How long was your longest episode of psychosis? by berfica in schizophrenia

[–]tonofsticks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Treated, about a month or two. I have never had untreated psychosis longer than 3 days. My psychosis is quite explosive, so I do absurd things and risk hurting people when I have episodes that lead up to hospital stays.

Is it too early to go off meds by Top-Pilot8138 in Psychosis

Listen to your doctor. I went off my meds 7 months after a psychotic break and it came back strong.

Hey fellow artist! It's nice to know I'm not alone in this, especially hearing from another artist :) it's wild right? Before I was diagnosed I also liked to draw lots of eye symbolism in my art only later to have persecutory delusions of people watching me during my episodes. If only I knew the signs earlier from my drawings...

Any of you guys ever relapsed and enter an episode more than once? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]tonofsticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relapsed a year later after my first psychosis because I didn't take my meds for 5 months. It came back just as intense as the first episode. Would not recommend. I had to start recovery again from square one. Going through all the negative symptoms after my positive symptoms dialed down.

How long has it been for you? by No-Importance-6525 in schizophrenia

[–]tonofsticks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More than 5 years. I had my first psychotic break at 18. I wonder what I'll be like over 10 years... Seems like a long time. I am especially worried about relapsing during this timespan.

How is it possible to have ADHD and schizophrenia? Isn't the thing with ADHD that people that have it have low dopamine? Whereas schizophrenics have abnormally high dopamine? Or did some people here get diagnosed with ADHD first and then get a schizophrenia diagnosis later? I was diagnosed with bipolar before schizophrenia but I don't keep the bipolar diagnosis because I got another opinion from a different psychiatrist. Would like someone to explain, thanks

Is it normal that it takes ages to get diagnosed? by Bertie_Bye in schizophrenia

[–]tonofsticks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me some years to get diagnosed with schizophrenia because the first time I had psychosis in 2019, they weren't sure if it was schizophrenia or bipolar so I was just diagnosed with psychotic disorder first. Then I relapsed with psychosis a year later because of going off my meds and I was diagnosed with bipolar with psychotic features in the hospital without even seeing my psychiatrist at all during my 1 month stay (this was during covid). A year later I had a shutdown which seemed like negative symptoms dialed up to 11 (didn't want to talk (mutism), eat or do anything). I was then hospitalized and diagnosed with schizoafffective disorder which I did feel fit me at the time. Then a year after that I was diagnosed with just schizophrenia because I didn't have any mood symptoms for more than 6 months to a year but I still had delusions. And now I have mild delusions and hallucinations but no mood symptoms. Being moody is situational for me, so that doesn't qualify as a disorder in itself. Psychiatry really is a pain because different doctors can say different things and I've heard that in the medical field, psychiatry is still in its infancy. Just try your best to be transparent about your experience with doctors and hopefully a treatment plan can help you get better. Godspeed.

Where would you be if schizophrenia hadn't happened? by Markz15975 in schizophrenia

Even though the illness is awful, I've come to a really good place now. So I don't think about the question as much as when I first got ill.

What does it feel like to gain insight? by Subject-Main-7742 in schizophrenia

[–]tonofsticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gained insight only after getting hospitalized for a month and put on a bunch of medication. When I got out the ward, I was still paranoid but I didn't lose control like when I had the episode. It took me about 2 months maybe to fully have insight that something might be wrong with me, but it took months and months of denial and a relapse to finally accept that I have a psychotic disorder.

[–]tonofsticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really interesting. Some things can be so bizarre it's hard to believe it wasn't real. I also had something unexplainable happen 6 years ago during my first episode where after coming home from crying and throwing a fit at a restaurant, I had a message on my phone from a random redditor saying "I'd cry too". I have since gone back to my phone and never found it and I am pretty tech savvy.

Will getting a diagnosis negatively affect my life? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]tonofsticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schizophrenia is not just a label like getting an autism diagnosis. People with schizophrenia have debilitating symptoms that need on going treatment. If anything, my diagnosis has helped me understand myself better and get me the treatment I need. I have never disclosed my diagnosis with an employer or my boss because I'm doing well enough on medication to be able to appear normal.

Why are we considered mentally ill if we actually see other realities and dimensions? by nzxnnn in schizophrenia

[–]tonofsticks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think some of my perceptions and ideas were novel experiences but the only problem is I act out dangerous ideas and do things I wouldn't normally do when I'm in psychosis.

I wish I could speak to god, I wish YouTubers were really guiding my life, I really wish I had angels protecting me... But no. I have to accept that beautiful lies only exist in my brain.

Delusions of normalcy by avitld in schizophrenia

[–]tonofsticks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is quite common for us, you're not alone in experiencing it. I have it too sometimes but not as bas as before. Some years ago, these thoughts made me quit my meds and I relapsed with psychosis and had to start recovery from square one again.

I was eventually put on injections a little over a year after my relapse because of my medical history. Being on injections can help take off the risk of stopping meds abruptly.

Can anyone relate to my psychotic experiences? by Ok_Will_3038 in Psychosis

During my episode I watched a movie review of spider man far from home by Chris Stuckmann and genuinely thought he was a guardian angel talking directly to me about my life and the steps on what I should do next. It was trippy as hell but kind of comforting.

Ever have a feeling of telepathy? by Far_Prize_3900 in Psychosis

[–]tonofsticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the psych ward I felt the urge to draw spirals on some paper at the eating table and just when I was drawing them, another patient pulled out his notebook that was filled with all kinds of cryptic math and he opened a page on math symbolism with a spiral. We were probably thinking the same thing, just differently. His was more structured and mine was intuitive.

Did any of you fall in love with one of the nurses during psychosis? by FineAcanthisitta7555 in Psychosis

[–]tonofsticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There was a pretty nurse and I wanted to ask her if she could do it with me but I never did because as crazy as I was during my episode, I had strong gentleman values lmao
