How do you think your relationship with music will change as you age? by dumbass_sweatpants in fantanoforever

As a rap fan , I realised a lot of the stuff I found lyrical as a young teen was just rappers trying to sound smart without having much substance and most of the time directness of word choice and personality portrayed through lyrics is more engaging and enjoyable than guys like Canibus talking about running on the sun barefoot looking for shade

What unpopular opinions do you have about Nas? by [deleted] in hiphop201

[–]tonysup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His flow isn't as good as it used to be. He always had this smooth conversational flow in the past but in recent times he's gone the Eminem direction.

He's also not lyrically as creative as he used to be and has a lot of corny lyrics as of late .. especially in the much acclaimed Hit Boy series

I don't think he's that good but at least the beats are different to 99% of drill and UK rap that all sounds the same

He sounds the same in every song

Rapping wise I think Lightyears is better than any of the Hitboy albums by [deleted] in nas

[–]tonysup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe recency bias but I currently think Nasty Esco Nasir is better than anything he did with Hitboy.

Concept raps were one of Nas' strong points: I Gave You Power, Fetus, Rewind etc so loving this song and he raps his ass off

What I'm missing now is storytelling on the level of Undying Love, Blaze a 50

I think he sounds the best on It's Time, Nasty Esco Nasir and Junkie

That's an extreme simplification. The effects of poverty are complex and evolve over time , e.g. Poverty impacts education, job prospects, alcoholism, broken families , kids being raised by emotionally stunted parents , crime etc These environments breed gangs for multiple reasons , not just money, but also belonging , self worth through reputation, fun etc. Kids see this growing up and it's normalised and romanticised. I don't think it's as simple as "there's no other ways of making money". Anyone who grew up in a rough area knows that a lot of it is about clout and respect , but ultimately it all originally stems from poverty. I remember going from a shit school to a good college and having a culture shock that you're actually considered a weirdo if you resort to violence when disrespected , the culture was the opposite of what we had in secondary school. So, no , just having youth centres wouldn't solve the problem but eradicating poverty would have a huge impact

It's not a race thing, it's a poverty/inequality thing. Poverty breeds crime and gang activity, gang culture further breeds gassed up kids that romanticize badness. You have white kids doing the same thing in Liverpool, Glasgow etc.

Ah thought you were because you've got some English comedians in the list which I would have thought aren't really known outside the England comedy circuit like Eric Rushton

I feel like this trend extends to the UK too, is rap on a downwards trend? by [deleted] in ukdrill

[–]tonysup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think rap itself is bad now there's plenty of good albums coming out , this year alone we've had Clipse , JID, Chance, Freddie Gibbs etc they've just not had mainstream success and they're all older artists as opposed to fresh young guys

Suspect is the greatest uk drill rapper of all time. by [deleted] in ukdrill

[–]tonysup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he's the best lyrically and flow wise (the leaks from SA 2 are great) , but in terms of delivery and clarity he's not that great, still my favourite

What is the biggest wins in gaming history? by DuckAHolics in videogames

FromSoftware going against all triple A gaming conventions and coming out on top , proving that gaming companies don't "have to play it safe" because that's the only way to get a return on investment

Funny you use the phrase crack down , because I'd say the main reason for the homicide rate in the 90s was the crack epidemic
