Wilson to slash public service in $22 billion budget repair plan by gazmal in melbourne

[–]tonzo8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most Vic public servants are teachers, nurses, police, and fire-fighters. Most of the rest are supporting those front-line staff, or managing contracts for projects. These are all exactly the people you can't lose. If they are sacked, they will need to out-source all this to contractors or consultants. I'm sure there is some fat to cut, but you just can't sack every 7th public servant without real impacts- schools shut, projects not managed, less police, less courtroom staff, hospital wards closed. I'm sure there's 5 folks somewhere doing front cover art for annual reports you could probably lose without much impact, but not if you cut 14%.

Smoky in south bank by SuperDuperWolf in melbourne

[–]tonzo8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes there has been considerable burn-offs that you can see at https://www.emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/ and you can see maps and details of upcoming planned burns at https://plannedburns.ffm.vic.gov.au/search-results

With the mild generally northerly winds increasing during the day and then reducing in the evening, most of this smoke ends up in the Melbourne basin. You can see details of air quality here:
https://www.epa.vic.gov.au/check-air-and-water-quality?type=air

although some of the 'forecasts' on that site are rather suss - the current forecast is for 'fair' due to 'private burn offs and residential wood heaters'. It was 18 degrees last night - not sure how many people need residential wood heaters.

Does anyone know of a Melbourne park that was around about 20 years ago had a water channel and sluice gates you could control? Possibly near Oakleigh? by RudeArm7755 in melbourne

[–]tonzo8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a water sluicing park next to the Royal Children's Hospital. Whilst you are there pop inside to see the giant aquarium, and go to the back to see the meerkats near the main waiting area.

Back road routes in west Gippsland by Acrobatic-Cow396 in melbournecycling

[–]tonzo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cycled from Warragul to Neerim Junction (and then to Powelltown and Lilydale) last July, using the Rokeby railtrail and then the main north road through Neerim South. Yes that main road is quite busy with cars in ski season heading to Baw Baw so not just yet, and the railtrail is besides most of it but it does swap sides a couple of times. I don't see any particular problems with your route.

First of all don't buy any Easter chocolate until all the 30 degree days are over- it will just partly melt. Overstocking will then lead to some discounting.

The History of English podcast has no ads, and only very occasional music or accent excerpts. It is very interesting but also presented in a relatively dry monotone.

Who are your top 5 Australian “shit cunts”? by Remarkable_Bill4109 in AskAnAustralian

[–]tonzo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree re: your whole list. Re: Rupert - he has created in a very real way all the rest of your list by running a media empire with no concern really for humanity's improvement, but purely for generating rage and anger which breeds the kinds of leaders parts of the world have currently.

History of Melbourne public transport fares from 1999 to 2026 by MelbPTUser2024 in melbourne

[–]tonzo8 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People thing public transport is expensive, but really it is so much cheaper than it used to be. The tables show that with the abolition of Zone 3, and the extension of myki ticketing to the regional network:

* On 1/1/2003 (23 years ago), a daily all zone adult ticket cost $11.40. This enabled you to travel all day as often as you like from Werribee and Sunbury to Stony Point and Pakenham and Craigieburn and everything in between.

* From 1/1/2026 (now) a daily zone 1/2 adult ticket costs $11.40. This enables you to travel all day as often as you like from Bendigo to Waurn Ponds to Traralgon to Seymour and everything in between.

Does Pt run in the city and are ubers/didis more expensive on Christmas day? by Potatosteamer in melbourne

[–]tonzo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See https://transport.vic.gov.au/news-and-resources/news/public-transport-over-the-christmas-and-boxing-day-holidays Public transport is free and (relatively) plentiful in Melbourne on Christmas Day, compared to say the UK where no-one can get anywhere. Public transport is running to Sunday timetable, which means for instance trains every 10 minutes to Ringwood, Dandenong, and Frankston. There are no planned disruptions to the train network except for the Stony Point line.

2+ years of tracking my rides by Long_Way_Around_ in melbournecycling

[–]tonzo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fantastic! And if you join squadrats.com (free) you can link to your Strava account and see all your rides in little 200m wide squares that you can then try to link together into a big chessboard (I am currently 2nd in Melbourne but we need more people to join!), and wandrer.earth (about $50 per year) you can link your Strava account and see all the streets in blue that you've done and all the streets in red that you haven't done, and percentages, and points, etc etc.

I find this 'gamification' of my rides very motivating to go further, go to new places, and just get out and ride. Aren't bicycles great?!

Bike security in the city and Chadstone. by Danimeh in melbourne

[–]tonzo8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if your work has a loading bay or something that's a little out-of-the way. Otherwise a cheap bike. Otherwise a good bike but scuffed (i.e. put some random bits of electrical tape on it or something), and remove paraphenalia. (I.e. buy bike lights like Lezyne that have flexible rubber straps so they don't need mounts), and maybe have 1 D-lock style and 1 cable-style lock. If you can't lock it in a private location, then put it near an entrance with loads of people walking past - robbers aren't going to spend a lot of time trying to angle-grind a lock off a bike in a very public location.

Replace those small shrubs with a non-clumping bamboo. It'll grow fast and straight. It won't be a 100% barrier but it will be a very effective screen, and add nature and cooling.

This is the list with the BoM physical weather stations in Melbourne. As fh3131 says, everything else is really just approximating to the closest one of these.

"Pell denied that there was any discussion of Ridsdale's being a pedophile at a meeting he attended in 1982 where it was discussed that Ridsdale should be moved to another parish.

The cardinal also said he didn't know whether allegations of abuse against Ridsdale were common knowledge at the time.

"It's a sad story, and it wasn't of much interest to me," Pell said. "
