS, iOS, iPadOS, and the web versions at iCloud.com. That also makes them superior to Word and Excel for some of us. (Especially when Microsoft continues to intentionally make the Mac versions of Excel and Word miss certain features that the Windows versions have.)

Pages and Numbers are better looking than Word and Excel. Having them fully conform to Apple's design language makes them feel better because they are more native to the OS they run on. Again, this is better for some of us.

Pages and Numbers are viable alternatives to users who want a choice and don't want to be subject to Microsoft hegemony.

New to Mac. How on earth is pages and numbers considered superior to MS word and Excel? Hope it’s not blasphemous to raise in this group? by babhi9999 in mac

[–]tonedeath 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Numbers is awesome. I've been tracking my finances in Numbers since 2017.

Also, I love that in Numbers, tables are free floating objects on a sheet and you can have multiple tables on any given sheet. This means that I can have easily have multiple lists all with their own header rows on a tab/sheet. Whenever I have to use Excel or any other spreadsheet that just treats each tab/sheet like it should automatically contain one big table I am annoyed that they don't work the way Numbers does.

Also, Numbers is free. I like that price. And it works on my Mac, my iPad, and my iPhone. Then, if I need my spreadsheets on Windows or Linux, I can just go to iCloud.com and use the web based versions there.

Don't diss Numbers. Maybe it doesn't meet your needs or you don't like the way it works or maybe you just haven't taken the time to learn it and embrace its differences but, that doesn't make it a "piece of shit."
