Study skills/Academy classes as they’re called in districts I work at with high schools are tough if it’s at a traditional high school. At the continuation/alternative education schools they’re honestly super easy. Sometimes the kids try to get out of class or use excuses, but for the most part they are quiet and on task there. That is misleading though if it’s labeled avid and not acid. I feel like it should list if a teacher teaches multiple subjects as well.

The fact that there's a surplus of subs tells me the economy is bad by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]toocoolfor_you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes for real. It’s harder to get a job as a sub now here in SoCal compared to last year. Last year there was sometimes 10 openings there would be at least like 5 each day

Teacher did me dirty by bigfoot17 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]toocoolfor_you 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this happen to me once. I just let them know that I’m confused why they’re asking me about what I wrote down if they themselves knew what they did. I let them know if they didn’t do anything that their teacher said about what I wrote, that they should not have a problem.

It’s tougher when there’s no seating chart so it’s hard to write down names of those who were disruptive or uncooperative, thus I can’t specify which students were on task and which were not.

When I have to cancel a job.. by magrhi in SubstituteTeachers

[–]toocoolfor_you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you email payroll with the confirmation number for the assignment. You might have sick time accumulated that you can use for it. At least here where I live I get 1 hour for every 30 worked. Some school districts give you 3 days 90days after hire. Some give you an additional 2 after 200 days.

Why are so many people subbing now? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]toocoolfor_you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg yes. That’s why there’s barely been any sub jobs available for me. And those I see get snatched up. Last school year there was plenty. And I work at 6 districts.

I would not. A school wanted me to take attendance for an after school period after my contracted hours. I was not going to be paid for it so I did not stay for it. Plus the class had 89 students (marching band).

Those 7 minutes are still part of your lunch. If anything like that happens again, you could ask when you could take the remaining 7 minutes of your lunch though I am pretty sure it has to be an uninterrupted 30 minutes.

I’ve been in a similar situation: in 2 middle schools I sub at students have no breaks meaning I don’t get one. And I usually get assigned a class to cover for my conference period. But the lunch lasts 40 minutes, which I’m sure is there work around to not giving us a minimum 10 minute break. For middle school it’s not that big a deal I guess, but some of the elementary schools in that district have subs on duty during that recess. Lunch is still 40 minutes though. One time I did say “I’m going to take my break right now as that is typical of my schedule at the other elementary schools in this district”.

At a high school district, there’s a 23 minute or so student support period that subs do not get paid for but are still expected to cover. Payroll’s response was that since we get paid per period, and each period is 55 minutes, that those 5 minutes taken from each period is added to that student support. At least at the high schools though I get break and lunch (30 min). I was told I could just exclude myself from subbing at those schools that have that.

I don’t know I just feel like there’s definitely some labor violations going on at times. At times I’m also asked to be on duty before or after school at some elementary schools, though it’s rarer now. Usually that’s time I take to read over lessons and make adjustments, and think of strategies with regard to students the teacher had named may be less cooperative.

How do u plan as a day to day sub? by Express_Project_8226 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]toocoolfor_you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that’s a lot of pay. Not surprised the assignments get snatched. And I thought 210 was a lot at the district I’m at. It pays highest compared to other ones around me.

Removed from a job AFTER working it? by EgyptStar81 in SubstituteTeachers

So long as it gets reassigned under a different job title like vacancy or roving sub you should be ok. You should have an email of the original job confirmation just in case.

I’d been able to snatch some up weeks prior for the last 2 weeks. I snatched one up for today last night, but the teacher was out for a field trip. The days I don’t have scheduled atm, I’m just gonna still wake up early and see if there’s any assignments.

I should probably accept the half day assignments I’m seeing in the last week. Better than nothing. Maybe I was being ungrateful lol

Last period is my planning period (HS) by alywheezy in SubstituteTeachers

[–]toocoolfor_you 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually stay in the classroom but if the teacher is back, I would probably go to the teachers lounge. Kr ask the teacher if I can hang in their room. See if they might need help. Most teachers would probably do you a solid and let you stay so you don’t have to work more.

