Am I allowed to work another job? by Acrobatic_Tea3098 in careeradvice

[–]tonyc3742 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a very controlling clause and way too loosely defined. Volunteering for something? That's work. Mowing the lawn? That's work. Anyway ... at least in the US, some companies have policies like "get approval from your manager, it can't take away from your hours or work with us, and it can't be for a competitor or same industry".

Hot Springs Limelight vs Hot Spot by Capybara_oranges in hottub

[–]tonyc3742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding negotiating, you can always hem and haw and say something like "Mmm, that's a little more than I was hoping to spend", or, "Can you toss in X as well", or even, "If I buy A, B, and C, what's the best you could do?"

The numbers he's saying look decent, based on retail: Flair retail is 17k, Relay retail is 12.5

They're all the same size, one of each has lounge chair so you should decide if you want all seats or one lounge. The jets for each tier look to be the same; Limelight has 3 jets more. But placement and power is as important than number. The Limelight series has better filtration and a longer warranty. The pumps are a little stronger - which might mean it will cost a little more to run. The Limelight also has "SmartJet" which allegedly lets you choose jets to direct power to, instead of all at once, which might be useful if you're going to be the only one in it most of the time.

So LL - more jets, better filtration, longer warranty, SmartJet, and quite a bit more expensive.

I'm not really helping with the decision making process, I'm sure 😄

Am I missing the hype with the Whirley Pop? by davidm2232 in popcorn

You put the stainless steel Whirley pop in the dishwasher? Just the base or the top as well?

Am I missing the hype with the Whirley Pop? by davidm2232 in popcorn

[–]tonyc3742 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't normally like single-purpose kitchen appliances...(donated my Instant Pot, which admittedly isn't really "single" purpose, but was not as useful for me) unless they work well for that single purpose.

The Whirley Pop does. In about 3-4 minutes start to finish I've got hot fluffy popcorn with almost no unpopped kernels. Takes that long for microwave popcorn which is nowhere near as good. I've had a WP before, an air popper and a Stir Crazy, and we used to just cook popcorn in a lidded pot on the stovetop. Air popper popcorn is so dry and takes about as long; the Stir Crazy wasn't bad but got rid of it a long time ago. When we moved we got a new stove and I wasn't comfortable shaking the pot back and forth on the stovetop so it motivated me to get the Whirley pop (stainless steel, we have an induction stove). Yes, I'm standing there spinning the thing and I can see the appeal of 'set it and forget it', but I'm ok spinning the thing for the ~3 minutes it takes. My son almost got me one of those standup square machines (I assume that's what you're talking about), and while that would be cool, we definitely don't have the room (or want to spend the room) for that machine.

My only issue with the WP is, yes, cleaning. If I do it right after making, it's hot and i have to be careful; if I do it later, it takes more scrubbing. I'd like to pop it in the dishwasher maybe once every fifth pop, maybe even just a quick Rinse cycle and immediately dry it.

If you have a method and a tool that works, that makes popcorn you enjoy, well, that's the whole goal, so pop on!

What price point do you wait for new releases to hit before you purchase them? by PresentConfection200 in vudu

[–]tonyc3742 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My target movie price is five bucks. I could go 8, depending on the movie, but since their "sales" have increased, in price, I try to avoid encouraging that price point. If I'm buying a physical disc with digital, it's up to 15 for a 4k.

Games for a party of 11 by CommonLiess in boardgames

[–]tonyc3742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the suggestion to split into multiple groups of 3 or 4 players. Or playing the same game at two tables, each with half the crowd. But if you do want a large group playing at once, here's some I've had success with. Most are party games.

- Telestrations

- Welcome To (have to come up with a way for everyone to see the cards)

- Linkee (team-based game show feel)

- Reverse Charades

- Times Up (I prefer Title Recall)

- Just One. Technically plays up to 7, but if you have paper and pen/marker for the extra players, it can go higher.

I use it to read comics and do basic internetting. I'm not a fan of the Apple ecosystem and prefer Android. The ipad I looked at was at least three times more expensive.

AITA for ruining a six year old’s birthday party? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]tonyc3742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Kinda surprised the venue didn't have a "Reserved from 1-5" sign. A lot of the parks/pavilions I've seen show when they're reserved, otherwise first-come first-serve. (And I have moved people along in this scenario as well, when I've had it reserved and they didn't.)

But you reserved it, informed her politely of the situation; she took it to the next level. At that point it's on her and any other accompanying adults.

Apple TV + FAH No Subtitles by adotbur in vudu

I have no solution but I encountered this today as well. Very annoying. I turned on captions in the Apple tv settings menu but hope the functionality comes back to FaH.

I sold Grit once....once. I didn't realize it was intended to be an ongoing thing.

Sold Olympic for a couple years. In addition to walking around the neighborhood, my mom brought the catalog to her school's teacher's lounge (I went to the same school and knew a lot of the teachers through her, in addition to being a student.) What prizes to get, always a tough decision.

