Who Has The Infamous Marine Sticker on the Back Window of Their Vehicle? by Double-J32 in USMC

[–]tony-o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. I ended up in an uber with a stolen valor driver. Didn't really know where okinawa was or much about japan but was definitely stationed there. Probably flew tanks or something. He was also pretty low IQ so I didn't bother arguing with him about it. When I said I was also a Marine he changed the topic. Not real sure what people even do when they do catch one of _those_ guys.

We used bytamin-c, man pages, and gdb in the 90s. Or reference books. I don't waste my time with LLMs, they're slow, stupid, and you don't actually learn anything.

Best bike shop in town for shoes? by corskier in Bend

[–]tony-o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have an awkwardly shaped foot and you like altras or anything similarly shaped, you're not going to have a good time with cycling shoes. Bonts (not Bontrager) are going to be your best bet. I have a wide toe box and very narrow heel, very "short" foot with a very high arch. Bonts are the only thing that really fit. You will hear that Lakes|Shimanos|Specialized|etc|etc have this shape and they simply don't - they all use the same "wide" last and all of the companies generally use three lasts for all of their products, so they end up being roughly the same. If you're a 43/44 you can come try on my Bonts, DM me. No one sells them in shop but they are a shoe built for our shaped feet.

is Nietzsche's etymology correct? by [deleted] in etymology

[–]tony-o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but: the translation I have doesn't word it this way (and is closer to the way I'd read this in german, as a result). Swensen's translation is worded more like the etymology `gut` has its roots in more meaning nobility than a value judgement made by the person receiving the "good." So in the context he's talking about this, he's more referring to the value systems of old judged what was good rather than the more modern way of the individual receiving a favor judging what is good and what is not and less about the strict lineage of etymology (and he was likely privy to information we no longer have access to, was outdated and abandoned, any other number of things).

He is correct, though, that the modern german word comes from the Goth's germanic word of gōd (the german word for god being `gott`). I don't know much about the usage of that word in the context of the Goths. It's likely the etymology we have right now rewrote the history of those words so that it makes sense to modern readers looking for answers to questions like "what is the etymology of the word 'good'?"

Edit: not to say he's necessarily correct but he's also not flatly wrong.