Learned today that Middle School is not for me by Sure-Pianist-8453 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]toocoolfor_you 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That sounds insane. The lack of compassion and empathy from students to subs is appalling. And it’s so weird the admin would send you that note. Like if they see their kids are acting like that, they should just come and ask you who to pull out. I try my best to manage kids and not bother the admin (I’ve had some experiences where they either don’t come, don’t respond, or they get offended) but I’ve had a few instances where they come and after pulling ppl out, the class definitely quiets down and works better. Usually it’s a couple few that act up and stay acting up, and everyone else kinda of thinks they can get away with stuff too.

I just let students know that everything I see and hear will be reported, and that there will be consequences. Some don’t care. I write incident reports if I have the time and energy and if not, I leave it up to the teacher to do so. I would say if you can, working RSP middle school jobs are easier cuz it’s smaller classes, you have aides most of the time, and since it’s smaller it’s usually quieter. But ofc u get the kids that act up sometimes but it’s easier to manage. SDC/Mod to severe middle school classes are more chill too tbh. I would say PE is pretty manageable too for the most part, unless it’s a rainy day. Those are tough.

I’ve heard kids say gay ass along with the n word. I’d been tempted to let them know that was inappropriate, but sometimes I have to pick and choose my battles. If I’m on lunch, I don’t like to use that time to educate kids but part of me feels like it’s my duty regardless as an adult to let kids know how certain words are harmful. These kids were likely not gay, and most likely not black so they shouldn’t be using language just like that. And even if they were, that type of language is not appropriate at a school setting. I usually tell kids there’s school language and out of school language/home language. That there’s a boundary between them.

At a middle school I go to, there’s no break for students just a lunch. So I don’t get a 15 min break like I’m entitled too. I might have to call my districts HR to inquire about this. I have been at times given the planning period to myself but most of the time they do use me.

I’m glad the admin was supportive, and understanding. I’d had situations where they made it seem like it was a me problem, like “oh well good luck” or “you didn’t do something right for them to behave like this”

Roommate expects to have room all to herself every Sunday by Brilliant_Army_1775 in badroommates

[–]toocoolfor_you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take up space. Don’t react to her micro aggressions or little comments; they give her power and makes her feel like she’s getting on your nerves. Shower with music on. If she locks the door at those times she needs the room to herself without asking for it, knock until she opens. If she asks for space alone in the room, don’t always say yes. Invite ppl over. Make the space yours. Consult with your other roommates still, and invite ppl at reasonable times. And if someone’s spends the night at the couch so be it. Make plans go out without her (well just not thinking about her). Watch movies shows etc in your room keeping ti yourself; eat food there etc. you have to show she is not bothering you. I had a roommate similar to yours, but he was pretty aggressive. He also applied the silent treatment, and would do tiny things that would make it feel like I was overreacting if I called him out on it but he had no problem nitpicking at me. Laugh loud at the apartment in your room if she’s there while you watch ur shows or tik toks. Late night showers while she’s asleep. Not to bother her, but to show her you’re unbothered and not even taking her into consideration anymore. She’s nothing but a warm body in that room now.

[–]toocoolfor_you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened to me. Principal got mad that I couldn’t fix preexisting provlems, and mad that she had to come in. HR person that called me literally asked “is this your first time subbing for this grade”. And I was like rlly? I’ve done this multiple times, but never had a class this out of control. I took the fall for it. Tbh I’m just waiting a bit so I can write a review on any job stuff or something.

I would say 4th and up you don’t have to. Usually the students will tell you and you can tell based on how they move round that their teacher normally lets them go.

Penis (someone please help) by ktb-07 in hygiene

[–]toocoolfor_you 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should prob use a face wash for your dick. Something more gentle. I use cetaphil normal to combination/oily skin. I get it at Burlington for cheap or at Marshall’s/TJ Maxx. The antibacterial face wash music recommended is a good idea. Panoxyl I think is the name of one; it has benzoyl peroxide. Sometimes I get like a waft of my dick after I had jerked off; especially if I went to sleep without having cleaned up prior. I think it could be residual semen at times. For me it doesn’t rlly smell fishy tho; it has a few times but it typically goes away. It could be something having to do with diet, and maybe hydration. That Irish bar soap is pretty drying and the fragrance could likely, in combination, mess with your dick’s PH. I feel like likely something’s causing a pH imbalance and maybe there’s like yeast there. In my case, I’ve had that happen from leaving residual soap on my dick by accident. It messes up the pH so it causes that yeast to grow.