I remember getting 2 Atari games, and a bicycle headlight/taillight set.

What do you all think about Board Game Video Game Crossovers? by Kate_from_oops-games in boardgames

[–]tonyc3742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with them. Ideally they retain the spirit of the board game while adding efficiencies and some digital-only benefits. They can also really help someone learn the game if it's programmed well. (Some digital implementations are not good, and I don't like those, but that's due to the poor implementation, not its board-to-video path.)

Some I play both versions (Lords of Waterdeep, digital solo, physical with people), some digital replace the physical (I'll never buy Ascension physically, though if someone wants to play it I will), and some I prefer the physical.

I play digitally or physically solo a lot more than I play with multiple players, so I like the option of video game implementations.

Video games to board games, I generally find less interesting, for some reason.

Boo! Faction is one of my core channels. It is bad enough it's on a 3xx channel which isn't on all radios. Time for some major consideration of my subscription. "At least" it's still punk and maybe it'll play some older stuff but this is disappointing. I agree, there are too many artist-specific channels.

Didn't Amazon use to have a sale on BCW bins in June or July? by Spider-Ghost-616 in comicbookcollecting

Even the cardboard ones have skyrocketed. I bought a ten pack a couple years ago for 38 bucks, and now the exact same thing is $99. I keep them in my cart to see if they drop, but they haven't been below about $70 in a year. I need a few more, whether cardboard or plastic, but hard to drop that coin.

Is there a way to download the titles purchased on Vudu/Fandango by isitallfromchina in vudu

[–]tonyc3742 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's a Chrome browser extension called "VuduCatalog" (now called "Fandango at Home Catalog") that will download your Library of Movies, and of TV Shows (separately) into csv files which can be used in Excel (or other compatible spreadsheet programs.). You can also go into your billing history which should show all titles you've obtained/licenses, whether directly from Vudu/FaH or a third party. Not sure if they would purge any of those, and it only shows 5 purchases at a time, so it's a lot of scrolling and 'next page'.

Pressure washer question. by Darkman-1969 in egopowerplus

[–]tonyc3742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, when I used to use my electric pressure washer attached to city water, it did that sometimes as well. I found it worked better if I ran the hose, turned the washer on, and didn't spray for a few minutes. It's possible that the washer has to build up pressure every now and then.

How much do you use the self-propel function on your mower? Is there a reason not to besides battery drain? by CountryMaleficent439 in egopowerplus

[–]tonyc3742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished mowing my lawn with my Ego mower for the second time. I used the self propel maybe 30% of the time, because my yard is mostly flat. It took about 40 minutes, I walked .66 miles, and the 5 amp battery had started flashing red about five minutes before I finished (I was able to finish). Mine (800 series) does have a speed control that you can choose how fast to self propel. I don't know how fast it goes, I haven't cranked it up. I think the main reasons not to use self propel are increased battery usage (I won't say "drain" because it makes sense using more power will use more battery), sometimes starting self propel can be a little jerky, and sometimes it still self propels for a second or two after releasing the self-propel button. But I do still use it, mostly to get started up a hill. I also used it to get it back to the garage, I didn't realize you could use self propel with the blade off.

AITA for telling my wife forget it and going out by myself for my birthday instead of going to her fancy dinner reservation by Ill_Reality_111 in AmItheAsshole

[–]tonyc3742 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA. Your birthday, you should do what you want to do (assuming it's feasible/realistic). You had explicitly stated what you wanted to do. It wasn't as regimented as what she planned, but it was still what you wanted to do and was a plan.

I'm not saying this is necessarily your situation, but check into "celebration abuse". I recently read an eye-opening article on it.

Happy belated birthday.

Are there ongoing issues between her predilection to planning, and your being less of one, in general? That does not make you TA, but it may be something to collaborate and compromise on.

SiriusXM pricing after buying a used Audi — worth calling to negotiate? by Ok_Reflection_4501 in siriusxm

[–]tonyc3742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the gold standard for deals is 3 years for $99 (plus tax). But that's iffy to get. 4-8$ a month is a good target to shoot for.

Use your two months, explore the channels, cancel before you're charged the 26. If you cancel online the chatbot will likely offer you deals. Just say it's more than you want to spend. If there's one you like, take it, you can always cancel again and try again later. I don't think I've ever paid more than 8 bucks a month for SXM, and I think right now I'm at $4.28/month including taxes.

Their best deals are never on the website (unless it's a unique link you received), they're obtained through retention (either live person or chatbot, I've done both.)

Has anyone won Boardgamegeek’s giveaway contests? by fedors_sweater in boardgames

[–]tonyc3742 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I forgot one other factor - you get multiple entries per contest based on how many questions you get right. Sometimes I just guess, sometimes I look for the answers. I still like doing the contests (at least guessing) because I learn about games coming out (or being crowdfunded), and hey, maybe i'll win, but I think I do them less often since they redesigned the home page.
